The thing about Facebook memories (which I think is the single best feature) is that it celebrates the best versions of yourself while reminding you the heartbreaking days as well. I posted this 10 years ago, 6 days away from my father’s last breath. For 4 long weeks, I sat by my father’s bed at the St John’s hospital in Bangalore, at the burn recovery ward. He suffered third degree burns neck down when he was offering his daily prayers - the oil lamp must have tipped over or he must have tipped over on the lamp. The days leading up to his death was a roller coaster ride. From a blind faith in science and medicine, to hope for a miracle, to coming to terms with what was inevitable, to desiring the impeding to come sooner than latter. He left us when he was 78 - at 60, I still remember him beating me in a 100m sprint. It was one of my our most enjoyable outdoor activity and my most cherished memories as a teenager. He always beat me. He was also unbeatable with his diction, vocabulary and unflappable morality. Fire beat him. To all those who lost your parent in the recent past, happy Father’s Day! Your are them and if you have kids, they are them. It’s a manifestation in mysterious ways and that’s truly magical to celebrate. A week when we had a toddler returning to school after recovering from hand foot mouth only to catch a stomach bug that he quickly recovered and passed it on to us. Both of were down with fever, nausea and cramps all of Wednesday. Like champs we overcame it - hydration and warm cuddles. On Friday, this cuddle partner of mine wore a saree and platforms to a job that requires 8 hours of standing and persuading high school teenagers to learn. And this is how she returned home. Amongst a sea of whistleblowers, woke TikTok preachers @conetikay stands tall. P.S: just kidding she was just wearing this to ComicCon dressed as the new superhero that marvel wrote in because some of us have been asking for representation. Hissam Sadkhan Hameed, who goes by Sam, immigrated from Iraq a decade and half ago. He has a degree in Geographic Science from Baghdad University but chose to teach himself the art of haircuts while earning his degree. For over 5 years now, I have gotten my haircuts and beard trims from Sam. Every time I visit him, we bond over our somewhat similar cultures, stories from the 90s, Bollywood. This past visit, he recounted the day when Kuwait was invaded and how his class teachers casually told him that morning, that their country had a new state. Like most small business owners, this past year was challenging for him. But, each time I visited him, in the last 5 months, he exuded confidence and optimism about a better future ahead. Now on @netflix I saw this gem last year at @thenyff This is @chaitanya_tamhane ‘s second film. His first was #Court. I am excited about the films that this young auteur has yet to make. In full command of the grammar of cinema. Almost tempted to draw parallels with @xavierdolan and the early works of #satyajitray but will wait for his next one for a conclusive opinion. Good Cinema is a craft that challenges status quo and provides fresh perspective of milieus that we have given loose and often questionable terms like Midwest corn belt and Indian reservations. Fresh perspectives mean fresh brilliant eyes and delicate unraveling of characters and stories. In Chloe Zhao’s 3 films retrospective, a Beijing born young auteur, I found America(ns). It only took me a little over two decades after moving to America to accomplish that and how better than through her brilliant works. America as never seen before, ironically brought to you by a first gen immigrant. She is the visual equivalent of quintessentials American writers William Faulkner and Scott Fitzgerlad. Zhao’s latest work featuring the inimitable Frances Dormand transports you into a word that is rich and full of human might, resilience, our inherent kindness and the treachery of misfortunes.
