thats how they get you. by being sneaky bastards.
“You look a mess.”
“Been in the Crucible.”
“Like, all day?”
“Pretty much all day, day before yesterday.”
“…What? And you haven’t cleaned up.”
“Nope.”
“Well, uh… you hear what’s been going on?”
“Yeah. That’s why I was in the Crucible.”
“Oh.”
(Loquitor IV w/ Maroon Moon)
The moment we heard “No… No no no no… Something’s wrong!” We should have then understood that he never wanted any of this to happen. He was trying to resist, somewhere in there. His strings were pulled and his madness settled in slowly over time. In the end, we were a murderer as much as he. But then again, isn’t that what Guardian’s do? Kill? Even our Ghost left foreboding comments and questions. Even he believed “Not like this.”
Perhaps we Guardians are not as saintly and bright as we once believed….
Honestly, as soon as we got in the warpath, hunting down Barons like it was Kill Bill or something, I was beyond any delusion of being a white hat. At best we’re running conga lines in the deep gray. And the thing is: you cannot tell a revenge story and keep the protagonists hands clean.
Now, do I think Uldren Sov deserved to die? Yes. I think so. His killing of Cayde-6 was unjustified even within the parameters of the prison break. Uldren had the gun, he had the Barons, he could’ve walked away. He did not.
I take extreme issue to the idea that Uldren is somehow morally on par with our Guardian at the height of their revenge spree. It’s explicitly said that Uldren killed the Awoken that bowed to him and hoped he would lead them. The Voice of Riven encourages him to essentially commit genocide on the Reefborn Awoken, and judging by the bodies on the floor, he’s already begun. Was he being seduced by an Ahamkara? Yes. But he still had to make the choice to follow through with the Ahamkara’s whispers, because without Uldren acting out these atrocities, the Ahamkara is without an instrument.
At the end of the day, our Guardian is not a saint. Uldren Sov is not a martyr. Light and Dark are just two sides of one paracausal coin. And while we think we know which side we’re on, we’ve increasingly been treading upon thinner and thinner ice.
A Thin Line, if you will.
(completely unsolicited discourse, but this got the ball rolling in my head and I wanted to write something up. cheers.)
You make a good point
But then reading the lore you realize that without his sister Uldren had considered suicide. Without Mara he had no will of his own to live. After the battle of Saturn is when it all began, the darkness slowly seeping into his mind and twisting his thoughts, maddening him. It manipulated him using the only one person and image who could convince him to do anything out of love and desperation. In the end he was only trying to bring his twin soul back. I’m not saying he’s without fault. Had he gone down and died in a true battle from wounds it would have been one thing, but the way it all went down was just very bitter.
Yes, Cayde deserved to be avenged… But my point is that Uldren was a victim as well. He’s not without fault or sin in his, but his mind was maliable to Riven’s will, especially when it came to Mara. He had sworn his entire existence to serve her and be there for her and love her. Losing her broke him so badly, he would not even get out of bed for hours stated in the lore, and even messed himself up on ether.
Of course he would have done anything if she told him to. And Mara, however unphased as she seem is not particularly happy that we killed him if you stick around to hear some of her lines.
It’s all just terribly tragic. Without Riven’s torment and influence Uldren would never have done such a thing. He used to be full of spirit, drive, and adventure. He and Petra used to be close. She knew something was wrong with him when he surrendered himself.
In the end I know he had to die. Locking him up would have maddened him further and the damage Riven had done I imagine was irreversible, and perhaps not even Mara herself could reverse it. The guilt of slaughtering his own people would have been too much to comprehend. Knowing everything he did was not in fact for her would have been too much.
I just wish it didn’t happen this way until first place. We waited years, YEARS, for the Sov twins to return. Only to be given a deeper look into them both, only to come to love Uldren deeper, and have him taken from us in one fell swoop. It’s left me with a hollow feeling. Blah, I’m done ranting now.
In the end, the takeaway of the story is like pretty much all revenge stories. You feel good in the moment, you might even feel good after. But eventually you'll have to confront what you did in pursuit of vengeance, be that in physical retribution or emotional guilt.
And considering how we seem to be cutting deals with shady characters left and right now?
Heh. I like where this story's headed.
The moment we heard “No… No no no no… Something’s wrong!” We should have then understood that he never wanted any of this to happen. He was trying to resist, somewhere in there. Slytherin is the best house no one can tell me otherwise💚🐍
Tru dat
Nah, as a fellow Slytherin, we might be awesome but Hufflepuff is the best house.
I can’t even explain to you how wrong this is
Obviously you can’t; it isn’t wrong.
Weak. Didn’t change my mind at all
Sounds like a Puff pretending to be a Slytherin.
As a Slytherin, I cannot allow this sacrilege to stand. Slytherin is the best house. Without exception.
But there can be ties I guess
‘Twas the Night Before-saken
’Twas the night Before-saken,
When all through the land,
Dreamed hype-stricken Guardians
Of avenging Last Stands;
The Crow’s sneering face both taunted and jeered
And many a Risen his death volunteered.
Their Year 1 goods were all stored in collections
While visions of god rolls piqued their affections;
And new perks for armor and sweet mods for guns
