Hi everyone! I have created a new taglist form (thank you @atiny-piratequeenâ for giving me the idea) and I would really appreciate if yâall would fill this out if you would like to be tagged in my work. I know that I havenât been writing much lately but I have been writing small things here and there and hopefully will continue to write more. Thank you for the continued support anyway!
Summary: San goes into heat while he and Mingi are at work, and Mingi tries his best.
Tags/Warnings: A/B/O, Grocery Store AU, Slight Angst, Implied Sexual Content, FluffÂ
A/N: This was a very self-indulgent fic and I'm kind of proud of it. If I had put it off any longer I would've convinced myself to not post it so here it goes. I wonât be tagging anyone in this one because I know some people donât like this topic and I need to update my tag system ;-; As always, please let me know if I forgot to tag something.

San sighed, watching as each open check stands line grew longer and longer. He was bagging as quickly as he could, his signature customer service smile plastered on his face as he greeted each customer. Something just felt off, and he really couldnât place it. He figured maybe it was just another off day at work. It was getting pretty busy, and it wasnât even noon. He scratched lightly at the scent blocker patch as he wondered whether or not there was a holiday or some event coming up.
âSan? Did you hear me?â Seonghwa, the checker, raised a brow at him. âCan you go grab a bag of ice for the nice customer, please?â
San nodded, color creeping into his cheeks. âYes, of course! SorryâŚâ
He ran to grab the ice, humming softly at the contrast of cold against his skin. It finally clicked as he carried the ice back to the check stand. He nearly ran back, smiling politely as he bagged the ice and placed it in the customerâs cart. Once Seonghwa was finished ringing him up, San hurriedly told him, âHyung, I gotta go. Iâll be in the breakroom; you gotta call Mingi-â
âSan, no, itâs not time for your break yet and itâs crazy busy-â
âHyung tell him itâs an 8413 and tell him to hurry.â
Seonghwaâs eyes widened, and he nodded, jerking his head in the direction of the breakroom. âGo.â
San whispered a quick âthank youâ as he nearly ran to the back and into the breakroom. As he sat down, he heard Seonghwa call over the intercom, âMingi, 8413 in the breakroom. Mingi, 8413, breakroom.â San took deep breaths, mentally cursing himself for leaving his water bottle up at the check stand. He tried to focus on his breathing, he really did, but all he could hear was the blood rushing in his ears. After what seemed like half an hour (but was really no more than 5 minutes), he heard Mingiâs deep soothing voice in his ear.Â
âSannie, let me take you home. Seonghwa called Joong to clock you out, but we gotta go now baby. Can you stand up? Or is that too much?âÂ
San shook his head and stood from the chair slowly, checking the chair to make sure nothing was left behind before grabbing Mingiâs arm and letting him lead him through the store and out to their car. If they were getting weird looks, San wasnât focused enough to notice anyway. He let Mingi guide him into the car and buckle him in, closing his eyes and resting his head back.
âYour heat wasnât due for another 2 days, I wonder what triggered it to start earlyâŚ.â Mingi mumbled, kicking the AC on full blast. âNo worries, weâll get you home and get you comfortable okay?âÂ
San only nodded, head growing fuzzier by the second. He was quiet throughout the drive home. Mingi almost thought he was asleep until he heard a soft groan.
âJust hold on baby, weâre almost home. Just a few more minutes.â
Everything was beginning to be too much for San. His work uniform suddenly felt too rough, the seat belt too tight. There was too much touching him, all except for the one touch he really craved. His mind was clouded, and he could just barely register the car stopping. Then his alpha was finally touching him, lifting him from the vehicle and placing soft kisses on his head, but it wasnât enough. He was in a losing battle against his omegaâbetween succumbing to the fuzziness in his head and keeping his grip on reality. Subconsciously, he nosed roughly at the patch covering Mingiâs scent glands, and for a moment, the alpha didnât know what he was getting at.
