I want to make an angel, and a human, and I want them to fall in love.
I want the angel to feel pity, to feel sadness, to feel sympathy for the human and all it's had to endure. It accepts the love and loves back, numbs their pain because it cannot fix it, keeps the human safe from harm.
The human loves the angel too, and looks to it for a salvation eternal. It is an impossible love, one neither can sustain for too long. The constant numbness and protection starts to do more harm than good, but without it the world is too harsh and sharp for the human to take anymore.
The angel will try to go, try because it's what the human needs.
The human begs for it to come back, to keep numbing the pain, to keep feeding them love with little sugar spoons (because that's the only way they can tolerate it, in small doses), to keep them nestled within thousands of soft downy feathers and the smell of clouds and God.
The angel will try to go, once a little more love is fed, once a little more numbness is given until things seem to be better.
The human finally relents, and lets the angel fly back up.
The human finally relents, and goes to lay down.
If they cannot be together on earth, maybe they'll have a better chance in heaven.
What Tethers You?
What tethers you to this world?
This world that is melting, freezing, pelted by hurricane and tsunami. This world that is rife with plague, hate, murder, rape, torture. This world that overfeeds and starves, that shelters under miles of gold or a half-torn umbrella.
This world full of generosity and love, kindness and forgiveness. This world that cleans and feeds and clothes, that protects and soothes and hopes. This world that dies and lives, a last breath sighed feeding gasping lungs that supped on amniotic fluid.
What is your hold to it all? Iâm not talking in a theoretical senseâ your soul or your psyche. Iâm not talking too literally either; not your skin and bones, or gravity. I mean it like this: what would make you turn the safety back on? What would make you throw up the pills? What would loosen the knot, open the door to the exhaust filled garage, would take you five-ten-fifteen-three thousand steps back from the ledge to your home?
Is it money, or objects, or experiences yet had? Is it your friends? Is it your family, a parent or grandparent, a sibling or cousin? Is it a pet, a dog or cat or bird, lizard or fish or spider? Is it hope for a future bright, or apathy toward it? Nihilism? Medicine? Drugs? Food? Responsibility? Stubbornness? Spite? Hate? Love?
God? The universe? The possibility that, just maybe, everything will turn out fine?
I know well what mine is, and I see the rope fray every day, as time ticks on. It was once so sturdy and firm, but nobody can live forever. The rest are spiderwebs, sticky and silver-shining under sun and moon. So thin you wouldnât notice them unless you squint, and I wonder just how strong the multitude of these little threads are.
Can they hold me? Can they keep me here? I donât know, I donât think so, so Iâm asking you. Iâm looking for another string, Iâm holding a needle between my fingers and desperately trying to thread the eye with flimsy cobweb.
This rope, this lifeline, I fear it is growing brittle. I fear of drifting away. That fear is still not enough to braid into something that can hold me. I donât want to go, and maybe neither does the balloon clutched by the childâs hand. The inevitable will still happen, as soon as those tiny fingers curl open.
I will still drift into the atmosphere, never to be seen again. Please, tie me to your wrist, and love me until I am wrinkled and withered and bereft of air. If you canât, tie me to something that can. Something sturdy. Tell me what tethers you so it can tether me too.
If not, if I float away and you find me popped by the pressure, bury my body atop of Evelyn Columbelâs. This way, I can always be in her arms. This way, I can always protect her. This way, we will never be apart and alone.
Summer is your worst season.
Letâs start with the basics: heat. Itâs too damn hot no matter where you go, from the beach to your bed beside the fan, or the river that runs alongside your apartment. The medications that make you sane and functional take away more than your sex drive: they take your bodyâs own ability to regulate its temperature.
No more days of walking outside in a black hoodie, not a drop of sweat on you. High school seems like a cool, distant memory. Maybe itâs not just the meds, but the climbing temperatures and erratic weather patterns as well. Or both.
But due to this your body always hurts, youâre always sticky with sweat, and phantom pains buzz around your old surgery site. You feel like you canât walk too much or youâll pass out from the heat. It saps you of energy and patience, making it second, close first, for losing friends.
What they donât understand is you teach small children for eight hours a day in unconditional classrooms. Their little bodies radiate heat, especially after recess and their hair is dripping with sweat. This is the season you repeatedly almost pass out, especially when you have your period, and have to stumble to the hallways before collapsing. They donât understand that after shaping your body into A B Câs and singing and running around, youâre exhausted and at your limit.
Speaking of heat, hereâs the next reason: your body. Once thin and light, youâre now at your heaviest, teetering the line between ânormal weightâ and âoverweightâ depending on the BMI chart. Youâve exchanged bikinis for one pieces, now big shirts and skirts that are waterproof or that you donât mind getting salt water on. At least this is the season you eat the least, because food in the heat makes you sick.
Sweat clogs pores and your back is dotted with acne from it. Same under and between your boobs. Bugs are back and bite, leaving you to wonder: fuck are they mites again, or just because I sat in the grass the other day?
You feel like a beached whale dotted with barnacles, bloated and tired and ready to explode. Spill your guts everywhere, in the sand, in the ocean, on onlookers and cars and streets. Dye it all red, like your face after walking home in 90 degree weather.
Last but not least: trauma.
Apparently your body doesnât give a shit that you spend upwards of $1,000 on therapy a year. The conclusions your brain has reached over 5 years of agonizing conversations and sobbing and screaming and laughing has stopped just there: in your brain. Not even the whole thing, just the reasoning portions.
