Happy #sharkweek!
Brave Every Day story time
Thank you, Brazos bookstore, for a splendid afternoon! Thank you to everyone who came! My favorite moments reading Brave Every Day (by Trudy Ludwig, pub. by Knopf) were when the kids laughed, gasped and cheered in the places I was hoping they would. Yay!
We also had a little drawing demo.
Signing some books for Martha, Rocket, Spike, Stradley, Leroy… loving these names. :)
Activity sheets and stickers for all!

Goldie’s Guide book release
Girllustrator Eliza Kinkz and author Clint McElroy led a highly-entertaining chat at Book People about their fabulous and hilarious new book Goldie’s Guide to Grandchilding.
Then we were treated to a lil’ demo to learn to draw Goldie!
And of course we lined up to be among the first to get signed copies!
Book releases--hooray!
We celebrated the release of Vanessa’s new book The Stack this past week at our cherished indie bookseller Book People. It was fun (and cozy) to hang out in our PJs...and validating to finally have an excuse to wear them in public!
Then afterward, Patty got Emma’s autograph on Emma’s new book, If This Bird Had Pockets -- an illustrated collection of new poems by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater. So many exciting things to celebrate!
We get together in any weather! Usually at Austin’s bakery and coffee shop Easy Tiger. In January we shared recent work and exciting news, blew off steam, and laughed hard as usual. So grateful for these Girlls!
It looks like Chicken wants to fly.
Hello! Happy Holidays! I’ve been on deadline for the second book in the Captain Cat series. While on said deadline, the first book, Captain Cat and the Pirate Lunch released, so Happy Book Birthday to Captain Cat.
I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. Here’s to more love, peace and art in 2022.
Process work for Friends Beyond Measure, my book for HarperCollins. Art buddies are so important; fellow Girllustrator Eliza Kinkz told me about some extra-chunky pencils she’d been using, so I got some of these Faber-Castell 9000 Jumbo Graphite Pencils, 6-8B! But I do use a Palomino Blackwing for tiny important details like eyes. – Lalena
Here’s another from the cut paper fish series.
Character designs in partial-rotation for consistency in my final drawings for upcoming book Friends Beyond Measure. Ana and Harwin! At top are the rough sketches. —Lalena
Marker and pencil drawings of Good Doggo, Bella.
Working on some characters... loving how this little girl turned out.
A page from the sketched dummy and color plan for my book. —Lalena

Thanks to the United States Post Office’s “Special Handling Guidelines,” several people shipped their babies through the mail. A bad idea, to be sure, but we kind of get it. ~ Illustration from a promo postcard. ~patrice
Little builder building. Illustration from Remarkably You by Pat Zietlow Miller. I’m building too! I have a new website under construction. There’s so much to learn using a new website builder. It was quite puzzling at first, but slowly the pieces are falling into place. Like my little builder, I will keep hammering away!
