On November 23rd 2014, for two flights down a darkened Brooklyn (EAST NEW YORK) stairwell, Akai Gurley descended , mortally wounded by gunfire but apparently unaware that the single shot had come from a NYC police officer’s 9 millimeter weapon. (Officer PETER LIANG) The rookie officer shot Akai because he was “nervous”… But does that justify cold blooded murder?
A few paces down and fleeing the boom of gunfire, his girlfriend, Melissa Butler, turned when she no longer heard him behind her, according to an account provided by a senior police official who was briefed by investigators. Retracing her steps, she found Mr. Gurley, 28, near the fifth-floor landing and rushed to a family friend on the fourth floor of the housing project to call 911.
“My neighbor says her boyfriend has been shot,” the friend told the dispatcher, according to the police official, who had viewed the call logs. “Call the cops.”
Akai was later pronounced dead.
Im a 21 year old black man born and raised in EAST NEW YORK BROOKLYN. Akai was murdered 5 minutes away from where I live, in a housing development that my Grandmother happens to have lived in for over 20+ years and still does. That could have EASILY been ME walking up those stairs simply visiting my Grandma…Im sick, I don’t feel safe. Akai was unarmed and INNOCENT. He leaves behind a 2 year old that wonders why daddy’s gone. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!!! I REFUSE TO LET AKAIS STORY GO UNNOTICED, AKAIS TRIAL IS COMING UP SOON AND WE NEED AN INDICTMENT.
