The End of Your Love

Looking into the familiar eyes I had spent countless sunrises examining

the traces of sublimity in each stroke of green, blue and amber

Eyes as radiant and burning with content like the sun’s light that once soothed my burning cheeks with the tranquilizing brush of it’s tips

But looking at them now does not bring me the solace as it once did-

Only yearning and ache

For those eyes I no longer possess

No, those eyes will never seep into my gaze as the sun breaches from it’s slumber

My sun begins it’s descent into the depths of another’s dawn

Those eyes that were once my radiant sun are now only it’s melancholy sister

A fragment of warmth on a summer day

No more shall I relish in your warmth

For all that is left for me is the inhospitable frost of midnight

Susie Coleman from Wit (2001)

My character is a nurse named Susie from the movie “Wit”. I am charged with the care of a woman who has a untreatable case of ovarian cancer and have to tell her family that she has ordered a DNR, or “Do Not Resuscitate” order as if her heart stops beating, she does not want to be revived. I chose this character as I aspire to be a nurse practitioner and will have to experience these disheartening challenges.

Dear Family and Loved Ones to Ms. Metter,

With this letter, I regretfully enclose the details on your family member’s, Ms. Katherine Metter, wishes for her remaining treatment at Clades Hospital.

I would like to first inform you that the medical team of Clades Hospital has tirelessly exhausted all possible care plans as well as treatments for Katherine. She herself has been strong in her efforts with the multiple chemotherapy sessions, as well as every possible mixture of drug and treatment combination. Though we have been able to severely shrink the tumor in her left ovary, the cancer has began to spread to other places in her body. Upon us informing Ms. Metter on her condition she asked us to give her a DNR, or a “Do Not Resuscitate” order so that when her heart fails, we are legally unable to resuscitate her. She has asked me to write this letter to you to inform of her decision, and wishes for your understanding and support.

If you would like to visit Katherine to discuss this, she is available for visitation during 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day.

MRIs Scamming the Not-so Sick

How many times have you been referred to receive an MRI in your life? You may have been in a mild car accident once and went to the doctor for some slight neck pain and they immediately tell you to get an MRI scan, even though you most likely just have slight ship lash. Though the invention of the MRI has saved thousands of lives, it has also filled the pockets of doctors who prescribe their patients to use it. This can easily lead to a bias in doctors who want to make a little cash with patients that have nothing wrong with them. 

 Back in 1990, the Government Accountability Office found that Florida doctors ordered 3x as many MRIs, 2x as many CTs and 5x as many ultrasounds if they owed a piece of imaging service. Even though Congress has been attempting to cut down on these self-refferals, claiming they promote doctors to order unnecessary test and inflate health care costs, yet there are loopholes. Doctors are still able to refer patients to scanners/MRIs in their own building, and since time-shares are allowed, doctors are able to send patients during hours they own the machine.

 Looking at doctors who do not have any skin in the game, patients who they prescribe for an MRI only have 23% outcomes with no abnormalities compared to doctors who do receive profit have 42% patients with no abnormalities. This is an issues that must be made aware to the public as these costs are driving up the cost of healthcare and the bills of patients who may not

For newly fitness guru’s or athletes who are not very knowledgable in the world of nutrition and fitness, it it very easy to believe and follow many of the advertisements from major companies telling you what’s healthy. In hopes of losing weight, many newly accustomed fitness people look for ideas and information in places that are not very scholarly. Today, instagram fitness models are followed by thousands and are paid a lot of money to advertise products not backed up by science. Ranging from waist trainers to hunger suppressing lollipops, many of these products are not very helpful towards attaining any suspected goals. Yet, sadly due to the lack of a drive to research scientifically-backed information or tips many customers are unaware that these “magical” products don’t actually help. I created this meme in order to symbolize the mockery of “organic” and “non-GMO” protein powder since many of these companies will slap on these empty titles that don’t really mean much in order to catch the attention of customers who have been drilled with the fact that organic is better. This is also a mockery of the customers have little knowledge of the industry and believe things like gluten free, organic and vegan are much better for you and will automatically make you lose weight. More experienced fitness people understand just because something says low fat or a diet says you should cut out carbs, doesn’t necessarily means it true or you should follow it. In order to know what’s right from you, visiting a nutritionist, a professional training or even a doctor could put you on the right path to achieving you goal.

UF College of Health and Human Performance

The College of Health and Human performance is the college within the University of Florida designed to educate students on the human body and its capabilities. The page on Facebook is easy to navigate as all the pages are on the left-hand side of the page. These pages range from about the college, photos, videos, and upcoming events. At the top of the page is a large picture depicting the Vitruvian Man and the building where the college resides, Florida Gym. This image draws in interested viewers by making a connection with the viewers who are interested in the college, that interest being the human body.

Near the center of the opening screen and on the right-hand side of the page are reviews of the college and their contact information. This makes it very easy to see the credibility of the college and an easy, professional way to contact them. The page averages posts of about 2 a week. These posts range from news, recent events, and basic information of what is going on within the college.

