clingy...
I love Sergeant Benton a lot and I really miss him in the series but I also love that The Doctor and the Brig associate good memories in UNIT and Benton together.
Like in Mawdryn Undead, when the Doctor is trying to see what the Brig remembers, Sergeant Benton is not only the first person he asks about, but the Brig has been keeping tabs on him. In Battlefield when reminiscing about UNIT, the Brig actually mentions Benton specifically.
In the extended universe too. In The Story of Martha, a group of UNIT soldier’s used Benton’s name as a code word to signal to the Doctor and the Doctor’s companions that they were friends who could help because they knew the Doctor would recognize it. In the short story ‘Lights Out’, the Twelfth Doctor says that Benton still makes the second best cup of coffee in the universe.
According to some of the audios, Benton, the Brig, and Mike Yates stayed friends after UNIT. Benton and Kate have a familiar enough relationship that she is comfortable to going to him for help and safety and he calls her ‘little Kate’. Also the Brig gave Benton ‘Bessie’ to look after. He wanted to take Dorris and Kate to Benton’s pub too when he got out of the hospital (implied Benton opened the pub when the Brig got sick) but sadly never made it.
I’m glad that even though Benton hasn’t appeared in the show for decades he is still well loved by his friends.
I love the different reasons for adoration of Doctor Who characters in the UNIT era.
People like the Brig because he's got a complicated relationship with the Doctor and is kind-of an arse but still fun to watch.
People like Liz Shaw because she's a super intelligent scientist who doesn't take any sexist nonsense from the idiots around her.
People like Jo Grant because she's empathetic and highly skilled in very specialised subjects.
People like Sarah Jane Smith because she's an ultra-competent journalist.
People like Mike Yates because he's a conflicted character with a redemption arc.
People like Harry Sullivan because he's a bit of a moron and completely out of his depth most of the time.
And Sergeant Benton? People like him because he's nice and kind. 😊
"Invasion of the Dinosaurs" is one of my favorite classic Who stories for many reasons: the follow-through on several themes and character points from "The Green Death," Sarah's skills as a journalist being put to excellent use to where she all but singlehandedly uncovers the conspiracy and convinces others it's a sham too, (mostly) misguided humans being the bad guys (rather than it turning out to be aliens - it's a refreshing change of pace), the Brigadier being the Brigadier, and much more.
And then there's this scene, which not only is my favorite scene of the story but also solidified Sergeant Benton as one of my top 10 classic Who characters:
Benton: "Right then, Doctor, you better get busy."
Doctor: "What?"
Benton: "You better start overpowering me, hadn't you? You know, a bit of your Venusian oojah?"
Doctor: "Thank you, Sergeant Benton."
Benton, you're a real one! I love you! 😄
I love that Jamie’s signature move seems to be clinging onto random people. (He’s pretty much only just met each of these individuals)
more x files studies bc I don't draw enough environment I think
i loved this scene from invasion of the dinosaurs the brigs glare at benton really ties this all together ^^
first ever guy to consent to venusian akkido <3
This week I've been appreciating Sergeant Benton from Doctor Who. He's now on the list of comfort characters 💖
fairly certain i havent posted these but goddamn put that thang down >:/
Holmes is always some sort of ace in my opinion, no matter how else you interpret his sexuality/relationships, and every single flavor of ace Holmes is so so important to me.
Aroace Holmes who never feels incomplete without romance because he found lifelong happiness and fulfillment with his best friend.
Demisexual Holmes who has never had sex before because he’s never been attracted to anyone, so when he’s suddenly attracted to Watson he has no idea what to do with those feelings.
Gay Ace Holmes who enjoys sex with Watson simply because he enjoys the intimacy of it and likes how happy it makes his partner.
Gay Ace sex repulsed Holmes who finds his own ways to show his Watson how much he loves him and never feels obligated to force himself into a sexual relationship because he’s found a partner who respects and understands him.
As someone on the ace spectrum who read these books as a kid, it’s so important to me that so many ace kids read Sherlock Holmes and immediately see themselves in him. Ace Holmes you will always be SO famous
"But it seems I've missed you. I don't know if I could stand to lose you again."
