How to Win Friends and Influence People || Gideon & Remus ||September 30th, 2016 || Modern Muggle AU

His friends were driving Remus bloody mental. The phone hadn’t stopped buzzing during the entire lecture as text messages kept coming in through the group chat. It was probably Marlene and Sirius bickering again over something stupid and insignificant, with James sticking his nose in from time to time just to feed the fire. Really, by now Remus was fighting the urge to leave the classroom in search for his so called mates just to scream at them to shut the fuck up. It was an impractical, senseless urge of course, but he wanted to all the same.
He turned the phone so that screen was facing the surface of his desk, and tried once again to concentrate on what today’s lecture guest was saying, even though by now he was really just closing up his speech. It had been a fascinating lecture, to be honest. It had already been quite surprising when their teacher announced they’d be having a guest that was part of the high government of the country. Gideon Prewett had been a student at Oxford, receiving classes from Professor Dumbledore just as they did now. Now he was one of Minister Bagnold’s most trusted advisors. It was notorious indeed, considering the man was just in his thirties.
And if the man wasn’t already interesting enough, his lecture about government relations, including international cooperation and general government managing had Remus listening with an almost childish fascination. The mixture of anecdotes and stories, political theory, but most of all practice was something that had his mind swimming with possibilities. Not to mention questions. He’d had to write them down on the corner of his notebook or else he would’ve certainly forgotten.
Between the class lecture and his friends that seemed content to ignore the concept of silence, the young man wasn’t even aware of those ten minutes that were stolen from his lunch break. As his classmates hurried out of the room, eager to eat and gossip, Remus lingered, encouraged by Prewett’s offer to answer individual questions after class.
The buzzing of his phone suddenly became even more insistent, the argument probably reaching its highest point. Remus rolled his eyes and groaned to himself.
While he waited for Professor Dumbledore and Gideon Prewett to finish his conversation, Remus opened the chat group and finally poured out the anger and frustration towards his friends that had been building inside him since the beginning of the class:
“READ HERE. I DON’T CARE WHO IS AN ASSHOLE, WHO IS A BITCH AND WHO IS THE BLOODY QUEEN OF FUCKIN’ ENGLAND HERE. I’VE JUST HAD NEARLY TWO HOURS OF A LECTURE I REALLY WANTED TO PAY ATTENTION TO BUT I KEPT GETTING DISTRACTED BY YOUR PETTY LITTLE BRAWLS. GET OVER YOURSELVES, MATURE AND SHUT THE FUCK UP!”
That should do it. With a satisfied grin, he shoved the phone back inside his back. A different sound had caught his attention, a low grumble that came from somewhere beside him. Remus turned his head sharply and found himself looking straight into the eyes of the giant dog that accompanied Mr. Prewett. He felt his whole body tense slightly. The animal was huge. Huge and staring straight back at him, its mouth hanging slightly ajar. One snap of those jaws and Remus was sure his bones would’ve been reduced to splinters.
“He’s going to kill me. I’m going to die as some rabid dog’s lunch meal. Bloody hell, why are you not running you idiot!?”
The dog leaped forward…and pushed his big wet snout under the palm of Remus’s hand, licking it twice before nipping it playfully with its teeth, though not hard enough to hurt. The young man blinked in surprise at the creature’s wiggling tale (wiggling self would be more precise). The shocked expression was replaced by a faint, amused grin and Remus dared to pat the animal’s head, feeling stupid for having believed even for a second that it was going to hurt him. Dogs, for some reason, always ended up being quite fond of him.
The beast barked at him almost playfully, and pushed his nose inside Remus’s pockets, sniffing eagerly. Remus’s grin turned into a knowing smile as he struggled to push the dog off.
“Ah, you found my dirty little secret, didn’t you? Smart boy” he laughed, grabbing the chocolate bar he kept inside his pocket, certainly the object of the dog’s attention “I’m afraid I can’t share this with you, mate, unless you want to end up spending the night at the vet’s with a colossal stomach ache. You wouldn’t like that, would you boy?”
Gideon was a little surprised to find himself surrounded by students mere moments after finishing his lecture. His talk couldn’t have been all that exciting, could it? He hadn’t even prepared too much for it. Only made some notes on the major foreign issues they were currently dealing with and decided to wing it. He would have written down more notes but his brother had decided to drop in unexpectedly yesterday and crash at his place. They’d been talking until late and Gid never managed to prepare his lecture.
He could feel his phone vibrating in his pocket again. Dammit Fab, what was so important? His fingers were itching to check and make sure everyone was indeed alright. With this family you never knew. They were a dysfunctional mess, but a loveable one.
Gideon tried to answer the questions of his audience as best as he could without getting into too much detail. He still had to get back to Downing Street sometime today and he wanted to grab lunch before he got on the train back to London. The students were eager and attentive, more than he used to be at their age. Gideon smiled lightly, remembering his own days at Oxford and how much of a nuisance he found having to attend classes to be sometimes. He’d still enjoyed his time here and had learned a great deal, especially from Professor Dumbledore. But somehow this new generation seemed much more enthusiastic about their education. They also seemed much less entitled than he’d been.
As Gideon wrapped up his explanations he tried to subtly check his phone. 7 new text messages from his brother and one reminder of his assistant that he needed to be back in London by 3:30pm for a briefing and if he’d like a change of clothes before that. Gideon quickly confirmed before opening the conversation with Fab.

Gideon groaned but was secretly relieved that the only thing that was wrong was the apparent lack of food in his kitchen. The crowd was slowly dissipating so he took a moment to shoot a quick text back.
won’t be back before tonight. order a pizza?
When he looked back up he noticed a young, tall man standing in front of Ollie and eyeing the dog suspiciously. Gideon watched the scene carefully. He knew, Ollie would never seriously hurt anybody who wasn’t a threat to his master, but he’d been trained for a specific purpose and one of his many tasks as Gid’s service dog included crowd control. Gideon didn’t necessarily like strangers getting too close to him and sometimes it was just too much and he needed a break. Ollie sensed when that happened, and sprung into action, usually by just creating a barrier between Gideon any everybody else with his own body. But sometimes, when someone got a little too excited, he’d growl. And with a dog his size, a growl could be terrifying.
This time however, Ollie did something entirely unexpected: he leaped forward, and with a rather energetic shove of his head, demanded to be pet. Gideon was torn between amusement at the boy’s surprise and disgruntlement of his dog’s disobedience. Technically Ollie wasn’t supposed to interact with people unless Gideon gave the go-ahead, or he was ‘off duty’. Gid hoped that this would be a one time thing, otherwise he should probably contact his dog trainer.
“Oh no.” Gideon laughed and gently tapped the dog’s head to make him back off. “He most certainly doesn’t want that. And me neither. We both hate the vet’s, don’t we, Ollie?” Ollie looked up at Gideon and whined, tail between his legs as if he’d understood him. Their last trip to that dreaded place had left both man and beast traumatised.
Turning towards the boy in front of him Gideon gave him an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, he’s usually better behaved. Now. What can I do for you?”
