Open name, but for the sake of this ad, we’ll call him Scott. His FC is Scott Eastwood, but that’s open for discussion as well.

Scott’s anywhere between 26-29, and he’s been friends with Maggie since they were kids.  Their parents – both wealthy ranch owners; hers from Oregon, his from Northern California, had been trying to pair them up for a long while. They entered a courtship out of high school,  but Maggie’s independent spirit drove her to end the relationship before it got serious to pursue a life that she chose for herself. Nonetheless, they’re still good friends – especially now that he’s moved in after taking an offer from Maggie’s folks for some work around the ranch for the summer. He’s still very fond of Maggie, and has been since day 1, but he’s stubborn, insistent, and not accustomed to not getting what he wants. 

Maggie herself has been spending a lot of time with a ranch hand – Gilbert, the grandson of the ranch’s owner in tandem with Maggie’s parents, born out of wedlock, and dirt poor, and therefore not a good match – the real reason her parent’s called Scott to live with them for the summer. However, Scott and Gilbert get along great. They both enjoy drinking, fishing, and boating. Scott isn’t hesitant to hand over a few bucks when they go out, and Gilbert likes to make a joke about Scott’s seemingly endless riches compared to his own situation – though, they’re both hot-headed, which could prove to spark tensions once it becomes clear Scott’s there to “court” Maggie, urged by her parents.

A general look of confusion crossed her features when the boy asked his question, quick to dispel the little quip she had prepared especially for anyone who didn’t share her love of horses. In fact, for a moment she stood silent, genuinely dumbfounded— uncommon for her, of how little this boy seemed to know. 

“You been somewhere that they kept cows and horses together?” She asked, tone a measurable few notches higher. She was still very wary of the boy, cautious not to be quick to assume he knew nothing. After all, it could be an act— he could in all actuality be here to slowly take claim of all she and her brothers had known all there life. No, if anyone had a right to it, it was at least her. “You’re pulling my leg, surely…”

Caught. Well, he seemed to pass it off like it was a normal question. There was hardly a falter or halt in his step as he started to get going again -- once again kicking up dirt. “I maybe heard of places that do it,” he said with a shrug. 

In reality, Gilbert had no idea what he was talking about. He hadn’t even been close to a horse in his life. His mother spoke of them often -- she was as fond of them as Maggie seemed to be.

“So you just got the brothers? No sisters or anything?” He called back to her. She still seemed to be in revelry over the rain and the horses, while he was ready to get this tour over with, and hopefully avoid the horse stables all-together. Not to mention the chickens that didn’t seem to have a nice bone in their stupid little bodies. His youngest brother had already been chased by a few on his way to school, and they perched on Gilbert’s truck often, and were impossible to move without some serious convincing. At least they were acquainted.

“I love horses.” She corrected, turning almost immediately just to show how serious she was about the already clear statement. “Horses are my passion. I mean– have you ever been on one as it runs full speed down endless fields of grass, the sun beaming down on your back and burning on your scalp? There’s nothing like it!” she beamed, features gifted toward a soft smile as she imagined exactly what she’d said. “I’d ride horses into town if I didn’t get strange looks for it. Trust me, I’ve tried…”

“I don’t fuck with no horses,” he told her, in no uncertain terms -- but her passion was clearly very serious, and he took that with a dose of amusement as he kicked the dirt off of his boots. “I like boats. And fish. Horses kinda give me the heebie-jeebies.”

Gilbert couldn’t lie -- horses were freaky. But just so he knew where to steer clear -- “Where d’we keep them? Not in with the cows?” He was hoping he didn’t sound all too ignorant. He was certain when her father came out to teach him about tagging calves and such, he’d look ten times dumber, and he was prepared for that. The Fitzgerald folks didn’t think very much of him as it was -- his grandfather had seen to that.

“Oh, God, no—” She quickly cringed, nose wrinkled in displeasure. “We don’t chop ‘em up here, no. I wish we didn’t ship ‘em off at all, but it’s just how things work around here. I hate that it happens, but at least we can say we only send the ones that have been living a pretty good life, it’s not like we ship off babies or anything like that. It’s whatever the buyer wants. Sometimes they kill the poor things, sometimes they go off to greener pastures. There’s no real telling. You’d have to talk to my pop about the cows, that’s not my forte.” 

Maggie drew in a quick breath, letting the air calm before she would speak again. “I tend to the horses. The fields and the horses. None of that brute stuff, that’s my dad and my brothers.”

Pop. Of course she’d call her dad Pop. He could almost imagine her a few years earlier, asking to borrow his car and calling him “popsy” in that North-west Ranch twang, so she could drive into town with her friends and shop for prom dresses and whatever else they had the desire for. She probably picked up the tab the most. He could picture it all very clearly.

“Horses?” He groaned, though he tried to sound not entirely mortified. “You like horses, huh?”

Gilbert was definitely, hands down, more of a boat riding kind of guy. Horses had teeth. Big ugly yellow teeth, and big ugly hooves ready to kick his head in if he got too clumsy around them, and he was no graceful gazelle. He wasn’t sure if he was ready to risk it around the horses.
