Let's say...war era, Draco as a double spy, strategy meetings are just endless quarrel between these two ft. awkward Harry trying~ to intervene
It is really important to me that all of you learn about Al Bean, astronaut on Apollo 12 and the fourth man to walk on the moon, who after 20 years in the US Navy and 18 years with NASA during which he spent 69 days in space and more than 10 hours doing EVAs on the moon , retired to become a painter.
He is my favorite astronaut for any number of reasons, but he’s also one of my favorite visual artists.
Like, look at this stuff????
It’s all so expressive and textured and colorful! He literally painted his own experience on the moon! And that's just really fucking cool to me!
Just look at this! This is one of my absolute favorite emotions of all time. Is Anyone Out There? is like the ultimate reaction image. Any time I have an existential crisis, this is how I picture myself.
And then there's this one:
The Fantasy
For all of the six Apollo missions to land on the moon, there was no spare time. Every second of their time on the surface was budgeted to perfection: sleeping, eating, putting on the suits, entering and exiting the LEM, rock collection, setting up longterm experiments to transmit data back to Earth, everything. These timetables usually got screwed over by something, but for the most part the astronauts stuck to them.
The crew of Apollo 12 (Pete Conrad, Al Bean, and Dick Gordon) had other plans. Conrad and Bean had snuck a small camera with a timer into the LEM to take a couple pictures together on the moon throughout the mission. They had hidden the key for the timer in one of the rock collection bags, with the idea being to grab the key soon after landing, take some fun photos here and there, and then sneak the camera back to Earth to develop them. They had practiced where they would hide the key and how to get it out from under the collected rocks back on Earth dozens of times.
But when they got to the moon, the key was nowhere to be found. Al Bean spent precious time digging through the collection bags before he called it off. The camera had been pushing their luck anyways, he couldn't afford to spend anymore time not on the mission objectives. Conrad and Bean continued the mission as per the NASA plan while Dick Gordon orbited overhead.
Fast forward to the very end of the mission. Bean and Conrad are doing last checks of the LEM before they enter for the last time and depart from the moon. As Bean is stowing one of the collection bags, the camera key falls out. The unofficially planned photo time has come and gone, and he tosses the key over his shoulder to rest forever on the surface of the moon.
This painting, The Fantasy, is that moment. There have never been three people on the moon at the same time, there was never an unofficial photo shoot on the moon, this picture could never have happened.
"The most experienced astronaut was designated commander, in charge of all aspects of the mission, including flying the lunar module. Prudent thinking suggested that the next-most-experienced crew member be assigned to take care of the command module, since it was our only way back home. Pete had flown two Gemini flights, the second with Dick as his crewmate. This left the least experienced - me - to accompany the commander on the lunar surface.
"I was the rookie. I had not flown at all; yet I got the prize assignment. But not once during the three years of training which preceded our mission did Dick say that it wasn't fair and that he wished he could walk on the moon, too. I do not have his unwavering discipline or strength of character.
"We often fantasized about Dick's joining us on the moon but we never found a way. In my paintings, though, I can have it my way. Now, at last, our best friend has come the last sixty miles." - Al Bean, about The Fantasy.
#i cannot explain how emotional the moon landings make me #an insane amount of effort and danger and lives expended for a few beautiful moments of exploration #even the earliest humans could understand the accomplishment of them #and yet the thing this astronaut wanted the most was for his friend to be able to join him

I've decided these pass peer review bc YES!!!! EXACTLY!!!! The moon landings were (and probably still are) the largest and most expensive undertaking in human history. Like, there was no historical precedent for what was happening in the Apollo program. We were sending people to the fucking moon!!!! It was not safe by any measure, something like ten of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo astronauts died between when Alan Shepard became the first American in space on Mercury-Redstone 3 and when Apollo 11 landed.
(Most of these deaths were actually pretty standard numbers, which hurts to type but is the truth. The astronauts of this era were military test pilots, aka one of the most dangerous jobs in the military but also the only place you would really find the people crazy enough to willingly sit atop a modified Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and ride the explosion 380,000km away and smart/skilled/calm/reactive enough to not die on the way. They were all still active duty during the whole Space Race, and accidents are not uncommon when you're flying the fastest and riskiest aircraft ever invented just to get to work in the morning. Six astronauts lost their lives due to crashing and/or exploding their jet aircrafts in routine flight, one died in a car crash, and Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Roger Chaffee, and Edward "Ed" White died during a routine ground test of Apollo 1.)
Yes, the Apollo program was a huge step forward in human technology and exploration and just an overall massive achievement! But it was also the job for these astronauts who, when you get down to it, are pretty normal people. Absurdly smart and skilled people with ungodly good reaction times and who might be missing some of the normal human survival instinct, but otherwise normal people. They had wives and kids and friends and hobbies, they played pranks on each other and made bets over what to say when they set foot on the moon and mocked each others' spaghetti eating capabilities. They painted pictures of the moon using moon dust, they sketched sunrise during spacewalks, they took photographs of the Earth rising over the moon from almost 400,000 km away.
They were just as human as the rest of us, and I wholeheartedly agree: it's beautiful that Al Bean was able to bring Dick Gordon to the moon with him and Pete Conrad even if it's only in a painting.