The posts done by the college draw viewers in by adding pictures with people smiling. This indicates happiness and a sense of community. One post, for example, congratulates a specific student for receiving a scholarly award as well as graduating. This post draws viewers in due to multiple reasons. The picture within the post is a darker contrast to the background. The picture is of the graduation ceremony, specifically with the award-winning student on the big-screen. The post lets the viewer know that the college cares and supports its students.

The page does a great job drawing in a viewer and keeping them interested. The page has common postings with smiling pictures with current events within the college. The page is well organized keeping basic information at the top, keeping nothing confusing, and has a good layout with color images and posts that show interest within the college.

Dance Marathon at the University of Florida

Being a student at the University of Florida, it is hard to know every club and organization on campus since there are over a thousand. However, some are more vocal about what they do than others because they flyer in busy places on campus and run social media accounts. One of these organizations is Dance Marathon. Dance Marathon at the University of Florida is a 26.2-hour event that culminates an entire year of hard work in March. The event takes place at the O’Connell center each year and is open to the entire student body. The purpose of Dance Marathon is to raise money for the children that are treating by UF Shands Hospital through Children’s Miracle Network. At the event, it is about raising money, but more importantly it is about learning how every person involved can change the lives of the families and children treated at UF Shands. Every hour a Miracle Family will share their story to all the Dancers and guests at the event. Dancers are all UF students that volunteer to stand without sleep for the 26.2-hour event to help raise money and spread awareness for the cause. However, the event in March is not the only time that Dance Marathon does things. Throughout the school year, Dance Marathon holds weekly check ins to earn spirit points for your organization, local hospitality nights to raise money, and community events to allow UF students to get to know the Miracle Families and their stories. All of this is made possible by fifteen captain teams, emerging leaders, and the overall team. Without the hard work of these people, Dance Marathon at the University of Florida would not be possible. Just last year alone, Dance Marathon was able to raise just over three million dollars for Children’s Miracle Network and all of that money went straight to our very own UF Shands Hospital. This subculture on campus is dedicated to not only raising money for Children’s Miracle Network, but also giving all of the Miracle Families hope by knowing someone is fighting for them.

For my subculture analysis, I followed the University of Florida College of Nursing Facebook page in order to analyze the college’s showcasing of the many achievement’s of it’s students and alumna. The UF College of Nursing Facebook page is primarily used for things such as new fundraisers and charities the college is participating in, information of upcoming meetings for it’s primary outlet club, UFSNA, or other things like announcing new soon-to-be graduates of the program. Yet, one main characteristic of their page is posts stating the accomplishments made by their alumni. One accomplishment that stood out was the recent study published by an alumna working at Shands Hospital on the nutrition for premature infants.

When viewing the page you are easily able to find certain topics you are looking for. On the left hand side there are links that will direct you to events coming up, photos recently posted and anything else you need to learn about the college. If you have any other questions you are able to immediately direct message them with a “send message” link on top of the page as well as “other related pages” to the right hand side of the page. The page keeps their posts very concise and to the point with many graphics and simple instructions if the reader were to follow a link to another website. A reader can easily scan through the page to find out various amounts of information, or conveivcntly click on the link on the right side to go to the specific information or section they were looking for.

By keeping their posts short, to the point and filled with visually appealing graphics UF College of Nursing is able to give the reader all the information they need, while still keeping their attention. This is important as these techniques could help the page give out vital information such as due dates for applications or any other important matter.

Grey’s Anatomy: Sympathy for the Devil (5x02)

In this post I will review the ethical dilemma Dr. Meredith Grey, Dr. Bailey Young and Dr. Derek Grey had to face while proceeding with the decision whether or not to take a life to save one. In this episode, a convicted serial killer, William Dunn, scheduled to be executed in 5 days was brought into the hospital due to bleeding in his brain. At the same time there is a 10 year old boy in the pediatric unit in need of organs or else he will die within a week. Shockingly, both William Dunn and the boy are a match for organs and Dunn, wanting to save a life before he dies, asking the doctors not to operate on him so that he can give his organs to the boy. Yet, at the last second while he starts to hemorrhage, Dunn, in a sickly haze, changes his mind. This episode present a dilemma regarding patient capacity as well as organ transplant and the rights of prisoners on death row to make decisions about their healthcare.

In this case, the doctors are faced with the dilemma of assessing the patients capacity as he has a brain bleed and seems indecisive versus him asking them not to operate while he was coherent and aware. There is also a bioethical dilemma regarding justice, patient autonomy. At first, the patient is exerting his autonomy by asking the doctors not to operate and let him die, but then changes his mind. As doctors who took an oath of non-maleficence, they must respect his wishes and cause him no harm. This then leads into the issue of justice, as the doctors must question if it is fair to save a serial killer that will die in 5 days anyways over an innocent child. As doctors they must remind themselves of the Hippocratic Oath they took to become doctors, and that they must do everything under legal law to treat their patients, cause no harm, and to follow all patient request given while coherent.

Grey's Anatomy is set in a highly accredited Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle Washington. For it's characters, their main place of action along with work is on the floor as well as the surgical rooms of the hospital.
