can you imagine my suprise finding out that Annabelle Lee was the name of the first love the guy from Lolita had. The girl he claims ruined him, destroyed him and made him unnatural; the reason why he is so hated now.

lt says an awful lot about John Gaius that he calls Alecto “Annabelle Lee” when he turns her off.

I was always thinking of it like the Annabelle Lee from whichever poem Poe wrote, and (from memory) theres a line where it says something like ‘wherever she dreams, she dreams of me’ or maybe Poe’s fella is dreaming of her. Anyways, I always thought it being John’s vanity manifesting in assuming that every second she was ‘asleep’, she was dreaming of him. I feel like it could be a multi reference maybe???

It's definitely a reference to the Poe poem because John quotes part of it at one point in the book, but, whether or not it was intentional, knowing that about the significance of the name in Lolita sure ads another layer off fucked up to it all.

being so fr castration movie is like a masterpiece work on a lot of levels and not least of which is just how glaringly it gives examples of lingering, drawn out social dynamics with a stark focus on the social influences and dynamics it comments upon while primarily doing so through an awareness with the audience's familiarity on the subject matter. in a lot of ways it uses the same kind of filtering tactics that chan boards have historically used to self-select and reinforce cultural barriers but it does so purely through a person's personal discomfort with the subject material, while highlighting that discomfort as a central core tenant in its thematic throughline. its truly a masterwork of design intention and exploration of perspective.
