dearest mutuals,

my beloved mother passed away recently and it made me reflect on a lot of things...

as a teenager, like almost all teenagers back then, I didn't really think much about accepting many strangers on my social media... but in the last few years it's started to bother me. so, a few months ago, I had already decided to delete my Instagram and maybe all my social media accounts as well.

when my mom passed I almost did it, indeed, but now, a few weeks later and after some conversations with my close friends (and after rereading an old message my mom sent me last year about taking pics and not deleting them), I realized I'd like to keep my social media, just not with the people who are on them right now (saying mainly about Instagram). so, I decided I wouldn't delete my Instagram, but since I'm too lazy to do such a troublesome task as analyzing all my followers etc, I resolved to just create a new account. then, I also felt like I needed a fresh start everywhere. I changed my phone number and email addresses. I created a new account on Pinterest and I'm planning to do the same with Spotify. and I even deactivated my Facebook since I really don't like that place...

finally, there's Tumblr. I just can't get over Tumblr. I probably never will. but I need a fresh start here, too, so I decided to create a new account here, too.

yes, I'm going to delete this one. but only after I'm sure all of you, my sweethearts, are still with me on my new account!

Caterpillars in Carmilla

Caterpillars, larvae, are not just a term for biology. Le fanu studied law at Trinity College so Latin would be a language he would have to have some familiarity with. It is not unlikely he would have been aware that a larva/larvae in its original Roman context is a mask used to represent dead ancestors. Representing the dead larvaa became associated with lemures, the restless dead who died violently or who were not buried with appropriate funery rituals.

Taking the Roman idea of a larva, Carmilla could be read using a double meaning describing girls as caterpillars/larvae. It would certainly pertain to her, a vampire. She was murdered and became undead. Carmilla is as much as telling Laura she is a vampire but wrapping it in the language of science with larva's better known meaning Carmilla's true nature remains masked, a larva. Caterpillars metaphorically die to become butterflies but she wants Laura to die to become a vampire with her. One kind of larva to the next.

There is a neat video by an Italian professor of magic and the occult who talks about larva as the Romans understood them and how those ideas transferred to modern occult practices which is worth watching as Halloween comes along. Angela Pucca at Angela's Symposium is a great site if occult and esoteric knowledge is your interest.

I need everyone to board the Laura from Le Fanu's Carmilla is a lying liar who lies train now. The confessional style of the novella is clearly her posturing to absolve herself in the eyes of the reader, either for the lesbianism or something else that she is carefully skirting around. I thought this was pretty clear, but so many people think she's telling them the truth. She's a liar! She fucked that vampire nasty! She is protecting herself with lies! I need everyone to board this train of truth before I start biting people.
