Drinking in the utter, devastating angst that is Whumpee watching the Caretaker that promised them “No one will ever hurt you for as long as I’m alive.” get killed by Whumper.
every now and then i’ll see the same old tired discourse about someone being tired of fanfiction writers mischaracterizing their blorbo but when it comes from someone who also writes fanfiction it kind of just feels like they want to prop up their own works by saying “my stuff is clearly superior to this garbage because i actually write this character correctly”
it also feels like thinly veiled right wing propaganda about the prevalence of smut and how “anyone who enjoys this slop has a porn rotted brain” bc most pwp works are obviously not doing deep character studies and i’m tired of people saying sects of the fandom are doing fandom wrong
--
There’s nothing wrong with porn, but pretending it’s anything but an act of consumption or pretending it’s about community building on the same wavelength as character study work is delusional.
I am not saying pwp fans don’t build their own communities in their own way. I am saying it’s not the same.
Porn is built on immediate gratification. That’s literally how it’s wired.
Character study work is built on delayed gratification and requires analytical thinking.
People can enjoy both depending on what their emotional needs are at different times.
We are living in a time where consumption based fandom participation is more prevalent. The algo trained people to scroll instead of reblog and curate and add to the thing they are consuming. People aren’t sitting with things as much and making the choice to actually digest it.
Pointing that out is not right wing anti porn propaganda. It’s just calling a spade a spade.
What a hilariously dumb opinion.
Why would I read a character study that doesn't cover one of the most important driving forces in my characters' lives, desire?
--
This attitude has come up in fannish discussion over and over, and each time, it becomes obvious that a whole bunch of you are more asexual than you realize but also that the vast, vast majority of you have never seen a single art film with sex in it.
Sex is frequently used as a way to dig into characters' fears of intimacy, their trauma over their bodies, the subtle nuances of their emotions about another character.
Sure, the occasional dude might just jerk it to a standard porno before rolling over and going to sleep. Personally, if I just want to get off like that, I flick the bean to pimple popping videos on youtube.
Fanfic, though, that's a different story. The fact that we're bothering with characters we already know in the first place and the fact that we're going for writing usually means that there's a whole psychological element involved. The same is often true for kink, whether or not it's in a fic or reading context. There can be no interest without significant build up and context. A lot of the kinky little weirdos who populate tumblr are the type that just doesn't get revved up over anything quick and simple.
Even beyond that... "gooning" is supposed to refer to a particular sort of edging, I guess for cis dudes, and a lot of people reading here have cunts.
A cunt is not a one-and-done instant orgasm machine.
A cunt often requires quite a bit of build up over time and can go like the energizer bunny. Orgasm frequently isn't even the aim of masturbation for cunt-havers.
"Literally how it's wired?"
Why would porn for the enjoyment of cunt-havers ever be wired that way?

