All sentient beings, human or non-human, share a fundamental right; the right to not be intentionally and needlessly harmed or killed. No sentient being, human or non-human, can therefore be ethically enslaved, exploited, mistreated or murdered.

All animals deserve basic moral consideration - that being the right to not be intentionally and needlessly harmed.
Speciesism doesn't exist
One of the main arguments of veganism is that breeding livestock takes up so much land and the fact that they are bred senselessly creates animal overpopulation which crowds their environment. If one said the same thing about humans, that human overpopulation exhausted the environment it would be eco-fascism. So you accept that humans and animals cannot be treated the same, you accept that species are not equal.
This isn't a main argument of veganism. Veganism has nothing to with the environment, its solely a social justice movement opposing all forms of animal exploitation and advocating for the rights of all sentient animals to live free of exploitation and suffering. You are making a claim about veganism which simply isn't based in facts. Yes, the environmental effects of animal exploitation is a massive issue, but it is not a vegan issue. It has nothing to do with veganism.
Veganism is: An ethical stance opposing all forms of animal exploitation.
Veganism isn't: An environmental issue about overcrowding and land use. Though certainly the fact that so much of the earths surface and resources is taken up by animal agriculture in order to needlessly exploit, torture and slaughter other sentient beings is a massive problem.
You are also misunderstanding what speciesism means. Speciesism is a form of discrimination against those who don’t belong to a certain species. For example, dogs, cows, and dolphins are regarded very differently in some societies than in others. Speciesism is the general public in the UK treating dogs as companion animals but treating pigs as commodities to exploit, abuse and slaughter based on species alone. To learn more about speciesism I would recommend checking this out. I will also link to some more information about veganism since there seem to be a massive misunderstanding of what it is going on in this OP.

If I may add: Veganism does not suggest that humans and non-human animals should be treated the same. Humans and non-human animals have different interests and needs. Both, however, deserve basic moral consideration; that being the right to not be intentionally and needlessly harmed.
Baby otter first time in the water
Seems fitting.
hey. so, animals are extremely important, innocent beings and we, as humans, should protect them.
Definitely. We should use our powers to help those in need - never to harm. Animals are being needlessly harmed under our responsibility.
Controversial Opinion
But maybe chickens, pigs, and cows deserve to be…. *looks around anxiously, drops voice to a whisper* not murdered for our pleasure
What some people fail to realise (as demonstrated by the notes of this post) is that the majority of farmed animals are indeed killed for our pleasure; our taste pleasure, that is.
Cows have similar emotional range as dogs. They display boldness, shyness, fearfulness and even playfulness.
(Source)
Sadly, the majority of cows are killed (horribly) in their youths.
what are you doing to exempt yourself from paying taxes that go to animal products?
I can’t. No more than I can stop my taxes from building bombs or giving military gear to cops.
Does that mean I should do nothing? Should I become apathetic, or worse, shame people who are trying to make things better? Sit back and not raise a hand to stop the harmful actions I can control? What are you doing to make things better, anon?
In response to Anon: What the Animal Rights movement is doing, is speaking up against animal exploitation and making the public and governments aware of its inherently unethical nature. If people can change, then so can the law. This is no reason to be discouraged. It simply demonstrates how unsustainable industrial farming truly is.
Hey vegans just because plants aren’t sentient in the way humans and animals are doesn’t mean shit. They still have lives that should be valued, you’re not as nice as you think you are.
It most definitely matters whether plants are sentient or not. Sentience allows us (animals) to experience life subjectively through sensory processing. Without sensory processing, we would not be able to feel neither pleasure or pain, nor would we be aware of our own existences. Plants lack a nervous system, something which is required for sensory processing and thus sentience. They react to stimuli. They have no motivations, no wills and wants, and most importantly perhaps, no capability to suffer.
and also maybe stop being fucking stupid and look into why bees need us to take their honey also.
and also maybe stop bringing more bees into the world and then maybe they won’t be so dependant on us.
we need bees to survive and their numbers are decreasing at alarming rates so… maybe not?
Yes, wild honey bees are decreasing. Don’t be fooled. Domesticated honey bees are doing just fine, though. Because we keep breeding them. Because of the demand of honey.
You’re worried about the wrong kind of bees here, my friend.
It’s funny that you continue to care about the bees but won’t address that a vegan diet is in no way “cruelty free” because it relies on the exploitation of poc, mostly women, who are often doing what is basically slave labor but cool. Save the wild bees am I right.
I agree that a vegan diet isn’t 100% cruelty free and I never parade it out to be. Veganism is the least exploitative, because while we admit that we cannot be perfect, at least we are trying. That’s the entire point of veganism, by definition (and not the Google definition, either).
However, there are obvious flaws in your statement:
-Most of the crops picked by exploited POC that you’re using as your shield are fed to the livestock you eat (that the west eats in general). Soy, corn, grains, etc are the most picked crops and vegans only eat a small percentage of that. The higher the demand for animal products, the more exploitation of POC is required to pick these crops for livestock. Vegans also only make up such a small percentage of the population, we cannot eat nearly 60 billion animals worth of crops (since that’s how many animals are murdered every year). It’s impossible.
-Let’s not act like you non-vegans don’t eat those crops too. In fact, because of the ties to animal products that these crops have, y'all actually consume more of it indirectly than vegans do, directly.
-Slaughterhouses rely on the exploitation of POC too, and it’s gross, literally and figuratively. Most of them are underpaid immigrants, actually. Because of this, they’re less likely to have access to compensation for workplace injury (cause you know, slashing open an animal’s throat isn’t exactly safe sometimes). On top of that, these violent workplaces often create households of domestic violence. Workers are often desensitized to the violence they’re required to inflict on animals so they inflict it on their wives and/or children. Often times, the bigger the facility, the worst it gets. So yeah.
So yes, save the wild bees. Plant some wildflowers. Leave a bee bath, both in your front yard and your back yard. It’s the least we can do.
Ever heard of “The perfect solution fallacy”? Here is what it means; “The Perfect Solution Fallacy (also known as the ‘Nirvana Fallacy‘) is a false dichotomy that occurs when an argument assumes that a perfect solution to a problem exists; and that a proposed solution should be rejected because some part of the problem would still exist after it were implemented. In other words, that a course of action should be rejected because it is not perfect, even though it is the best option available.”
All these non-vegans attack vegans with their BS excuses by telling us “veganism isn’t perfect, so let’s continue with slaughter of billion innocent animals, support the most violent industry, and contribute to deforestation and polluting the planet because this solution isn’t perfect”…
well, let me tell you this dude; no solution is perfect as long as the majority of people create the problem. Nothing in this world is a separate issue. every system is connected. Every issue is connected to the other; sexism, racism, speciesism, poverty, etc. are not separate issues, and thanks to every non-vegan, racist, sexist, misogynist, capitalist supporter, we can’t really have a perfect solution until everyone is onboard!
So, yeah, veganism isn’t perfect because we’re still living in a corrupted system, but I still choose the less harmful solution over the violent problem!
Veganism is not perfect, but it is the very least we can do for ourselves, the animals and the planet. If you truly care about perfection, go vegan, and there’s a chance we might get there or at least we’ll get closer. To continue the monstrosity that is animal exploitation and the ethical and environmental consequences that come with it, is to actively move in the complete opposite direction of perfection.
To simplify:
Plantbased = A diet consisting of plants only.
Animal Rights movement = A social justice movement which seeks to abolish all forms of animal exploitation.
Veganism = A lifestyle which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.
