I'm back!

Hello all!

Sorry for the long absence. I was dealing with a lot of mental health issues. But I'm back and better. I want to get back documenting my productivity journey. I am no longer in school so I need something to keep my mind active. I am taking back up language learning. I fell off it for a while but it's such a fun hobby, its hard to give up. My mom has been studying french for a while, she takes night classes and in August she is going to do a 6 week intensive french course in Paris. I want to devote some time to studying French. But I also still love German and need to pick that back up.

I haven't fully worked out my learning schedule yet, but I am still off work for a little bit and I want to use that time effectively. So I will be devoting a lot of my time to German, as well as some time to French.

My current German study plan looks like this:

Daily

5 lessons of Nico's Weg

5 Lessons of Harry gefengen in der zeit (both of these are free on Deutche Welle)

Watch a few videos of Easy German

Seedlang German: 2 stories plus 50 or so review cards.

I'm thinking this will be about 2 ish hours of study daily. Obviously I'll tweak it depending, but I think it'll be a good little intensive.

I also have a few books, like a practice grammar work book as well as a short stories in German book I want to use.

My goals are to be able to read through the short stories books with minimal stopping to look things up. And I also want to resume my German only days, where my entire day is in German, no English.

French on the other hand I have not figured out such an organized system. I have access to the pimsleur lessons. I think I will do one of those in the mornings. I like to do them while I play video games. I also have 2 practice makes perfect grammar books for French I want to start working through, plus a 501 French Verbs book. I will use some youtube videos as well to help supplement. My goals for french are to be able to communicate with my mom in only french so that we can talk when we go to Paris.

I don't think I will work on Chinese right now. 3 languages is a bit much. I am still debating between continuing Chinese or doing Spanish. but for now I think I will only stick to the french and German.

Other productive things I have taken up, despite graduating college, I still love history and want to continue that passion. I am working my way through the Maria Theresa biography by Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger. Absolutely amazing! I've been taking notes on it, it is a phenomenal work. I used to love reading, but because of some mental health issues in the past, it's been hard for me to keep focused. But its a muscle and I just need to exercise that muscle. Just like anything intellectual. I am working on building myself a little curriculum for the time I am off work. Languages, history, and probably philosophy will be my main topics of study. I want to study music and drawing but my violin needs to be re stringed. Drawing I can do, but I have to go through all my art supplies. We shall see. I may be getting over ambitious, but I think that's my nature. I'm not sure. But I will come back on and update you with all the things I've done today. I've started working through my German. Not yet on my french...

this blog is slowly becoming just a “what i eat in a day” blog lmao. It’s the winter break so I’m barely studying right now. I made hotpot and watched Department Q today. Hotpot was delicious. my limited mandarin came in handy today at the chinese grocery store. all the pre packaged hotpot broths were entirely in chinese 😅 I had to try and find one that was vegan. i’m pretty sure it is. but now i’ve got hotpot for dayyyyssss.

also everyone should watch department q. Akram my love. can’t wait till season 2.

I’m on break right now but I thought it would be nice to update you all. I’m progressing in my french, slowly but surly. And I made vegan fish and chips for dinner tonight! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday whichever it be that you celebrate.

I have decided that I want to start studying French. I have studied it in the past before but I wasn't that consistent with it. I've studied German before as well as I took Chinese classes, but my mom is learning French and I want to study and speak it with her. If anyone could recommend some good resources for vocabulary and grammar I would love to have them!

I’m about to take my last final of undergrad. This journey has taken me almost 8 years and I am extremely proud that I made it to this point. My graduation is on saturday and I am beyond excited.

I’ve still got to finish up my applications for graduate school but for now I want to relish in this moment.

the first draft at least. gonna work on some other papers now and then go back over it. I probably have some citation stuff I need to fix and random grammar things. but i’m so proud that it’s done finally.

this is just a little thing but I want to tell it to someone, so i’m gonna send it out to the void that is tumblr.

I feel so smart because my thesis is in multiple languages. I’m writing about the chinese rites controversy of the late 17th century and I can easily read and type out words in chinese. same with latin. I’ve included a few latin quotes in there too. idk it’s just kinda cool and it’s starting to hit me that this is a cool skill that I’ve got.

Working on my thesis today. Extremely busy and I’ve got so many tabs open lol 😅

Today’s goal is to write 5 pages. I’ve done like 1 and a half so far so I really need to lock in and work on it. That’s all I’m going to be doing for the rest of the weekend. Almost done!

Last night I submitted my first graduate school application. William and Mary’s due date is so soon. I didn’t even have a good writing sample to choose from so I scrambled and added a few pages to my last paper I wrote. Fingers crossed it’s good enough! The next rounds of grad applications I’ll finish up in the next few weeks. But for now. Thesis. that’s all I should focus on. I can’t wait until I can just turn my brain off and just watch tv and not thinking about papers lol. Soon!

I just took my Chinese final exam!! The test was entirely in Chinese, including instructions. I got an 80! Im honestly really proud of myself. Chinese is a really hard language so I think I did really really good considering.

I'm not done yet... I still have my thesis to work on and 2 papers. Also... applications for graduate school... Today I'm celebrating with my traditional post exam nap, then I'll go get lunch and head to the library for a few hours tonight probably around 3 or 4 pm.

ugh...I can't wait to be done. The finish line is in sight!

Kind of a lazy day today tbh. I had to go dog sit at my sister's apartment early this morning and I didn't get as much work done as I wanted. I was also exhausted from barely sleeping the night before and Im still recovering from my work week. I didn't have class today which was nice.

The goal by the end of the day is to finish all of these dumb documentary essays. I'm so tired of these things, it feels like its just busy work and they are exhausting and boring. I have 3 left Im going to finish tonight.

Tomorrow is going to be another library marathon. I've got a Chinese test on Thursday and I'm going to spend all day studying Chinese. I might break it up and work on some papers I have but its going to be mostly Chinese. The plan is to leave the library not able to even think in English lol.

Until then its documentary essays, but first, dinner. We are making burrito bowls for dinner tonight. Cheap. Easy. and pretty delicious. Its chilly outside, so we are going to cozy up on the couch and marathon watch all these documentaries tonight.

For those that are curious, I'll link the documentaries that we have to watch and you can watch along with me. I think they would be interesting if I wasnt so stressed about everything else I have to do on top of them. Link 1, link 2. The other one got taken down for copyright violations but my professor posted a copy online for us.
