Anyone with preconceptions about the Ramblers should have come on the walk I went on yesterday with the Linlithgow group. 8hrs, 2 munros and a rugged, pathless walk-out :) I don’t mind saying I was feeling it afterwards ;-) Sadly my long-established ‘curse of Ben More’ returned once again, the hill clear all day except for the 15 minutes we were stood on top of it. But that didn’t matter. A fantastic walk with more fantastic people.

Linlithgow offer one of the most diverse walking programmes inRamblers Scotland with two or three walks of varying grades every Wednesday, and walks on both Saturdays and Sundays. Next weekend they’re off to the Ring of Stea: ll!http://linlithgowramblers.org.uk/site/scheduled-events/

A little different from the things I usually post, but I thought this might be helpful to some pet owners out there.

A few of these tips might seem pretty obvious, but I wanted to cover all the bases for those who might not have dealt with hot weather and small pets before.

I know some clever pet owners have come up with other tricks to cool their animals down, so it’s worth looking into extra solutions too. This is just supposed to be some starter’s tips.

On being a fat medical student, at the start of our metabolism module

We’re starting our “metabolism” module at med school this week, and I’m dreading it with every fibre of my being. You see, I am going to be a doctor, and I am fat.

I’m not the type of fat you feel after you’ve had a big lunch, and your usually flat belly is protesting against the waistband of your jeans. I’m the real kind. My BMI hovers a couple of points below “morbidly obese”.

I worry a lot about what people will think of me as a fat doctor. For the smartarses among you, of course I’ve tried to be non-fat, it goes without saying. The thing is though, bodies don’t really like weighing less all of a sudden and are pretty good at reversing things in the long run. Mostly my body settles back to the same size 18 shape eventually.

I am always aware of my fatness, but perhaps more so here at medical school. We are training to work with bodies, and mine is a type of body we warn our patients not to have. It is the first thing described in every list of ‘modifiable risk factors’. A colleague suggests “just don’t let yourself get too fat” as we talk about preventing a certain type of cancer. A final exam question asks us to list four poor health outcomes associated with obesity. I sit through lectures with slides that have sniggering titles like “how BIG is the problem?”

Until it’s 5 or 10 years later and you have two kids and your favorite person isn’t your favorite person anymore because you both still had so much growing up to do and now you are wildly different people. Marriage is so much work and neither of you had any idea what you were getting into because you didn’t have enough outside experience. You feel like you missed out on something but you’re not sure what.

As a happily married person with a child, I promise that 22 is a terrible time to get married for most people. If I had married who I was dating at 22 my life now would be TERRIBLE, even though for a spell our relationship was idyllic as described above. There is a time and a place to wake up alone and hungover, and it’s your early 20s.

Stay at the party because at 2am you might meet your real forever person.

I got married at 22 and will be celebrating my 16th anniversary this year. I’ll spare you the mushy stuff and just say that he’s my best friend, I love him with all my heart and I have no regrets.

Maybe the real lesson is that life is different for different people, and that’s okay.

Please, never smoke. Never even start smoking, if you are lucky enough to possess a pair of untouched, perfectly pink lungs.

It plagues you. When you’re a smoker, being outside isn’t enjoying nature; it’s an opportunity to smoke. Driving isn’t an escape; it’s getting in your car and always traveling to the same destination: reaching for your pack. It’s a social crutch and a motivational handicap.

And once you quit, it doesn’t go away. I’ve been almost completely smoke free for five years now, one year longer than I was a smoker, and I still crave a cigarette. Every day, I still crave a cigarette.

You only look cool smoking in your early 20s. After that, everyone judges you for not quitting once you graduated college. I’m serious, don’t romanticize this harmful habit; it’s unhealthy, and dangerous, and easy to avoid.