My favorite movie as a teenager was Crash. Not the stupid one that won an Oscar: the Cronenberg car crash fetishist movie.
Every single moment of sex or lust in that film is drenched in double and triple meanings. There's a scene that my film school class assumed was a blow job, but actually, one of the guys is licking the other's tattoo—a tattoo done by a medical tattoo artist of what the imprint of a hood ornament would look like.
The entire film and the book on which it is based are a meditation on modern life and how technology intersects with our bodies and minds. It is at once deeply analytical and intensely horny.
There are movies like Lucía y el sexo where the whole thing is about Lucia as stalker fan and her complicated emotional life. All of the other sex is weird psychological meditations on what makes those other characters tick.
Or how about Secretary, where most of the sex scenes are just spanking with no fucking? The whole thing is this complex interplay of her dawning self-actualization and his insecurities and fear of his own taste for sadism, frequently expressed through sex/kink scenes.
What about Lie with Me? The sex is vastly more extensive and explicit than even in most art films, but it's still all about the characters' emotions, and I don't mean romantic ones. The lead seems to be floating through her days, not sure what she wants. The love interest is dealing with caretaking in the last few weeks of his father's life.
--
Yeah, those aren't fic, but my brain is too fried tonight to go through horny fic faves to figure out what is intelligible to someone outside of that fandom.
You can say "I meant PWP, not plotty-with-sex!" but plenty of people label short fics that primarily consist of sex as "PWP" even when the sex is intended as character study and is roiling with subtext and thematic importance.
--
Of course the idea that sex isn't art comes from a conservative society.
It doesn't mean the person expressing this is conservative though. It just means they have a narrow, blinkered media diet.
--
I have no interest in building fandom community with people who cannot understand that porn is art.
My community exists to lionize desire.
A porny fic of 500 words isn't just those 500 words: it is a little cherry on top of the sundae of canon and shared interpretation of that canon and shared experience of fandom tropes and trends. PWP is never just those few words.
Algorithms don't encourage fandom's history of horny, individualistic excess: they encourage fluffy, easily digestible, and polite art.
If anything, the trite, short, nothingburger works usually labeled as "character study" are what the modern internet pushes.
You know, I straight-up do not trust anyone who reduces porny fanfiction down to immediate brainless gratification for the masses that has no deeper meaning or is inherently lesser than sexless character study. Even when the person expressing the view isn't a self-identified conservative, they tend to be reproducing conservative ideas with a vaguely progressive-sounding veneer—like the reblogger above reducing PWP fans to algorithm-influenced consumption-focused zombies. Not only is that demonstrably untrue, but porny fic has been a staple of fandom since long before this current slant toward silent consumption. On top of that, the silent consumption trend affects everything from toothless fluff to full-scale canon rewrites to artsy character study to PWP. It's a change in the broader fandom attitudes, not something limited to or even exemplified by porny fic.
Moreover, why and how the hell is porn being denigrated as easy, mindless gratification when a myriad of fluff tropes (e.g., found family) and non-sexual whump and even the ever-growing assortment of modern/mundane AUs can also be reduced to that?
I could also go on about how good characterization and unrepentantly filthy sex aren't mutually exclusive, just like how porn can also be intense, in-depth character study, but I frankly think that anyone who doesn't already know that isn't anyone I want to reach.
Also, this:
I have no interest in building fandom community with people who cannot understand that porn is art.
Seconded wholeheartedly.
I am not saying immediate gratification is bad. I am saying it’s a different thing. It serves a function.
And I agree with you, whumpy fics fill the same need.
I am more hung up on the fact that people want to say that immediate gratification is the same thing as deep analytical enjoyment.
Because I am someone who used to make desire objects (nude paintings of myself,) and I also write smut with plot. I used my own body as a research subject by participating in sex work. It bothers me when we aren’t honest about the difference in how we enjoy different forms.
And the point I'm making is that your automatic equivalence of porny fanfiction to immediate gratification is the issue. It's not a case of people enjoying "both"—rather, it can be one and the same.
Writers and readers of porn in fandom come in an immense variety. Some are writing and reading porn for immediate gratification. Some are doing it as character study. There's also room for multiple nuanced experiences between these two ends. Porn and deep analytical engagement are not mutually exclusive.
You're asking people to adhere to a conception of "honesty" that's not an objective reality.
That’s actually a really good point. Thank you.
But I think the other honesty I am talking about is people enjoying it, then treating it as taboo and then keep demanding desire objects to be made for their enjoyment while not owning it by digesting and engaging. Even in anonymous online spaces. But like others have said on this chain, that’s just how people treat creativity in general.
I use my extremely distinctive legal name as my fannish handle, have kept the same handle since the 90s, and helped build AO3 for the purpose of protecting queer content and outrageous porn. My blog is regularly home to gleeful appreciation of out-there kinks and mockery of hypocrites who can't stay out of fandoms or kinks they both hate and love.
Who are these people you are talking about? Because they certainly are not here on my posts.
yeah I am not talking about the people here or in fandom in general I am talking about the connection between real life and internet consumption. It’s great you have built a community where people are open about their kinks here, but in daily life most people aren’t. I don’t think that’s untrue? Most people are very divorced from their own desires.
And when I said sexual regression (I should have used backsliding instead of regression) what I mean is the prevalence of regressive gender dynamics in fiction—which we also see as a trend celebrated outside of fandom in other social media content. Just women infantilizing themselves, wanting to identify that way. And the interesting thing is, some of these people will say the correct girl power thing in irl spaces, but they secretly enjoy fiction or art that support this secret desire.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with finding comfort in that particular desire, but it’s the part where they say one thing in public, and want something else in private that’s causing dissonance in everything. I think that goes beyond just being embarrassed. Because they absolutely don’t have to perform girl power irl, but they choose to, while wanting something else in private.
...
Are you saying that you honestly think that there's a contradiction to being all Girl Power in your daily life but being horny for fsub?
That's so silly!
I'm not personally into that, but it's a super common taste profile. Lots and lots and lots of people in the world are subs. Lots and lots and lots of people have sexual fantasies of being catered to. A lot of those rape-ier fsub fantasies where she lies there like a dead fish and he just does stuff without asking are very much about the woman not having to put in any work whatsoever. In real life, it would suck. In fiction, it's hot. There is no contradiction here.
It's perfectly normal to be a feminist who wants to get spanked. This is BDSM 101.
Replacing 'regression' with 'backsliding' doesn't make this any better. There is not some march of progress where women learn to not get wet for male doms.
Rape fantasies are normal.
Subby fantasies are normal.
(Some of these overlap and some don't.)
Yes, some women are hypocrites and some women do infantilize themselves, but it does not sound like you are talking about the cases where this is actually happening.
It sounds like you misunderstand and dislike a common type of sexuality. It sounds like you are projecting meanings and intent that are not there.
There won't be any new drawings for a while because This is happening to me right now
Hello, dear Zarla. I drew SpamYellow from your AU (it was supposed to be a New Year's gift, but it was a bit late). What do you think?

For the first time in my life, I have been given a moeblob blorbo who is actually a moeblob in his canon. He's a literal gijinka clone of anxiety and sadness, and I don't even have to flanderize him because he's a shivering blob by default.
I understand the moeblobbers now, and why people like to bend canon to make a tragic character into a full-on a moeblob. I'm going to break him.

Huh! I always thought 'moeblob' was a description of an art style!