âSannie, no, you canât take that off baby.â
âAlpha, youâll take care of me wonât you?â
Mingi bit his lip, wondering how to answer. Of course, he wanted nothing more than to stay with his omega and take care of him through his heat, pressing him down into the mattress and fucking him full of his pups. But Mingi had recently been promoted to assistant manager of his department, and how would it look if he left in the middle of his shift and didnât return? Not just to his coworkers but to his higher-ups as well. Would they think him irresponsible and unfit to hold the position, demoting him back to just a clerk? Was it fair? Of course not, but the boost in his pay will help them save up to provide for the family they want to start.Â
How was Mingi supposed to tell his barely-lucid omega that he was leaving him during his heat to go back to work?Â
âMingi?â
âYouâll be taken care of, my sweet omega, I promise.âÂ
Mingi carried him inside and straight to the nesting room, which San had been filling up in the last few days. He laid him gently in the middle of Mingiâs stolen possessions and watched him bury his face into one of his sweaters, desperate for his scent. The alpha left the room and quickly returned with an ice-cold water jug specifically for this occasion and towels.Â
âBaby, can you roll over for me so I can lay this out?â Mingi asked sweetly, setting the jug down on the bedside table. San nodded and rolled onto his side, further surrounding himself in the alphaâs scent and getting lost in it.Â
Mingi laid down three towels, knowing full well theyâd probably be soaked through by the time he came back home anyway. He then set about removing the omegaâs slick-soaked uniform carefully and setting them aside to be washed. Now fully naked, the omega looked up at his alpha through half-lidded eyes, clouded by lust as he waited for the alpha to come closer, but he never did. He whined in that tone that usually had Mingi rushing to please him, but nothing happened. Maybe, he wondered in his haze because he couldnât smell it on him. If he could just get the patch off, his alpha would know just how much he needed himâŚ
Mingi slapped a hand over his nose and mouth, eyes full of nothing but guilt as San only whined louder. He watched him turn onto his stomach and present his slicked-up entrance to the alpha, face resting on the pillow and watching him, waiting.
âIâm sorry babyâŚ.â
San lifted his head, eyes going wide.Â
âIâve left your toys and the lube in the top drawerââ
âAlphaâŚâ
ââand thereâs some painkillers and your heat suppressants in thereââ
âAlpha!â
ââbut you know you can only take one or the other, not both, okay? Iâll be back as soon as my shift is overââ
âMingi!â San was crying now, crawling to the edge of the bed but not trusting himself to stand. His omega felt as if he were being rejected by its alpha. How could he leave when his omega needed him most? What had he done to deserve coming second to his job? He reached out in an attempt to grab Mingi, but the alpha stepped back, out of his reach. San could practically feel his omegaâs heart break.Â
The tiniest of voices in the back of Sanâs mind reasoned that he couldnât just leave his work behind, that thatâs not how the real world works. But that voice was drowned out in his heat-clouded mind as sobs bubbled from deep down.Â
Mingi wanted to comfort him so badly, it physically pained him to stand his ground. He wondered if removing his own scent blocker to release calming pheromones would help the omega or only hurt him more. But he knew that if he wasnât going to help the omega, standing and watching him cry would solve nothing either. So with one final whispered, âIâm sorry,â he left the room and their home. He fought his own wolf, every instinct telling him to go back and care for their omega. But he started the car and went back to work, knowing heâd have a lot to make up for when he came home again. He hoped that San could forgive him.Â
San was a wreck. When Mingi left the room, his sobs had only grown louder, drowning out the sound of the car starting and leaving the driveway. His wolf had never felt rejection like this, not during a heat. All he could think about was how Mingi stepped away when he reached for him. Was he disgusted by him? Did he just not want him anymore?Â
After what felt like hours, the heartbreak and the exhaustion from crying, coupled with the pain he felt in his core from not being filled with a knot, made him curl up, falling into a deep sleep.
