so they don’t pay their musicians and they subsidize paying their writers with patreon as if they aren’t fucking publishing video games and books and are owned by Viz

I’m not gonna call you out directly but I need to respond to this, because no, this is not okay.
It was a few weeks ago that Roach mentioned on twitter he wasn’t paid for the Friendsim music. That should have been an enormous red flag for everyone. Now, the official continuation of Homestuck is relying on Patreon to pay its writers.
WP is not a small indie project at this point. They’ve been selling games for over a year now and they publish books. They are owned by Viz. Pretending they don’t have the start-up capital, like they just began this project right out of the gate, is a lie. It’s bullshit.
They are essentially having people subsidize their need to pay writers. They are passing that responsibility onto you. There is zero cause for this. They either A: should be paying their people themselves, or B: they lack the budget to run a project like this and thus should not have done it.
Understand that when we support people on Patreon, we are picking up the slack of a society that doesn’t pay creatives what they need to survive. It’s a bandaid over a systemic problem. And WP using it when they are backed by Viz is literally heinous and in my opinion inethical.
Again: support better creators.
WP is the new Chucklefish hotness, don’t contribute to that Patreon, I’m begging you.
