She Picked the Ugliest Rock… Then This Happened

We’re back digging through the 2-ton pile of rough rocks once again — and this time we make it interesting. To keep things fun, we blindfold Grace and let her pick one rock completely at random from the basket. Unsurprisingly, she chooses what looks like the ugliest rock of the lot. After washing the stone and taking a closer look, we start analysing what we actually have. At first glance it doesn’t look like much, but we break it down step by step and try to identify it properly. To help us out, we ask ChatGPT to identify the rock, and it does a surprisingly good job with a clear and accurate explanation. The verdict? A common but interesting combination — quartz and amphibole, with minor pyrite and mica imprint. No rare treasure this time, but still a great learning moment. That makes it ChatGPT 1 – Rockshop 1 for this series. With another two tons of rough still to go, this is just the beginning — and it’s going to be a lot of fun.

From Burning Hot to Cool in Minutes

Summer in Hartbeespoort can be brutal, and anyone who’s been to The Rockshop knows how hot the outside rock displays can get. The rocks soak up the sun all day, and by midday they’re almost impossible to handle comfortably. This has been a real challenge for us, especially when moving or sorting large stones.

Halfway through installing a solution, I decided to grab my camera and share the process with you. In this video, you’ll see us putting together a DIY misting system to cool the rocks and make the space more workable. We install the sprayers, connect the lines, and then test the system to see if we have enough pressure to run everything properly.

What really surprised us was how good it looks once it’s running. The fine mist cools everything down almost instantly and brings out the natural colours and textures of the rocks in a beautiful way. Stones that normally look dull in the heat suddenly come alive, and the whole outside area feels fresh and inviting.

We load the last 2 tons of massive Butter Jade boulders in Pretoria using a block and tackle, because the stones are far too heavy to lift by hand. With a Hilux and a long chain, we drag the huge jade boulders into position and after two hours of hard work, everything is finally loaded. We take the long road back to the Rockshop in Hartbeespoort, transporting rare, heavy natural jade. At the Rockshop, the large Butter Jade pieces are offloaded by hand, and where they land is where they will be sold and dispatched. The video ends with a visit to Chameleon Market, showing how raw Butter Jade boulders are transformed into world-class stone sculptures.

Invited Into a Humble Chinese Home-What I Saw Truly Surprised Me…

Today I’m in Ketang, China, visiting my friend Yulon at his home. His house is humble, and I feel honoured that he invited me inside. When we arrive, he shows me his name painted on the wall — written by himself with a large calligraphy brush. He even painted the names on his neighbours’ houses. His brush skills are incredible.

This is what real rural China looks like.

Inside his home, he serves me traditional tea with parched rice and peanuts. A simple but beautiful gesture of hospitality.

His wife shows me how she strings beads to earn extra money. Beads are placed on two rolling bars, and she slides a needle through them. The beads almost “jump” onto the string. She earns only 10–15 USD per day (about R250) and receives just 0.20 RMB per string. For higher-quality beads she earns 0.50 RMB per bracelet, but selecting the best stones takes much longer.

Then we visit the local gem mall, where I buy some inexpensive jewellery and get a real feel for the markets in rural China.

Up one flight of stairs we enter a world of noise and activity. The factory is buzzing with workers. Two beads are drilled at the same time. A vibrating shaft with metal rods creates friction. A mix of abrasive powder and water cuts straight through the stone. The hole is drilled from one side and finished on the other. It is surprisingly fast. But the work is repetitive and exhausting. A Wild Ride Through Ketang to Discover How Beads Are Made!

Today we take you inside a world few people ever get to see—the heart of a small bead-making workshop in Ketang, China. I ride through the busy streets with Yulon, who worked at this factory just a week ago. His motorbike is more than 20 years old, and let me tell you… riding through Ketang traffic on that thing is a CRAZY experience all on its own!

Our first stop was a factory that turned out to be closed, but we didn’t give up. We set off again and eventually arrived at a small working bead shop—when I say “factory,” it’s really just two hard-working men shaping gemstones by hand.

They were cutting Brazilian quartz crystals into perfect little cubes using a thin 1 mm diamond saw. Each crystal is inspected, chosen for its clear areas, and sliced down by hand. Some cubes come out large, others small, depending on the stone. From there, the beads normally go into the next stage where they are rounded—but that machine wasn’t running today. After rounding, the beads are polished until they shine and finally drilled into the beautiful gemstone beads we all know.

It's incredible to see how much time, skill, and precision goes into something as simple as a bead.

Just three shops away from the hotel entrance, we step into a large bead-drilling workshop. Last time, artisans worked manually. Now, everything is mechanized. Watching thousands of beads being drilled with perfect precision—by machine, at lightning speed—is a rare behind-the-scenes look at where global jewellery production actually begins.

The hotel is filled with buyers and traders from every corner of the world. It’s incredible to meet people from so many countries, all here for the same reason: to buy and trade gemstones, beads, and jewelry at one of China’s biggest markets. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to explore places like this and bring you along on the adventure.

So, I headed to the scrapyard to source some steel and came back with a pile of curved pipes. After plenty of cutting, welding, and fitting, we finally created a unique stand that perfectly supports the crystal.

But we didn’t stop there—holes were drilled into the pipes, and we wired up a 20-watt LED spotlight at the back. The result? Absolutely electrifying! This once raw crystal is now a high-end interior décor piece, complete with a convenient push switch on the floor.