â
Mingi couldnât even focus. He was clearly distracted as he stacked apples on its stand; all of his coworkers could tell something was off when he came back. Working the rest of his shift felt like actual hell, dragging on without end. Honestly, heâd only had about three hours left in his shift when he came back to work, but it felt like a full 8 hours when all he could think about was how his omega was doing and how he could make it up to him. He decided heâd pick up some of his favorite foods on the way home, maybe even a few desserts.
A sense of calm washed over him in the midst of his thinking, and he was snapped out of his train of thought. Looking up, he noticed one of his coworkersâa very sweet omegaâmoving her scent blocker patch to her forearm.Â
âChungha-ssi, youâll get in troubleâŚ.â
She just smiled and shook her head gently, wrapping an arm around his shoulders in a comforting gesture. Â
âAll these people here, they wonât know it was me. Besides, you looked really stressed and I just wanted you to calm down a bit. Youâre too in your head, I can tell.â
Mingi smiled at her as they both went back to stacking produce, mumbling a soft âthank you.âÂ
â
When his shift had finally ended, he was practically sprinting back to his car. Heâd never driven so fast in his life. He did stop to grab the food for San, and heâd gotten flowers, cake, and ice cream from work. He knew heâd have to do some damage control back at home and hoped it wouldnât be too bad. He just hoped San would forgive him.Â
He parked in the driveway, quickly gathered all of the bags and flowers, and brought them inside. Immediately upon stepping through the threshold, the house smelled sour like rotten mangoes, and his heart sank. He dropped everything onto the kitchen counter and made his way to the room heâd left San in, his heart breaking at the sight of him curled up, face red with tear tracks staining his cheeks, body covered in sweat and dried-up slick.Â
He walked to the bed and sat beside the sleeping omega, gently rubbing a hand over his shoulder before waking him.Â
âSannie? Wake up, baby, I brought you some food. You need to eatâŚ.â
Sanâs eyes cracked open, adjusting until he could make out Mingiâs face. Mingi expected the omega to be excited now that he was home or maybe to scream at him. What he hadnât expected was for the omega to stare up at him with watery eyes, lip trembling.Â
âBaby whatâs wrong? No more crying, okay? Iâm here now..â
âDo you not want me anymore?â
Mingi certainly hadnât expected that.Â
âWhat?â
San pushed himself up, putting a bit of distance between them. He looked around him, everywhere but at Mingi.Â
âYou left me. You wouldnât even touch me and⌠you had this pitying look in your eyes.âÂ
San wiped away the fresh tears falling from his eyes, further curling in on himself.Â
âBaby I just had to goââ
âAnd you smell like another omega. You left me to go help another omega?âÂ
San could barely keep himself together as he finally looked up at Mingi. Mingiâs heart broke, eyes wide as he wondered where he couldâve gotten that idea.Â
âSan, no, no of course I didnât! Come here! Can I hold you, please?â
The omega hesitated before nodding, crawling into the alphaâs lap. Mingi wrapped him tight in his arms, rubbing his cheek into the top of his hair, feeling the omega scent him heavily, still sobbing into his shoulder.
âOh, baby⌠one of our coworkers just hugged me earlier. I was so worried about you today, everyone could smell it off me from a mile away. She was just worried. Iâm sorry, I should have showered as soon as I got back, I wasnât thinking about anything but you.âÂ
Mingiâs hand gently guided San away from his shoulder, using his thumb to wipe away what few tears he could.Â
âMy poor baby⌠I am so sorry for leaving you all alone. But Iâll make it up to you, I promise. For now, how about we get you all cleaned up and fed, hmm? I got food from that Chinese food place that you like and I got you some sweets.âÂ
Gradually, as Mingi spoke softly, Sanâs tears slowed, and he leaned into his touch more and more. He nodded, wrapping his arms around the alphaâs neck. Mingi chuckled and wrapped his arms around the omegaâs waist in turn, knowing that he wanted to be carried.
