Happy Halloween 2014 from Glauser Williams Orthodontics!
Cervical & High Pull Headgear. These types of headgear are typically used to correct an excessive horizontal overbite (or overjet) in children, by holding back the growth of the upper jaw.
They can also be used for adults who need help maintaining a proper bite and correct tooth spacing after tooth extraction. Generally, these types of headgear are designed to be worn from 12-14 hours each day.
Cervical-Pull Headgear. This appliance has a U- shaped wire that attaches to the bands on your back teeth, and a strap that is worn behind your neck.
High-Pull Headgear. This appliance has a U- shaped wire that attaches to the bands on your back teeth, but has a strap that goes behind and over the head.
The History of Orthodontics. When were the First Braces? According to scholars and historians, braces date back to ancient times. Around 400-300 BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle contemplated ways to straighten teeth and fix various dental conditions. Archaeologists have discovered numerous mummified ancient individuals with what appear to be metal bands wrapped around their teeth!

October is National Dental Hygiene Month
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends you visit your Dentist/Dental Hygienist for a cleaning and thorough oral exam twice a year. With October being National Dental Hygiene month, it’s a good reminder to make an appointment to have a regular check-up and cleaning if it’s been 6 months or more since your last one.
Your Dentist/Dental Hygienist can inform you about oral conditions that can affect your mouth and even your overall health. Bacterial infections of the mouth can easily spread through the body and contribute to other health problems. Prevention is key to keeping your mouth feeling healthy!
If you are "due" for your regular check-up and cleaning, be sure to call your family dentist as soon as possible to schedule your appointment! :)
Bluegrass Appliance
The Bluegrass Appliance is made for children under 6 years of age that are finger or thumb sucking.
This appliance has a ‘roller’ that prevents the finger or thumb from resting against the palate, or the roof of the mouth and is worn until the habit has stopped.
Orthodontic Appliance - Tongue Crib
A Tongue Crib is a fixed orthodontic appliance used to help a patient stop habits or undesirable tongue forces exerted on the teeth and bone that supports the teeth.
This appliance can be used in any patient with a swallow pattern or finger habit after the age of four and usually remains fixed in the mouth for four to six months.
What is Malocclusion?
Malocclusion is the term used in orthodontics to describe teeth that do not fit together properly. From Latin, the term means "bad bite".
The Three Types of Malocclusion are:
Class I - The bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.
Class II - Retrognathism or overbite, occurs when the upper jaw and teeth severely overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.
Class III - Prognathism or underbite, occurs when the lower jaw protrudes or juts forward, causing the lower jaw and teeth to overlap the upper jaw and teeth.

What is the Nance Appliance? The Nance is a fixed (non-removable) appliance that is cemented to the upper first molars connected by a wire containing a piece of acrylic (plastic) in the center of the wire, which fits against the roof of the mouth. The Nance acts as a space maintainer to keep the molars from drifting forward and to prevent them from blocking the space where the permanent teeth will eventually erupt. It can also be used to slightly expand or rotate the upper molars.
What is the Lower Lingual Holding Arch (LLHA)? The LLHA is a fixed (non-removable) appliance that is cemented to the lower first molars connected by a wire that runs along the inside of the lower teeth. The LLHA acts as a space maintainer to keep the molars from drifting forward and to prevent them from blocking the space where the permanent teeth will eventually erupt.
Dental Emergency - Knocked Out Permanent Tooth For a knocked-out permanent tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it in between your cheek and gums, in milk, or use a tooth preservation product. Then, get to your dentist right away! You only have about 30 minutes for the best possible outcome and there's still hope within the first hour.
