Allie and Marshall go to a video game museum on vacation, surprising no one. If you’re in Berlin (specifically around Karl-Marx Allee) and ever been into video games, I highly recommend a little stop to the Computerspielemuseum. This place surpassed my expectations. Too many cool things to put into one comic! My other consideration for that third panel was the “PainStation”, a literal torture device that hurts your left hand if you screw up while playing Pong. And yes, it was playable. Note the four warning signs. Germany, yo.

Here’s the photographic proof of the last panel (more or less). I can assure you my reaction was accurate.

Hold on to your lederhosen and dirndl, because the Germany! travelogue comic is back! Predictably, it was hard to get back into the swing of this comic right after our Scotland trip. It’s fun to come back to these stories. There’s still so many to share - we haven’t even left Berlin! That first park beer was pretty amazing, and as a North American who hasn’t traveled internationally much, very very weird.

NOTE: The dialogue in the first panel translates to “do you have all your cups in the cabinet?” which is a slang term akin to “are you nuts?”. I can’t entirely confirm that it’s grammatically correct. I do my best.

We forgave Jon.

I absolutely did not do Jon justice in cartoon form. Sorry, Jon. Here’s Marshall & Jon at the little pub we settled at in the deserted party neighbourhood.

It was great hanging out with a local pal in another country - it’s always a bit of a novelty!

Prost! The first of many. If you’re ever around Alexanderplatz in Berlin, I highly recommend the short walk to Lemke Brewery. They produce tasty craft beers, some deriving from traditional German styles and some in a more North American style. Check them out!

In which Allie goes a little bonkers.

All of the panels here were referenced from photos I took of areas at and surrounding the East Side gallery, a remaining section of the Berlin Wall that is preserved for graffiti artists. If you’re in Berlin I highly recommend walking along the west side for spectacular lettering and the east side for mindblowing murals. In general, Berlin had the coolest street art of the entire trip. It will feature again in the comic before we’re done here! You can see some of my inspiration below:

Really, it was a great time. Even the shared bathroom aspect. A+, would hostel in Germany again. Here’s the real-life photo I took of the exterior of our hostel in Berlin. I used it as reference for the first panel!

Hey look, we’re in Germany! Even though most of the Berlin U-Bahn is underground, sometimes it pops above ground and over bridges like this fairytale masterpiece, Oberbaumbrücke:

Bonus comic! On July 12th, I had the pleasure of being invited by the German Embassy’s Culture/Communications team to do a live sketching stint at their “Germany In Canada” exhibit at the International Pavilion in downtown Ottawa! Pretty cool. While there, I got to meet HitchBOT 3.0, the infamous hitchhiking robot who made its way across Canada, part of the US, the Netherlands and... yes, Germany! While the real HitchBOT can’t talk, I would have loved to share some of our travelling experiences with the little bot. :) I sketched this comic at the exhibit, and cleaned it up digitally when I came back home.