âMy poor baby, you must be so tired,â Mingi cooed, standing them both up from the bed. âBut you donât have to worry about anything now that Iâm home. Iâll take care of everything, and I already had tomorrow off anyway. I am all yours, okay?âÂ
San brushed his nose against the crook of his neck before resting his head there, finally relaxing for the first time that day.Â

Mingi stared at Seonghwa from across the food court, sighing wistfully and eliciting a groan from Yeosang, who sat next to him.Â
âWhy wonât you just go ask him already? I swear you do this every day and itâs making my lunch taste awful.â
âBecause why would I do that?â
âSo you can stop irritating the shit out of me. Besides, what have you got to lose?â
âMy dignity.â
âOh boohoo, you barely have any to begin with.â
âRemind me again why the fuck weâre friends?â
âBecause Iâm the only person willing to put up with your shit for this long. Who else would do it for eight years and counting?â
Mingi huffed and pushed his food away, muttering under his breath, âYouâre insane if you think Iâm doing that.â
âSometimes being insane is the way to go. Youâll never know if you donât try, right?â
Mingi groaned and dropped his head down to the table. He knew Yeosang was right, and he hated it. He had had the biggest crush on Seonghwa for a few years, but he felt as if he could barely look or talk to him without getting shy. Heâs made a fool of himself in front of the other plenty of times since theyâve met. Heâs sure Seonghwa only sees him as the bumbling fool that he occasionally has classes with and sometimes has to tolerate for the sake of their friend circle.Â
They have a few mutual friends, forcing them to interact in certain situations. Study groups, hangouts, parties, and even the occasional club meeting. But for some reason, the elder just seemed out of reach to him. There was one night that changed things for Mingi just the slightest bit.Â
The only time heâd felt close to him was when heâd taken him back to his dorm after a party to make sure he got there safe. The elder and their friends had gotten incredibly drunk and Mingi, one of the few sober people, offered to get him to bed. Seonghwa could barely stand, leaning heavily on Mingi as he almost dragged him to his car. It was a bit of a hassle to get him sat and buckled in, but he eventually succeeded and was soon on the road back to the campus.  Â
âMingi⌠has anyone ever told you howâ how pretty you are?â Seonghwa slurred as Mingi helped him out, hiccuping every few words.Â
Mingi knew that these were nothing more than the words of a drunk and that he shouldnât believe anything the man was saying. Nonetheless, his face burned pink, and he turned away, smiling.
âNo, and Iâm sure you wonât remember telling me either.â Mingi chuckled.
âI mean it! Really!â He hiccuped again, a pout forming on his lips. âAnd youâd look even prettier in my bed.â
Mingi choked, head snapping towards the other. He doesnât mean it, Mingi told himself. He shook his head and continued hauling him towards his dorm. Once they reached the entrance, Mingi carefully felt Seonghwaâs pockets for his wallet, fishing it out and pulling out the key card to get in.Â
Seonghwa giggled, clumsily reaching across his shirt. âHere? Really?â
âNO!â Mingiâs eyes went wide, holding his arms still. âNo, hyung, weâre not doing anything anywhere. I just need to get you inside okay?â
Seonghwa pouted again, deflating against and making himself impossibly heavier. Mingi managed to get him into the elevator, through the hallway, and into his dorm in relative peace. Once the door shut, Mingi guided him straight to the bed and sat him down against the wall.Â
He immediately moved around the neat room, thinking about what Seonghwa would do if he were sober. He gathered his pajamas, painkillers, and a glass of water.Â
âHyung, Iâm gonna change your clothes okay?â He spoke slowly, gently as he climbed onto the bed. âJust changing your clothes, nothing else okay? And then weâll get you comfortable in bed so you can rest.âÂ
Mingi continued to talk mindlessly through everything he did, face aflame at every inch of exposed skin, but remained respectful. Once he was changed, Mingi held the glass carefully to his lips.
