Gillian Anderson is the reason I first started listening to punk music. The story of her dispute with the Fox network to receive equal pay as her costar, despite their reservations about her not being a “typical blonde bombshell”* and her sudden pregnancy, inspired me to always demand what I’m worth in my career. Her award-winning performance in The House of Mirth quite literally scared me into getting a savings account.  She got married twice, has had three children with two different men, runs countless charities, spends time with her fans, and refuses to be pigeonholed. This, and her choice of roles (feminist, strong, complicated, sexy) as well as her commitment to philanthropic work and her family, makes me think that if we try hard enough, we really can have it all. I forgot about her for nearly twenty years, and now that I’m all growns up I’m proud to say that she is the only celeb that has lived up to all my misguided, confused, flannel-and-daisy-print wearing rebellious expectations.  So here’s to my no 1. role model: thank you for Scully in 1994, thank you for Stella Gibson in 2014, and thank you for being a bright spark in a weird and fucked-up world. But most of all, thanks for these amazing, ridiculous 90s fashion choices.  *Who’s laughing now, Fox?

When most people enjoy sports, or hang around on astroturf-covered park spaces for the benefit of an undisclosed charity, they wear some sort of ill-fitting “athletic” apparel, along with sensible footwear that encourages agility, or at the very least, an approximation of stability.  Not Gillian Anderson. White platform mules, a mesh (?) sleeveless dress, white ball cap and, naturally, oval rose-tinted sunglasses are a killer choice for signing autographs and drinking frappucinos on a pleasant midsummer afternoon. I must say I really appreciate when a person stays true to form in terms of their sartorial commitments. Really demonstrates something about their character.

Hey guys! 1996 here. I don’t know what you were doing at the exact moment this picture was being taken, but I know I was probably skipping out of Calculus, on my way to 7-11, listening to Weezer in my friend’s older brother’s Volvo. 

What I was not doing was chilling in a grey velour-upholstered limousine in a flirty plaid casual blazer and sensible business pumps looking like a cheerful, redheaded, oval-glasses-wearing BOSS. The irony is that this looks suspiciously like Vancouver out the window there so who knows, maybe that’s us in the car.
