Modern AU with Gimli being invited by Aragorn to some ballet for a friend. He’s a super grump the whole walk there, he doesn’t want to go and is just intent on believing his evening is ruined. He gets there, loaded up on snacks and begrudgingly watches the dancers start performing, rolling his eyes the whole time. Until he sees something he wasn’t expecting. Until he sees Legolas. It’s subtle at first, but as the story goes on he finds himself at the edge of his seat. Aragorn and his date don’t seem to notice, but this is the first time Gimli finds himself so mesmerized. All too soon it’s intermission, and Gimli is at a loss for words. He excuses himself and the room is too loud for Aragorn to stop him in time to meet his friend in the show. Legolas strolls up, of course, and they discuss the show. He points out the empty seat that he knew was full earlier - which is a mess with sweets wrappers and etc - and asks why Aragorn insisted on them meeting this way when the guy couldn’t even be bothered to sit through the whole show. Just as the show is about to go on and Legolas has to return to the stage, Gimli returns. Aragorn doesn’t say anything, he’s just happy Gimli’s come back at this point, and they continue to watch. At the end of the show, Legolas rushes over to them with a beautiful bouquet of roses addressed to the “amazing blonde on stage” saying it’s the first time he’s received something like that and how he feels “like a real danseur” because of the gesture. Gimli tries to be gruff and doesn’t talk much, both embarrassed and excited that the man he found so awe inspiring had not only been Aragorn’s friend, but was also happy to have received the roses Gimli had delivered to his room. He’s afraid of what this possible friendship might bring, hopeful about being in his company, and scared out of his mind of the strange feelings this man is giving him.
