Day 3: Munich- Salzburg
Weißwurst, Birkenstock’s and Drizzle
Had to really force myself to get out of bed after my late night and long day of travel the day before… I went downstairs and found the breakfast room and ordered a cappuccino to accompany with my European style breakfast… I just love the way the Europeans put out the breakfast buffet - there’s always something I don’t recognize and have to try! This time it was what looked like a patty pan squash filled with herb cheese and garnished with black olive and parsley and that’s exactly what it was 😀 two caps later I was able to re-pack my bag and head out to do some exploring before my 2pm train...
Just a block down the street from my hotel was Marienplatz - where the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) is located. No sooner did I get there, it started to pour so I wasn’t able to complete my walking tour that I’d had in mind... since I hadn’t packed an umbrella I had to keep under cover and to some shopping 😬
(I took these pics as I walked to the opera the night before)
This is the rainy view 😬
Ludwig Beck is the main department store I guess, 5 floors of miscellaneous wares, including a top floor that is entirely music... cds(🤫) DVD’s, Blu-ray, Vinyl etc., all genres, like Tower Records in the day.... The fun thing was to see some rare euro recordings of Wagner... and vinyl of Jonas Kaufmann, Munich based opera divo...
Spotted a Birkenstock store as I dodged raindrops and had to duck in and see what they had... it would be rude not to patronize an absolute German classic.
Getting hungry.... I wanted to try the weißwurst (white sausage) as I kept seeing the signs in front of enticing deli looking shops... so I found the one with the longest line… (That usually means the food is good :-) You are served two sausages, one fresh pretzel and some grainy, slightly sweet, mustard and you eat at a waist high shelf about 6 inches deep elbow to elbow with other patrons… To my right was a teenager using earbuds, to my left was an 80-year-old man who I think told me he eats there every day! He might’ve said something completely different but I’m pretty sure that’s what he said :-)
I finished lunch and headed over to the Assam Church, known for its fabulously gaudy baroque decor... turns out that the ceiling is flat it’s just painted to look like a dome, the gold is not at all real and the marble is painted wood… I guess that’s the solution for Baroque when you’re broke. Get it?
Ok I’m punchy. Time to catch another train! So long Munich, hello Salzburg…!
