The many morning faces of Harry
Yesterday Harrison called his teacher a bitch at daycare. On the rare occasions Harrison says a yucky word I normally ignore it. But not this time. This morning Harrison took her some flowers to say sorry after I explained to him why we don't use that word to describe people. There's a big difference between saying the 'f' word when you stub your toe and calling someone a name. Words are powerful and should be used wisely. Take bitch, for instance. This word is used against women to undermine them. Harry doesn't know this, of course. But in that moment he picked a word he knew would make his teacher feel yucky. He used a yucky word because he knew it had the power to influence someone else's feelings. Using bitch the way he did is bullying. And I have zero tolerance for that shit.
Thankful for Sunday morning coffee and blue skies 🙌 (at Smith The Grocer)
In 2 months and 3 days this wild little leo 🦁will be THREE YEARS OLD. Three years of being a mama! Three years of #nosleepsquad. Three years of worrying, negotiating, navigating and sacrificing. Three years of getting to know this amazing little person and wondering what he's going to conquer next. Can't wait to celebrate 🎉🎁🎈 🥂💁
Harry's daycare have been celebrating Samoan Language Week this week. To top the week off the children are dressing up today, so Haz is wearing an ie faitaga. At first I wasn't going to encourage Haz to participate. Why? Because I'm conscious of cultural appropriation, which is when someone (usually from the 'dominant' culture) borrows important cultural expressions from a minority group. Examples of cultural appropriation are when white fashion models wear Native American headresses on the runway or when Katy Perry performed as a geisha at the American Music Awards. This is contrasted with cultural exchange, which is an invitation to respectfully participate in the cultural expressions of another culture. Cultural exchange is an important part of living in a multicultural society. We need to understand and respect the cultures we share our beautiful country with. Did you know Samoan is the third most spoken language in New Zealand? By 2026, it is projected that Pasifika will make up 10% of New Zealand’s population. Just under half of Pasifika (46.1%) are less than 20 years old, compared with 27.4% for the total population, which makes Pasifika the fastest growing young population in NZ. I don't pretend to know lots about Pasifika peoples. I'm woefully ignorant, but trying my best to learn. So I was pleased to see Harrison's daycare looking to their Samoan and Pasifika staff to shape and lead the activities this week so they could share their cultures with the children. This is important to me. My generation is one step closer to ridding the world of discrimination and inequality, even if it's happening so painfully slowly. I want to raise a person who is respectful and knowledgeable about other cultures and the history of this country and it's people. We need to pass on what we know to the next generation and hope they accelerate the change. La manuia le aso (have a good day)

This kid has so many brilliant, strong, inspirational female role models in his life. I'm so lucky to have my tribe of queens around us. As a feminist mama raising a little boy, it's so important to me that my son grows up thinking about the role that women play in society and the struggles of women past, present and future. I truly think this will make him a better man. We are all born with open minds and kind hearts. Instead of toughening my son for a cruel world, I want to inspire him make the world a better place 💕
Happy Mother’s Day to those that have had their babies. Happy Mother’s Day to all those still waiting for their due date. Happy Mother’s Day to those who never got to meet their baby. Happy Mother’s Day to those who are still waiting for the positive sign.
Running, jumping, climbing, splashing, hopping always on-the-go! This kid has so much energy
Harrison is at such a fun age right now. Sure there are still plenty of temper tantrums and sleep struggles. But as his language gets richer and more complex, I'm starting to get more of an insight into that beautiful, clever, hilarious little brain of his. I love when it's just us two. That's when he is at his most chatty. Plus he's starting to make actual jokes and it's pretty cute. When he was a baby I found it easier to keep him on a strict sleeping and eating schedule which made it hard to leave the house for long. But as he gets older we can be more spontaneous. Today we took advantage of the warm weather and drove down the beach. We kicked off our shoes and felt the sand between our toes. We wrote words in the sand, raced the waves, built sand castles and dug holes to fill with water. It was so fun and I genuinely just enjoyed hanging out with him. He's seriously such a cool little person. I'm so privileged to be his mama ❤️ (at Petone Beach)

We've had a super fun Easter weekend ❤
A well-deserved treat after a big Easter hunt this morning
Went to Masterton this morning with @brennawyllie to try and catch the hot air balloon festival, but we were too late. Luckily Queen Elizabeth park kept us busy for over 2 hours! Awesome playground, huge duck pond with paddle boats, an aviary, a fernery, and deer reached by crossing a swing bridge. We worked up quite the appetite so a trip to Clareville Bakery was in order on the way home 👌Lovely start to Easter weekend! 🐣🐰 (at Masterton, New Zealand)
#throwback to three generations ❤
If you go down to the woods today, you're sure for a big (well itty bitty) surprise!