The body holds trauma like a storage unit that will never get bid upon. February March April May you remain, for the most part, light hearted and reassuring to everyone around you. You might have the same work schedule but your body is cooler and nothing of note has happened in the past that rocks your body with anxiety and deep sorrow.
June comes, and with it a constant nausea, from the heat and your birthday. Despite everyone looking forward to theirs, you almost wish yours would go by like a whisper, barely heard nor recognized. But the child in you screams in delight at birthdays past, with treasure chest cakes and water sprinklers and wrapped presents. The young adult and teenage you curls up in fear and self hate, feeling unworthy of anything, screaming and sobbing when you get $200 from grandma. You thought youâd gotten past it, flaunt fake confidence in front of others and say âitâs my birthday and Iâm important!â For a laugh or a smile and eye roll. They think you really feel this way. You donât. You hate it. You donât want to get older. You donât want the attention you donât deserve.
Being born is not a celebration for you. The gift of life you never asked for and tried so many times to throw away. A wretched, fetid present, a box filled with placenta and umbilical cord crawling with maggots and fat biting flies. The gift of life. What a joke. Itâs the responsibility of life. The burden of life. The sometimes-joy of life.
June is when you were kicked out. When your goods were smashed on the blacktop, and your mother screamed to get out of her sight. June is when you packed your life into a backpack and lived out of that for weeks until you found a temporary home in your managers guest room. Than some sofas. Then your first apartment. Your body remembers the fight and flight, even if itâs dull. A blade is still a blade, even if its edge no longer shines and is filled with nicks and cracks. It can still hurt. It still hurts.
Itâs an unknowable ache that holds onto you until July, like a tick ripped off but its head remains.
So, summer is your worst season. You were born in it, you were cast away in it. You sweat and bake in it, you bite your skin and slam your head in it. You run along sand and ocean in it. You cover your body in it. You tremble with weakness in it. Fuck summer. Fuck summer. Fuck summer.
You hate summer.
There is a little girl sitting on the floor, surrounded by her favorite toys.
She is alone, but content, and plays by herself with patience unknown to most chldren. She waits for a friend to reach back.
Hours go by, then days, then weeks. The same toys, though some new and old come and go, still hold her attention. A friend finally comes over, with their own toybox in tow. Still, she is excited, tosses her own goods aside to play with her friends favorite trinkets. They arenât quite what she likes, but the time and happiness shared with her friend is greater than anything else.
The friend goes, promising more playdates. The door closes, and she is alone again.
Sometimes, more often than getting visits, the little girl goes over others homes, to their rooms. She brings her toys in a shiny backpack, but its always put to the side. Her toys arenât what they want, and the time and happiness shared with her friends are greater than anything else.
She goes home, promising to come again. She closes the door, and she is alone again.
Soon, her legs grow tired of walking, tired of making the trek to and fro, miles walked in shoes once shiny but now worn and dirty. She packs her toys, but they never see the light of another room. She wants to play with them, to share them so desperately, but nobody seems to care. She presents them, showcases them, tries her best to garner interest, but not a single friend looks her way. So, because it is easier, and because the time and happiness shared with her friends is greater than anything else... she settles for something else.
There is a little girl sitting on the floor, surrounded by her favorite toys. But what are toys if not to be shared? Once bright and enrapturing, their paint and varnish is now chipped and dulled. She still loves them dearly, but is tired of having to make all the stories herself. She loves her friends dearly, but is tired of having to go over their homes all by herself.Â
Surely, surely they will come and visit too!
Hours go by, then days, then weeks. Then months. The door remains closed, and the knob sports a thick layer of dust. It blankets everything, from the carpet to the toys to the girls dingy hair. Her rosy cheeks shine through fresh tear tracks that run down and gather cold under her chin. Her legs have gone numb waiting, her eyes are dry and raw. Her lungs are filled with dust and screams, but nobody hears them to check.
With teardrops hanging onto your eyelashes, the lights above distort into fireworks. Raining down with each blink, like stars on pause when you stare, saltwater bending and stretching wavelengths like taffy. With these diamonds raining down above you, how can you still sob?
Life is beautiful, until it isnât. Life isnât beautiful, until it is.
Which one will you choose to see?
When you slowly rise from the floor, your hair falls in front of your face. You inhale and smell her, burnt and processed hair, with a faint smell of cigarettes (but you donât even smoke). You are more and more like that mother you despise every single day. You grow more and more into her shadow, filling it out, making it darker.
You smell it in your hair, and you see it in your jawline. Wide and sharp like hers, exactly like hers. It makes you want to push your face against a sand belt, smoothing out the rough edges until youâre unrecognizable. So when you look in the mirror you donât have to see her.
You see it in the mirror, and you feel it in your brain. Telling you not to cry, to stop being dramatic, to stop being embarrassing to others. You must be perfect, smile and sit still, say nothing out of line, and always always always say âof courseâ and âyesâ. There is little room for error and when you do, when you crack, you hear a voice tell you âI can give you something to cry aboutâ, and just like that your eyes are dry. She is always echoing through your head, directing you, even if you canât hear it.
You feel it in your brain and you watch it in your actions. One drink, two, three, a shot, four five six black. Friday, you remember so little after the lights suddenly turned off in your head, leaving the most base and primal part of you, the most honest part, to direct you. Vomit stains the sidewalk and you can barely walk. So you lay down, you lay down and beg for them to leave you there, you want to die there. They donât let you. Amanda hears the pure pain in your voice, but Megan is too drunk to see.
She said you were crying, and youâre embarrassed. âI cried?â âWell you didnât cry, cry. But your voice was just... hurt. So much hurt.â
Yeah. That sounds about right.