Inspired violence-tinged reveries of hunting down Barons;
But upon r/DTG there arose such a clatter,
And we all knew at once just what was the matter.
Away to their keyboards they’d raced in a flash,
To muck up our forums with ill-reasoned backlash;
As soon as the meta shifted they came,
And they ranted, and posted, and their complaints were the same:
“Nerf Shotguns! Nerf Sleeper! Nerf all Shoulder Charges!
Does no-one remember grenade spam at large?
To the trash heap of history they all should be sent,
And any new patch notes must seek my assent!”
And though we respected their deep-rooted fears (for Felwinter’s Lie had left us in tears),
We tried to remember the patch wasn’t here;
That soon, join-in-progress would be added to Gambit,
That fine-tuning damage was outside our ambit.
With well-worded posts their fears we assuaged,
And our thoughts turned instead to what the Drifter had caged:
A type of Darkness, perhaps? The Deepness made real?
Please, oh please, let the story reveal
At least some of the tidbits that to us were hinted
When the plot-line of Destiny 1 first was printed.
Give us dragons and queens and sisters of Oryx!
Give us Exos and Sorrows and Fallen named Variks!
We want Tex Mechanica with full-auto triggers,
And for the love of the Traveler, please buff Gunslingers!
(If two knives you’ll deny us - and their lack we still mourn -
Then at the least let our tripmines create unicorns).
But no matter the Guardian; Warlock, Hunter, or Titan,
We all knew that, somewhere, an Exo’s face brightened
At the thought of the treasure that would soon be hoarded,
Be it weapons or fragments or titles assorted.
His death we’d avenge, he knew it quite clearly,
And that smug bastard Uldren would pay for it dearly.
We’d hunt him sans merci, our smiles like blades;
We’d have our revenge, and we’d have it in spades.
Cayde knew we were good for it; that’s why his glimmer
Had always been put down on us as the winners.
And so without fear he went to his rest,
Safe in the knowledge we’d pass this next test,
That we’d conquer the Reef, that we’d plunder the place,
And he’d add it to his list of stories for Ace;
A little inflated - all true, he would swear! -
But every tall tale needs some inspiring flair.
His lessons we’d learned over the course of four years,
And his glories we’d sing throughout all the spheres;
The finest of all of us! No Hunter was better!
You’d never meet a more charming debtor!
We would all miss him keenly, but somehow we knew
That our favorite Exo would bid us adieu
In the best way he could, with a wit sharp as knives,
And a fine comeback worthy of all six of his lives.
As we all fell asleep, or danced, or emoted,
Cayde-6’s last words through all of our brains still floated;
When at last we found Uldren, when he stared down the barrel,
We’d savor the chance to sing one more carol,
We’d pack in the Prince with the best of brain twisters,
And the last words he’d hear would be:
HOW’S YOUR SISTER?
“Wonder if any of my old stashes are still… Nah.”
“Hm?”
“Oh nothin’. Just thinking about things I might’a left out there.”
“You know I’ve tracked down every box on every last map you’ve handed out.”
“Yeah, see, thing is I didn’t mark every single thing on a map. Would you? Of course not. So I think there might still be a few out there.”
“But you’re not sure?”
“Well, who’s ever sure, really, about anything, I mean…”
“You’re not sure because you didn’t mark a map—”
“Yeah, but—”
“—and didn’t make any notes.”
“Don’t you take that tone with me.”
“C’mon, boss.”
“Ah, I know, I know. Unprofessional. But you gotta remember, this stuff, mostly I hid it out there before my, uh, professional career. Didn’t always have secure places to keep notes and maps and clues. Some things, just had to remember.”
“OK, but then you forgot.”
“Heh, yeah. Y’know, I feel alright about it, though.”
“How’s that?”
“’Cause I know if it’s out there, somewhere, wherever… you’ll find it.”
Mr. Cayde... please don't go...
reblog to always have enough money to eat
“It’s not going to bite.”
“It has a literal head, with actual fangs.”
“Ornamental.”
“It’s growing spines.”
“Decorative.”
“It is straight up seething and glowing with ontomorphic corruption, AND you’re telling me it sometimes seems to reload itself with bullets produced apparently out of thin air.”
“Somehow I’m not worried about free bullets.”
“And you’re not worried that you don’t find this obviously very worrisome object at all worrying?”
“It’s just a gun. Taken from our enemies, now to turn upon them. What they fed to give form shall overcome their own shape. Aiat.”
“…What did you just say?”

I just spent three hours planning my wedding cake... Now all I need is someone to get married to. (I am a Lonely Bean)
Good plan, but may I propose a possibly better one?Now hear me out here…Getting married……. just means you get less cake. I mean,, you just made a glorious cake I assume…. Would be a shame if. someone tried taking some of it…..
Just sayin’ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯—Zero (the Ravenclaw)
I dunno, cake is a small price to quench the loneliness in our hearts.
Ravenclaw: *sarcastically* Well, aren't you sugar and spice and everything nice!
Gryffindor: Well, aren't you rudeness and sarcasm and... umm...
Ravenclaw: No, you go on. If you find something that rhymes with sarcasm and makes sense, I'll admit that we're friends.
Rudeness and sarcasm and all sorts of narcissism.
Destiny fan that knows nothing about the lore: Can’t Cayde just reboot?

If you can’t donate, please share this post! Everything and anything helps. Thank you so, so much for reading this.

I've come to the conclusion that if they somehow bring Cayde back with a plot contrivance, I'm done with Destiny.
It'll just be the final nail in the coffin of Destiny's stagnant storyline. There are no stakes to be had here, no matter how they try to grab my attention with more world-ending bosses.
