Meet Snowball, a house cat who made legal and forensic science history. His DNA marks the first time non-human DNA was used as evidence in court.

In October 1994, Doug Beamish reported his wife Shirley missing in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Her body was found days later, buried near her blood splattered car. Also found was a man’s jacket covered in her blood and tiny white hairs from a cat. Some strands had enough flesh attached to be tested against the family pet’s blood. It was a match, with a 45 million to 1 chance of another cat having the same DNA. Douglas was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 18 years to life. This case inspired many countries to implement DNA databases for pets.
