Finally got to read platform decay (long library wait times, but so so worth it) and I have Thoughts. Because like. Freeing the SecUnits. Murderbot is so so hesitant to free other SecUnits. And I think it's because it spent so long being scared of itself. iirc, it wasn't sure if the murder rampage it did was something it wanted to do or something it was forced to do, and the governor module hack was just in case it was the latter, but it couldn't ever be sure. Not until Artificial Condition. But that's years (35000 hours, about 4 years) of being sure it was a killing machine. It literally named itself Murderbot. And that kind of thing leaves a mark on a person. And then when it did try and free other bots, the one that accepted (Tlacey's ComfortUnit) was one that it thought of as "not a threat", and the one that didn't (the CombatBot in I think Exit Strategy) was a massive threat and tried to kill it over that. So it spends all its time watching media wherein rogue SecUnits are Evil and Scary and About To Do A Murder, it thought that that was a possibility for itself for years, and it didn't have any examples of other bots that could Do Murders but also choose not to once freed

(Add on to that the fact that the company gave it a lot of mining installation assignments, where the humans were all miserable and enslaved and it was routinely shot at by its own clients and being unable to trust the other SecUnits in the slightest because they could be ordered to kill each other and all that fun trauma stuff)

And then Three is freed. It didn't even do that itself, 2.0 did that because without a bunch of traumatized organic tissue hanging around, it didn't have a problem with it. It didn't even keep its name secret, it's not going to have the same baggage around freeing bots that Murderbot does. And neither does Three. Three had friends, in SecUnits One and Two. Three has the helpme.file, which shows it a SecUnit helping people and being a good person. Three's experience with being free so far is being able to help people, being treated as a person, and having a great role model in Murderbot, a SecUnit that people like and are willing to risk their lives to save. Three hasn't had its hope and faith and trust that other bots can be good crushed again and again. Three is less experienced with being a person than Murderbot, but Murderbot is a massive cynic slowly crawling its way up into being less of a pessimist, whereas Three is already there in optimism and having a lovely time. So of course Three has no issues with freeing every SecUnit it passes by on the torus. And of course those SecUnits, who have Three as a role model now, and whatever files Three decides to give them as well, also don't have the same hangups as Murderbot

(Three being not as experienced really shows though, because Murderbot had to give the SecUnit on the torus extra codes to help it survive, things Three didn't give it presumably because it forgot it would need them)

It frees a SecUnit on the Hell Planet after it has a good proof of concept in Three. SecUnits can be freed without going on murder rampages, and when it tries it out for itself and frees one of the BE units, it's rewarded for that. So now it has proof of concept twice over. Three times, with the SecUnit in the torus. Probably more, even. The torus was all abuzz with news of Rogue SecUnits (!!) but there wasn't any news of them killing anyone. That tidbit is definitely in Murderbot's archive, but I don't think it'll examine that too much. I don't think it will think to, not until it has to. I'm very curious to see what will happen when it frees another one, what its thought process will be

The reason Murderbot is more realistic than Three is definitely due to the experiences it has gained during it's lifetime but also, I think, because it is straight up older.

Murderbot is an older bot compared to most other bots we have seen and it's organic tissue definitely had more time to develop compared to newer bots like Three.

the pain of seeing nona be raised by cam, pal, and pyrrha in a gentle, loving way and then having it contrasted by kiriona- who glibly says that her dad made her skin impenetrable and left speed holes in her body. the whiplash of spending a good portion of the book wondering if nona could maybe be gideon and/or harrow if given a proper warm upbringing, to then be faced with kiriona at her lowest, most bitter and (in her eyes) unloved self!!!!

Harrow is the broke homeschooled kid from an isolationist cult that was let out on mission and/or bargained her way into attending a university so she could bring knowledge and funding back to the community. All her clothes are second-, third- or fourth-hand and have been patched and mended to hell and back and are not visually distinctive enough to identifiably belong to any subculture. The only exception to this lack of visual distinctiveness are her Church Robes, which are Church Robes. The only new clothing she owns is, like, underwear, maybe.

She is covered from neck to wrist and ankle because if anyone saw she had a human body under there she would gouge their eyes out. Most of her clothes are home-dyed black because she did it in the bathtub, and they must be black to show she is in permanent mourning. Also because then it's less likely people will notice she wears the same shirt and skirt for three days straight.

She does still have piercings (she is the only one on the Ninth mentioned to have piercings, I do not believe those are sacramental and are fully a Harrow Thing) because she can argue it's holy mortification of the flesh. Otherwise, thinking about what she is wearing is a distraction from more important things, which are a) being Righteous and b) proving she is the smartest person in the room.

retreats back to the Ninth's rooms where -- KABLAM! -- she finds proof that her own necromancer has, you guessed it, betrayed her trust on multiple levels--

and then runs to the Sixth...

...who trust each other more than anything.

i have been fooled. i have been fooled by Gideon Nav's point of view. i should've known better, she had been isolated her whole life and her only companion was Harrow and we all know how that went. what does she know about normal and healthy relationships?

i knew that Camilla and Palamedes were codependent and weird about each other. but i assumed that was the norm? that it wasn't anything weird? no, apparently even Judith Deuteros, someone who barely interacted with them except for when she was arguing, noticed how bad it was. my god.

and no wonder Cam and Pal never commented on how weird Gideon and Harrow's relationship was (except for the beginning when Palamedes said they shouldn't separate). they fucking met their match. the final boss of codepency and the final boss of obsession. it's that damn spider man meme again.

Thinking really hard about Ianthe. She convinced her one-sided lesbian situationship to give her a new arm after she got dismembered by a saint. She and her twin sister love to dip their toes into incest sometimes but not in ways you’d expect. She also uses her magic to make herself look sickly so her sister can breast boobily.
