a parenting lesson in gratitude

teaching our kids about gratitude is extremely important, and it helps our kids to develop empathy as well. i like to use "the shoemaker and the elves" story to illustrate this point, because in the story it would've been incredibly easy for the shoemaker to just stay quiet and continue to have the barely-clothed elves to continue to make his shoes (and no there's no actual reason why the elves are making shoes for him, they just are). but he didn't. he stood up and made them clothes with his wife as a way of showing his appreciation.

that's the lesson our kids need: noticing people who help us, and finding ways to honor them. even something as small as a simple "thank you" does it as well.
