Urine research methods and diseases
Urine is a body fluid that the body doesn’t need. The kidneys are distracting the waste from the blood and fills it up inside the bladder. Eventually it will be urinated out of the body. This urine tells us much about our health. It can reveal diseases or help us find the cause of some complaints. There are kidney diseases, STDs, metabolic disease or infection in the urinary tract. If some problems occur to you, it is advised to consult your doctor. You could also deliver your urine directly for research.
What do they test?
There are multiple complaints and diseases and therefore multiple approaches.
The most carried out method is testing the urine with a dipstick or strip. The doctor or lab scientist will put the stick or strip into the urine and it reveals the color. The strip will be compared to a ladder of colors with different meanings. It shows the level of protein, sugar, nitrite, red and white blood cells.
Another common method is a microscopic examination of the urine sample. By performing this test a filled tube with urine is going to be centrifuged for a couple of minutes. The cells will drop down to the bottom and the residue will be further examined under a microscope.
The third one is performing a culture of the bacteria. Whenever there is an infection or a suspicion, the doctor will perform this test. With this test the doctor will perform research on the germs of which the urine contains and the effect of antibiotics to those germs. To find a result it could take a couple of days.
Last but not least. A test based on cytological examination. With this test the cells in the urine will be examined for malignancy.
The doctor needs to find the symptoms of your complaint. Based on that the doctor can go to the next step which is determining which test needs to be done. The first two tests will always be done for these complaints. The doctor can decide if further actions are needed.
Bacteria contamination
While creating a sample for the doctor or research lab, there needs to be thought of a few things. It is actually quite important to wash your genitals before urinating in the tube. It could be that other bacteria get into the tube which is making the urine invalid for research. To avoid such contamination it is also advised to use a specially made urine tube. They are available at the pharmacist or doctor. It is also possible to buy them online at webshops which are delivering them to your front door.