What song do you think they’re dancing to?
(I ate cake in bed while I drew this. I feel like Simon would approve.)
This is gorgeous! I love it! I love how simply joyous they look!
Maybe the song “I’m Happy Just to Dance with You” by the Beatles.
For people who are not familiar with the comic, can you tell us about your character?
Well he is not entirely wrong…

”Can you imagine that in a few weeks we’ll be out of here? You know what that means? We will never have to see these losers again”, Blaise said, trying to decide where to sit.
He was of course right. Only two more weeks left in Hogwarts before they all graduated. Draco smiled at his friend and reached for the quill. Two weeks. After that he would never have to sit in this classroom again.
”Couldn’t we sit somewhere else?” Theo asked. ”I haven’t done my homework and I don’t want old Flitwick to notice.”
”Come on Theo,” Draco said. ”We are already here. Might as well just sit and enjoy the last Charms lesson ever.”
”Maybe Theo is afraid that this won’t be his last lesson. I heard he almost failed potions.”
”Did not!” Theo punched Blaise’s arm and cursed right after, holding his fist. ”I mean, at least I didn’t have to flirt with the Ministry supervisor like some people.”
”Who said I flirted?” Blaise raised his eyebrow.
”Nobody. I’ve known you for eight long years, do you really think I couldn’t tell?”
”Fine. I’ll sit with you at the back row if it makes you feel better.”
”Thank you.”
”Draco, are you coming?”
The classroom was almost full. Draco looked at the seats in the back row, then at the empty desk to his right.
”I’m staying here”, he said. ”I already took out my books and everything.
”Suit yourself,” Theo said.
As his friends left, Draco kept tapping his fingertips against the desk, waiting. She was almost late. Only when the girl rushed into the classroom Draco realized he had been holding his breath. The girl was out of breath, too, like she had run all the stairs to the fourth floor.
He didn’t allow himself to look, not at first. He would rather die than have the girl notice his stare. And maybe the girl would be afraid of it, or even disgusted. No, he had to wait for the right moment just as he had done before.
Exactly fifteen past four the softest sunlight found its way into the classroom, turning everything into gold. He sit next to the window, feeling the warmth on his skin.
Slowly he raised his eyes from the desk to look at Hermione. She was listening to professor Flitwick, completely unaware of the sun playing in her hair. He looked at her glowing skin, her slight frown, long fingers that almost touched her lips as she focused and tried to soak in all the knowledge in the world. He felt a subtle ache on his chest.
Even if she did choose to turn her head right now to look at him she would only see the blinding light flooding from the window.

Chapter 8 of Let The Dark In, by @senlinyuwrites
Rainy kiss 🌧
simon snow
Working on the Fangirl manga. This bit from Fangirl is where I figured some stuff out about Simon as a character — and it’s the answer to a lot of questions about his sexuality and experience in the Simon Snow Trilogy.
Having spent a lot of time with Fangirl now (I wrote a screenplay a while back, and now I’m adapting the novel for the manga) — it’s remarkable of how much of the Simon and Baz stuff in that novel is consistent with Carry On and the rest of the Simon Snow Trilogy.
The original Simon and Baz content was written to support and tell Cath’s story in Fangirl…
But once I got through that book, I realized that I had built a world and already fleshed out the two main characters. Baz especially felt very developed.
I’ve said before that it felt like he was staring at me from the closed book, like, “Are you seriously going to just leave me here? You aren’t going to actually WRITE me? What a waste.”
