A year after his death from cancer, a quartet of robed Buddhist monks hit Union Square in New York City for a breakdancing tribute to Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch. The spectacle was part of the city’s new annual MCA-Day on May 3rd, honoring the life of the rapper/activist who spent much of his life voicing support for Tibetan independence, including the launch of the Tibetan Freedom Concert in 1996.

This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a while.

I remember the day MCA died. I was working in Brooklyn for a film shoot, driving an equipment car around on errands and listening to satellite radio. They interrupted the program to announce MCA’s passing. For the rest of the day, Beastie Boys was booming from every radio. Complete strangers would holler at each other with love. It really was the passing of a bodhisattva.

A trio of white jewish rock rappers, I’ll never forget them. Something to smile about on this rainy thursday morning.
