Floral Decorum || Gill & Lyla
As much as Gill would have hated to admit, the combination of being surrounded by flowers and Lyla’s chipper demeanor had made him a bit less.. cranky. He’d always been annoyed by how bright and cheerful she always was, but when in the company of flowers, it only bolstered his mood.
He chose to drop the topic of his own demeanor in light of not bringing his mood down again. “Oh?” Gill asked when she remarked that the kind of flower he’d chose reminded her of him. “How so?” He asked, honestly curious.
He bent over to look at the flowers at her request, a warm smile on his face. “They’re perfect.” He replied, grinning at her. “How much will that be?” He asked, straightening back up and turning towards her.

Gill raised a brow at the man. “Excuse me?” He asked, a bit offended by the question. “I didn’t...” He started, trying to think how best to explain himself. “Actually, no. Just believe whatever you wish.” He continued after a moment, deciding that it was too much work to explain himself. Too weak to carry those books... He huffed. ...says the guy who crashed off of the library’s ladder. Ignoring the other man’s gaze, Gill went back to work, opening the books one by one and entering them into the system. It was slow work, but Gill had had much less interesting work to do before. At least while he waited for the computer to catch up with his typing, he could read the books he was cataloging.
One of which had honestly caught his attention, a book about gardening. He got caught in the book and it was a good fifteen minutes later before he realized what he’d been doing and the work he still needed to get done. He let out a soft sigh and put the book aside and continued working.
“So, Mr. Cinna. What do you do in your free time?” Gill asked, deciding to make conversation to fill the empty silence in the air. He’d already forgotten about the previous insult Cinna had flung his way.

Gill raised a brow at Cinna patting the machine, a bit perplexed by the gesture. It was a machine. Patting it like a child changed nothing. He narrowed his eyes at the screen as the personification of the machine continued.
With a long sigh, he nodded and clicked where he was told. The program booted up and the database appeared. He barely offered the blue ‘E’ a glance. He was well aware of what that particular thumbnail would do and where it would take him. He knew the wiring in this building was likely not as strong as in the City Hall and even just getting to a simple search engine would take ages and the noises alone would give him a larger headache than he cared to deal with.
“About as useless as City Hall has been, it seems.” Gill remarked rather sourly. Even he couldn’t tell if he was sassing Cinna or being honest. “No, you don’t need to show me.” He replied with another sigh and turned to the box under the returns slot. For a moment, he stared blankly at the small pile of books. At least he’d have a lot of time to read...
With a small huff, he pulled out the pile and placed it on the desk, creating a louder ‘bang’ than he’d intended. He blinked for a moment, and looked up for Cinna, expecting to be yelled at.
Floral Decorum || Gill & Lyla
Even the cold smile had faded at this point, replaced by an air of indifference. “Oh really?” He asked, raising a brow as if the idea intrigued him. “That’s... lovely.” He added after a moment. He’d be seeing a lot more of her... great.
He raised a brow again at her next comment. Professional? “Have I not always been professional?” He asked, tilting his head ever so slightly. “Hmm... I suppose as a child I wasn’t as tame as I am now...” He mused quietly before pushing the thought aside again.
He looked at the lilies, looking for wilting and smiled when he saw none. “Oh, no. The color doesn’t matter. Though...” He started, thinking of his apartment. “Let’s just go with the brilliant orange over there.” He told her, pointing. The bright color would add some life to his rather drab apartment.
He thought about how many he’d like for a moment before replying, “About a dozen. As for the accent...” He paused for a moment, looking around. “Ah, some white baby’s breathe would look lovely.” He told her with a uncharacteristically bright smile.

Gill chuckled lightly at the man’s response. It was obviously a sore subject. “Oh, I agree completely.” Gill replied with an amused grin. Gill had his fair share of sore subjects too, so he could relate. The smile faded as the man mentioned work again.
“Alas, I am not...” Gill replied, furrowing his brow again as he looked over at the library. He wasn’t exactly a handy-man, was he? “I can certainly do that.” He added after a pause and walked over to what he assumed to be the front desk and sat down. Desk work was what he knew best, after all.
He pulled out what he assumed to be the new cataloging system and started looking through it. “This is the new system?” He asked, flagging Cinna over. “And, where are these returned books?” He continued, blinking expectantly.

Floral Decorum || Gill & Lyla
“Oh.” Gill started, his smile fading slightly as his brain registered the girl before him. It wasn’t a secret that he seemed... disappointed. “I wasn’t aware you worked here, Lyla.” He continued, walking over to the counter. He wasn’t entirely impressed by her... dramatics but he could understand why she’d done it. She was likely bored out of her mind. Surely, she could have found something productive to do. But all the same, he wasn’t going to press it.
“It has indeed been a long time.” He started again, remembering his days in elementary school. He’d been a much happier child than he was an adult. He’d believed in fairy tales back then... He pushed the thought away and put a small smile on his face again, though much colder than before. “Hmm... How do your lilies look?” He asked, watching her face. “I don’t need them to ‘say’ anything persay...” He added after a pause. She probably assumed he was getting them for a lover... Foolish woman.
“I’ll be putting them in a small glass vase so I won’t need too many.” He added, still watching her face.

“I’ll compromise and call you Mr. Cinna.” Gill replied with a small sigh. He scoffed a bit at Cinna’s next comment. He was fully aware that the man wouldn’t treat him any different, a bit harder maybe, but certainly not any easier. He wasn’t aware of Cinna’s relationship with his father but from the sound of it, he hadn’t cared for him.
“City Hall wasn’t helping you fund this place?” Gill asked, raising a brow. “Surely for a wealth of knowledge such as this they would have helped with even a small portion...” He continued, looking around the place, his hands held neatly behind his back. He sighed and shook his head. His father probably hadn’t the same passion for this place as others.
A small smile appeared on his lips as he turned back to Cinna. “You’ve done a lovely job restoring it considering the lack of help from City Hall. On behalf of my late father, I’d like to thank you.” Gill told Cinna, bowing slightly to the older man. He chuckled again at Cinna’s last comment.
“Far from it. I hope to learn a great deal from you Cinna, both about this library and much more.” Gill replied.”Is there anything that needs to be done right now?” He asked, looking around again.

Considering he processed the paperwork himself, getting a job at the library was simple. He’d just had to get a few signature here, some favors there... It was only part-time, but still. He’d take every penny he could get currently. He was on his way to his first shift. He’d forgotten to tell Cinna about his new position when he left earlier after getting some paperwork from him.
He was opening the door to the library when he saw Cinna barreling towards him. He blinked, his brow raised as he watched the man crash rather spectacularly in front of him. He clapped sarcastically for a moment before replying, “No. I’m actually here to replace your assistant clerk.”
“He had... other duties he needed to tend to. You should understand.” Gill explained as if the missing assistant clerk were no big deal. “At least it works in your favor as I’ve worked here before. No need to train me, I assure you, Mr. De La Cruz.” He added after a pause. He walked over to the ladder Cinna had just crashed and raised a brow at the dent now on the side of the wooden ladder.
He turned back to Cinna, his brow still raised. “I trust that you won’t let your preconceived notions of my status as the former mayor’s son affect our working relationship. Please, treat me as you would any part-time employee.” He explained, sighing.
