much like the rest of the unfortunate cases of the British colonies, Canada was taken from his original family when he was around 7 years old. On the boat back to Europe, he received two horrible injuries that damaged him for the rest of his life.
1 was a damaging head injury from falling down the boat stairs during a sea storm. This incident was enough to knock him out for the rest of the ride home. And when he did wake up, his personality had completely changed. From a normal, chipper kid, to very monotone and emotionally distant.
2 was another time he fell down. This time, right onto a jagged rusty nail, getting him right in the left eye. That’s the eye that was hidden under an eyepatch (the shield of his flag) when he was younger.
when living with Britain for the first few years, he absolutely refused to speak any English at all. BUT, he did learn to speak French from France. France was the favoured parent, since she was more patient with him and America. Still wasn’t parent of the year but it was sort of a case of House on fire vs mouldy sandwich.
Remember that head injury I mentioned before? Well the emotional distance came in handy during the First World War. That’s why he performed so many heinous attacks. He had absolutely no mercy in his body.
In modern times, between him and America, Canada is more in touch with his native culture. That’s why he keeps his hair long. (Much to Britains disgust)
Also yes he smokes weed he says it was prescribed by his therapist. (He does not have a therapist)
Yk how in the old days of the fandom ppl drew Countries with white eyes for some reason? I’ve managed to incorporate that into my head cannon!
When a country gets extremely angry or upset, their eyes turn completely bright white. This also means they go temporarily blind! Meaning that if you’re in their way, they can’t tell you apart from what they’re trying to kill. Unless you tell them but they probably won’t listen.
Now my question is how their eyes turn. Would their pupils roll into the back of their heads like sharks, or do they blink away like magic

So as I said in the Australia HC post, Britain had an orphanage built specifically for young countries that he kidnapped ACQUIRED THROUGH FAIR AND LEGAL METHODS. He was the resident millionaire politician whatever of the time so he was the orphanages main sponsor..and manager and architect designer and rule enforcement and
At some point, Can, Ame, Aussie, and NZ, all spent time in that orphanage. Short or long.
Britain would often do surprise visits to the orphanage, mostly just checking in to see if any of the kids showed any major potential.
“Potential” could mean anything from “has enough leadership qualities” (Like America) to “their land has a lot of space for agriculture and the kid has no relatives to fight back.” (Like Australia)
Any of the kids that showed any potential would immediately get “upgraded” to live with Britain. It really wasn’t much of an upgrade because their bedroom was basically a mini orphanage and Britains maids were ordered to serve them a healthy meal of gruel.
I haven’t really fleshed out this part of the HC yet, but I like to think that Other countries would “adopt” the young colonies from the orphanage as well. (Mind you I haven’t done much research here so bare with me) for example, The Netherlands adopting South Africa.

Australia isn’t directly related to any of his “brothers”. Him and New Zealand MAYYY be distantly related by like 10 generations. But they’d be so distant that no DNA test could confirm it.
His REAL parents represented the First Nations tribes. Nobody knows which tribe either of them were, cause Australia wasn’t old enough to learn their real names when they died. Same with his direct sister.
His Sister, in modern times, represents the Dharawal people, who are directly from Botany Bay, which is where Britain first landed in the country.
When he was barely even like 6 (in country years), Australia came across the first British fleet a few days after they had landed. That’s when Britain found him. And as Britain does when he sees child countries, immediately decided to KIDNAP adopt him.
In the initial struggle, that’s when Australias mother died. She’d attempted to get her son back to safety, and received a fatal bullet wound to the chest. Which this poor toddler had to witness and bear for the rest of his life.
His father died not long after, in a similar situation. Only he was defending Djurumin (Australias sister), and had luckily succeeded.
Australia spent the first five years in London in a sort of “Country Orphanage” that Britain sponsored. He lived with a bunch of other colonies, including New Zealand.
The conditions there were actually terrible, and Australia came scarily close to dying of a flu that he wasn’t immunised against since he hadn’t lived there his whole life.
Britain eventually decided to take them both to live with him, and Canada. America was in the middle of gaining independence at this time, so he was being bounced from Frances home to Britains.
the conditions there weren’t much better. All three (sometimes four) of them shared one room with two rickety old beds. They weren’t allowed to read anything Britain didn’t approve, and any time any of them spoke their native language, it was a cane to the wrist.
It was only around the 1900’s that Australia was able to go back to his own land, but everything was already fucked up beyond belief by then. And he still was heavily under Britains rules. He wasn’t allowed to do the work he wanted to do. Instead, he was placed in charge of a few coal mining companies until the First World War.
And even then he wasn’t allowed to fight until him and New Zealand hassled Britain into letting them into the army.
And of course, once he had proved that he knew how to hold a gun without shooting himself, he didn’t have a choice but to fight in the Second World War. Luckily- he had better luck in battles there than he did in the first.
It was only sorta after the second war that Britain finally let him do what he wanted, and he immediately got a job working with livestock on a farm. That’s where he learned about how much he liked animals, which inspired him to study veterinary medicine during the 60’s to 70’s.
Australia massively blames himself for his true mothers death, and unfortunately so does Djurumin. And the fact that her and Australia ended up having some massive tensions in later years really didn’t help her view on him. So now in modern day, they’re both completely no contact.
