It was opened in 1899.[1] It was once a busy main route in and out of St Enoch Station but that terminus closed in 1966 and was demolished in 1977, and since then the bridge is only used for empty stock movements, as the bridge forms a key link between Glasgow Queen St and Glasgow Central. This Italianate building opened in 1867 as a Free Church School known as the Wellpark Institute. It has been suggested that it was designed by the architect James Thomson(1835-1905). The building had fallen into disrepair by the time this photograph was taken in the early 1970s and it was abandoned in 1987. Shettleston Hall: . Built 1922-25 by Glasgow Corporation this large town hall was largely destroyed by fire in the early hours of the 23rd May 2008. Following the fire the majority of the building was demolished leaving just the retained facade with heavy steel beams affixed to the front (east) elevation and a large steel frame to the rear providing support to the rmeianing structure. The site as a whole is fenced off. fThe building was constructed using a high quality red facing brick with ashlar extensively used for the doorway and around windows and as a top band on the building. Description The Anchor Line shipping company grew from small beginnings in tandem with the River Clyde shipbuilding industry as the Glasgow river was transformed. In the 19th century rapid industrialisation the Clyde changed from a shallow meandering river into one of the industrialised world's greatest ports and a hub of shipbuilding and marine engineering expertise. From the 1880s until the 1940s the company was famous for its sleek ships and the comfort it offered its passengers at a very affordable cost. While not as large or famous as Cunard or P & O, the Anchor Line built up a reputation for value and became well known for employing some of the finest marine artists of the day to create its beautiful posters. The Eastern District Hospital (usually known as Duke Street Hospital) was built as a 240 bed acute hospital by Glasgow Parish Council and opened in 1904. It has been suggested that the hospital contained the first psychiatric assessment wards to be incorporated in a Scottish general hospital. In 1930 it was transferred to Glasgow Corporation and in 1948 came into the National Health Service under the Board of Management for Glasgow Royal Infirmary. A new maternity unit was added in the 1940s and upgrading of facilities continued through the 1950s. A psychiatric out-patients department was opened in 1970. Duke Street was placed in the Eastern District of the Greater Glasgow Health Board in 1974. In 1977 the maternity unit was transferred to the new Rutherglen Maternity Hospital. Thereafter the hospital became a geriatric unit.
