There were a lot of things about Jungkook that you didn’t learn until you were official. Like the fact he rarely matches his socks unless they’re cool socks. Or that he prefers his pancakes pre-drizzled with syrup. Not necessarily bad things, just aspects the general public wouldn’t normally see. In fact, the worst “trait” you’ve learned about Jungkook in the past year is how easily distracted he can get. Nothing crazy, just tiny actions, like forgetting to eat for three hours because he refuses to leave his Wii until he can beat the guys in three rounds of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the Mushroom Kingdom stage. Strangely specific, but it’s Jungkook and you’ve long since learned he’s an enigma.

For a freshman, Jeon Jeongguk was a mountain of a boy. 

You’d noticed that the second he’d walked into the second-level composition class when his shoulders just barely cleared the door frame, thickly corded muscle hidden beneath the laughable coverage of a black t-shirt and faded jeans, and for a second time had stood still when he’d paused at the bottom of the stairs, surveying the classroom for a seat. You’d looked over your shoulder curiously, and for all the silence in the classroom you could hear the sound of at least ten couples breaking up over text and an almost deafening burst of sexual tension sweep through the nine rows of the small auditorium. 

You curled your nose, slightly repulsed at the wave of pheromones that began to dust the air like too-sweet perfume, and wished you could head back to your little apartment and fumigate your sinuses. Your nose started twitching, growing pink and more rounded in the outskirts of your sight, so you rubbed at it to stop the itching and forced back the impulse to shift forms. Most rabbit shifters get a bit antsy around more predatory shifters, but you’d managed to break out of your tiny, bunny-friendly town in Busan and make it to Seoul University in a class of over six thousand carnivores, and fuck if you’d let anyone intimidate you at this point.

When the smell finally started to get to you, you pulled your sweater over your nose and blinked away the tears prickling at the corners of your eyes, before jumping a foot in your seat when a textbook and notebook slammed onto the table next to you. 

Jeongguk at least had the decently to look slightly sheepish when he caught sight of your wide eyes and stiff back, muttering as he slouched into the seat, “Sorry, heavier than I thought.”

You stared at him for a second before giving a simple nod back, scooting your notebook and pencil case slightly closer to you. The tinkling of your many keychains catches his attention, dark eyes glancing over at the case and then narrowing slightly, like he’s annoyed at the sound. You huff slightly, forcing back the instinctual urge to hide at the appearance of a larger shifter, and play with the keychains as you wait for the professor to arrive to make a point.

You stiffened from your position by the stove, hand pausing for a moment in stirring the pasta before resuming its rhythm. “Are you going to go put your dick in her?” you asked bluntly, still on edge from the things you’d overheard the night before.

You could hear an amused noise echo in Jungkook’s throat from behind you. “No,” he answered.

You placed your spoon down on the counter, crossing your arms over your chest and turning to him with a suspicious look on your face. “Are you sure?” you asked.

Jungkook rolled his eyes before closing the distance between you. He gently turned you around, drawing you against him so your back was pressed to his chest. He propped his chin gently on your shoulder, looping his arms around your waist. “She’s not the woman I’m interested in making love to,” he told you softly, sending a shiver down your spine. You swallowed, letting yourself lean back into his embrace. “I just feel bad about what happened. I knew she’d be upset about us ending things but I didn’t think it’d be that bad.”

“Of course it’d be that bad,” you said. “She lost you.”

Jungkook didn’t even pause in washing his face. “Is she?”

Jeongguk threw the pillow across the darkened room, a crash sounded as all his deodorants and sunscreens came tumbling down from his dresser onto the floor, plastic pings and clatters accompanying his soft cursing. 

This was the third night in a row. 

Third night of no sleep whatsoever, no matter how many cups of camomile tea he drank before bed, or how much he danced and worked out to tire himself out, or how much asmr he listened to, nothing was working. Tonight, he had even popped a sleeping pill. He was absolutely against using these kind of drugs unless absolutely necessary, but he was desperate. Everytime he was at the edge of blissful oblivion, something would snap him back to consciousness. Whether it was house noises, or the hum of the fan, an annoying itch or a wayward thought or just… the image of your heavenly arms wrapped around him as you cradled him to sleep. 

He knew what he ought to do. He’d known you’d ruined good sleep for him for posterity the moment he’d woken up beside you three mornings prior. You’d been the little spoon, him the big. That’s not how Jeongguk liked his cuddles usually (he didn’t like cuddles period) but you had come to him seeking protection as part of the unsaid roommate loyalty and trust agreement and he had to oblige you.