âHave some water; itâll make you feel better. At least it should help a bitâŚ.âÂ
Though he was a bit clumsy at first, spilling water around his mouth and down his shirt collar, he had eventually drank enough to satisfy Mingi. Glass set aside, Mingi climbed off the bed and helped Seonghwa lie down slowly so as to not make him feel sick. He pulled the blanket up over him and sat at the edge of the bed.Â
âMingiâŚ?â
âYes hyung?â
âYouâre aâŚ.â Seonghwa began to doze, fighting to keep his eyes open. âYouâre a good guyâŚ.â
Mingi smiled and carded a hand through his hair gently. âGet some rest hyung.â
Mingi waited there until Seonghwa fell asleep, hand still in his hair until he stood up. Keeping his footsteps as light as possible, he grabbed a trash can and put an extra bag inside before placing it beside his bed. He set the painkillers beside the glass of water on the dresser, along with his wallet, keycard, and his phone, putting it on the charger.Â
With one last look at Seonghwaâs sleeping form, Mingi left his room and closed the door behind him, and started on his way home.Â
That was about a month or so ago now, and though they never brought it up passed that following dayâall Mingi told him was that he brought him home and got home comfortableâMingi couldnât shake the feeling that the elderâs drunken stammering had some truth or meaning to it. After all, they do say that the truth may come out when one is drunk. So maybe he had a chance?
Considering Yeosangâs words, he sighed and stood up. His friendâs eyes widened, shock evident on his face. He didnât think Mingi would do it now. Mingi made his way across the food court, heart pounding and his hands sweating as his sight zeroed in on Seonghwa. Seonghwa turned and smiled as he watched Mingi approach.Â
âHey Mingi, whatâs up?â
âHyung, could I talk to you for a second please?â
Seonghwaâs smile faltered the tiniest bit, brows furrowing in concern.Â
âIs everything alright?â
âY-Yes! No, of course! Itâs nothing bad! I just wanted to run something by you real quick. Please?â
Seonghwaâs smile brightened, and he nodded, standing from his seat and following Mingi to an empty hallway off to the side, away from onlookers.
âWhatâs this about, Mingi?â
Mingi kept his eyes downcast on his fingers, taking a moment to think about what he wanted to say. He really hadnât thought this far ahead, but it was now or nothing.
âMingi..?â
âI really like you, hyung; I have for a while now. I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if Iâ if maybe you, tooâ umâŚ.â
âAh, Mingi⌠I suspected that you had some feelings for me recently⌠Iâm flattered, really, and I appreciate the interest, butâŚ.â
Mingi deflated, shaking his head.Â
âItâs okay. You donât feel the same way. I get it. I took a chance. Itâs okay.â
Mingi lifted his face, a broken little smile on his lips.
âI just hope this wonât make things awkward between us.â
Mingi didnât even wait for a response before making his way back to the table where Yeosang sat, holding his smile.Â
âMingi! Howâd itâŚ.â Yeosang paused when he saw the first tear fall from Mingiâs eye. âOh, MingiâŚâ
Mingi didnât even bother to respond, grabbing his bag and walking away silently. Yeosang deflated, cleaning up their trash quickly before following after him.Â
âMingi wait!â Yeosang called after him, jogging to catch up.Â
Seonghwa felt horrible; the image of Mingiâs broken sad smile burned into his brain. He swore he saw tears in his eyes.Â
Yeosang felt terrible but more so guilty. Heâd gotten Mingiâs hopes up and practically set him up for failure. And despite all thisâdespite the hurt he felt for seeing his closest friend in so much pain and seeing him so broken, he couldnât help the wave of relief that washed over him. He knew it was cruel, but he didnât think he could take having his best friendâthe love of his lifeâtaken away from him just yet. And he didnât think heâd ever be ready. Heâd help him through any heartbreak he had to, but he would never confess. Never. He refused to be the guy Mingi fell for only in a time of desperation and vulnerability. Yeosang would not be the rebound guy, but he was so desperately in love with his best friend that it hurt. Maybe they could just hurt together.
