It’s not every day that one gets a chance to be on set with a professional Makeup Artist and today was my lucky day.
I spent my whole day being with Ms. Carmel Rivadelo -Villongco, my makeup instructor at Australian College of Hair Design and Beauty. Being invited on set was not part of the makeup course but I am just so thankful for her generosity that she would let her students see what’s it like in the “real world” and here’s what I learned for the whole 16 hours of being with her…
The makeup station
The project was for a realty developer and we were there as early as 6am. It’s a place in Cavite where you get to experience the city but closer to nature. The crew, including the models were kind and approachable and I must say I felt so welcomed even if I had no clue what their name were.
First one on the makeup chair was the mommy model, Justine who was so intrigued by my naturally curly hair 🙂 she was kind and pretty – even more in person! included also in the photo was the hairstylist, Ms.Angielou who styles the fastest curls that I’ve ever seen haha!
The next one was the daddy model (forgot his name sorry!) who had tattoos on his arms and boy was I amazed when Ms.Carmel covered them completely! and would you believe that she didn’t use any color correctors at all? right that instance I’ve witnessed how flexible and resourceful a Makeup Artist should be that even without the “proper products”, you should still be able to deliver what the client expects.
The first half of the photo shoot was spent outdoors and yes, even with the scorching heat of the sun, we were there watching and standing by to see if the models needed to retouch. I did get to experience retouching one of the model’s makeup and yeah, I was a bit nervous haha 🙂 ’cause I was so scared that I might ruin the whole makeup! but because Ms.Carmel uses this A-M-A-Z-I-N-G foundation, whether under the heat of the sun or pouring rain your makeup will stand strong 🙂

so let me tell you about when it rained….
As expected it rained around noon time and it was not an ordinary one, the sky poured heavy rain but the crew decided to continue on with the pool shot. Below is the photo of the twins just before the downpour and I was so surprised that the kids didn’t complain at all and they looked so cute enjoying the inflatable while giving their best smile to the camera. We were all there standing and if it wasn’t for the roofs, we could’ve ended up soaked too 🙂 but still we were there watching and that’s proof the show always goes on.
There were a lot of walking and standing but never did I got tired maybe because I missed doing projects like this. As a Communication Arts graduate, I’ve had experiences being in productions, events and shoots like this was not new to me; I admit I really did miss being on back stage. I’m thankful that even as a budding college intern at a big publishing company I got exposed to the world of media and almost 10 years later, I’m here again pursuing a field that I’ve always loved but never knew how I can go about it.
I’m barely a month old in this whole makeup adventure and God has indeed blessed me greatly by giving me this opportunity.

My key take away? it is not enough that you love makeup, you should be passionate about it – craving every moment to become better and excellent that people will watch in awe by how you move and apply makeup with no fuss at all. Oh, and being super friendly with the people you’re working with is definitely a PLUS!
Thank you, Ms. Carmel for showing me what a Makeup Artist should be. I know I have a lot to learn and this is just a glimpse of the real deal but based on what I witnessed, I have become more driven and determined to pursue my dreams of being a Makeup Artist. I’m glad that you are there to guide me in this roller coaster ride 🙂

So, was waking up at 2am just to meet the 4am call time, all worth it? Yes and I don’t mind doing it again.
