Yes, it's scary. But you're brave.
You still want? I still want.
HEATED RIVALRY | 1.06

I am a big defender of Shane not wanting to come out and one of the biggest reasons that I haven’t seen discussed much is how much worse it is to come out as a Gay Asian Bottom compared to coming out as a bisexual (white) man who is already regarded as a sex machine. Like Asian men are already overly feminized in the west. Shane’s general demeanor is subdued, he doesn’t drink or party often, and he abides by strict rules and a diet that already makes him an outsider. He doesn’t sleep around and has only has one public relationship with a woman under his belt, which ended very quickly. He’s the exact opposite of Ilya in all these ways and it puts him at a disadvantage. He has a “soft” image he spends his whole life actively opposing. His image is working against him; him being gay contributes to it and worsens it. Ilya’s image is working in his favor; being with a man is an anomaly OR further proof of his sexual prowess. And bc of Ilya’s well known history of sleeping around and generally aggressive attitude, it will be assumed he would be the top. Through a heteronormative lens, which is obviously the norm in hockey, that makes him the “man” in the relationship. If anything, his ability to “dominate” another man may bolster his image, make him even more of an “alpha male”. But being a bottom is seen as inherently demeaning and effeminate, thanks to misogyny, homophobia, and rape culture. The less bulky, quiet, shy man with a shocking lack of experience with woman is obviously the bottom (and this is even worse if they have the height and body differences canon to the books). Shane will be seen as weaker (and what could be worse than that in a contact sport like hockey). He’ll be viewed as the “woman” in the relationship, which is to say he will be viewed as inherently inferior. And draws further attention to the parts of him he’s tried to hide (aka autism symptoms) which will now be treated as further evidence of his sensitivity and otherness. Everything he does now is gay. But being with Shane is the only gay thing Ilya does. Without the threat of Russia, Shane has far more to lose from coming out imo. And his team’s reaction proves that. He deserves some grace.
a million memories. thank you for those.
look do whatever you want it’s your fic but also why twinkify shane when it’s so much more delicious to acknowledge him as being a big, strong man that could probably kill someone with his bare hands but also loves getting thrown around and hit hard by an equally strong man. Bro can take a hit, he’s trained to take it!

Hudson Williams! Heres a bunch of my favourite hair looks that I created for Shane Hollander.
everytime I think I'm done being upset that Shane coming out to his team happened off page I think of something else and I'm angry all over again
because everything about Shane in TLG makes so much sense if you understand that he came out to his team and it went BADLY.
Shane went from suggesting that if they had a charity together that it wouldn't be weird if they were seen out in public with each other - to being shocked that Ilya bought them tickets to a concert
Something that makes sense if Shane got extremely negative feedback to the news of the Foundation from his team.
Shane being so obsessed with food, his body's performance, and his need to outperform all make sense if you consider the fact that some of his teammates might have questioned his ability to lead or his focus if he was going to be "bringing that gay shit on the ice" or something like that.
Shane coming out to his team but then being terrified of the thought of Ilya coming out to his own team makes sense if his coming out was so bad, so deeply uncomfortable, that he both didn't want to risk Ilya going through the same and knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Montreal would not have his back if the Ilya of it all was revealed. (With the way Scott's teammates immediately asked if he was dating Ilya - it wouldn't be shocking to me if some people at Montreal said the same and the locker room reaction was RANCID)
If Shane trusted his teammates of a decade to support him enough to tell them - but was hit with a wave of disgust and disrespect in the locker room, on the ice, and especially in the showers - it would make absolute sense to me that he would put a complete stop to the idea of them coming out to their respective teams. That he would shove them both firmly back in the closet to protect them both.
It is egregious that we did not get that scene and that we only see how Hayden and JJ felt about it.
Hudson Williams, #1 Shane Understander
I think Shane was a character who, soon as I read him, made all the sense to me. I felt immediately a kinship and an ownership over Shane. I was like, “I need to be the only person to tell this story. I get it. I want to be the person to be Shane and I want to spend time with him.” [x]
