So, the original plan, way back before I'd even drafted anything, was that Amber was going to throw Gorrister's ring into the pit, and it was going to be probably the worst thing they did in the fic. I originally conceptualized the scene as a sort of "character development rock bottom". But, when I got to actually writing it, that direction no longer felt right. Very rarely do I have characters wrest control of the story from me.

Something I also like doing when writing Amber is to have the narrative drone about their wrath and all the violent things that they want to do, and then have their actions quietly contradict it. I want the actions to speak for themselves, and I also like this idea that, even though they are changing, they don't really know how to address it, and so the narrative doesn't quite know how to describe what they're feeling in moments like these. Amber doesn't know why they can't bring themself to do it, but the reader understands that, despite their rage, they're very slowly, very painfully, developing compassion.

in AMber AU, i wanted nimdok to retain his 'thing' of being somewhat mysterious and having a greater level of knowledge than ted (story, radio drama) or the player (game), but because the pov character is AM, i needed to go higher.

so, i decided he can see a little bit past the fourth wall. he is not aware that he's in a story, but he gets a little bit of knowledge directly from me, the author. he is not just AM's prophet, but mine.

this is why he's the only human character who uses they/them pronouns for amber.

Sitting in my little goblin cave clicking my nails together reading the comments on the last couple chapters thinking "hee hee hee, you all think it's going to stay this good" forgetting that the 'good' in question is that sometimes during the ceaseless torments there's kissing.
