This imagine is based off of the song Marry Me by Thomas Rhett. I recommend listening to the song as you read.
I remember the night when I almost kissed her
Yeah, I kinda freaked out, we’d been friends for forever
You and Charlie had been friends since the very beginning. Your family along with the Lovegoods and the Diggorys lived close to his, making your friendship inevitable.
He was your first and best friend.
You two did almost everything together. You would play quidditch together, spend holidays together and even went to shop at Diagon Alley when it was time to attend Hogwarts.
Charlie was scared that you two would grow distant once you attended said school but you two only grew closer. Closer to the point that Charlie began to see you as more than just a friend. Every chance he got he would try to get alone time with you, even in the Forbidden Forest.
“Come on it should be right up ahead.” Charlie said, pulling you along through the Forbidden Forest. The boy was obviously excited, for reasons you were oblivious to.
“Charlie slow down I can barely see.” You commented stopping you and Charlie in your tracts.Charlie looked at you confused and slightly annoyed, for you had stopped his fast pace through the dark terrain. Before he could protest your sudden stop you pulled out your wand and casted a spell “Lumos.”. Your wand quickly illuminated with a white light making the area around you much more visible, this eased your nerves greatly.
“See isn’t that better.” You commented jokingly with smirk.
“Yeah sure come on.” Charlie replied, quickly grabbing your wrist and pulling you deeper into the forest. Before you knew it you two had come across a large pond, something you had yet to see while exploring the forest. You were about to comment on the beautiful pond but Charlie brought you behind a bush and placed a finger over his lips to signal for you to be quiet. He pointed across the pond with a gleeful smile and you quickly looked in said direction.
Right in front of you were two unicorns drinking from the pond. They were a beautiful white color that made the water in the pond glow from their reflection. You had never seen one outside of your Care for Magical Creatures book and honestly it did not compare to the real thing.
“They’re so beautiful.” you commented lowly as you looked at the unicorns. As cliche as it was Charlie wasn’t paying much attention to the creatures beauty, instead he was focused on your bright smile, something equally as beautiful to him. After a while you turned to thank him for bringing you to see the horned beauties only to see he was glancing at you and not the radiant creatures.
“You okay there Charlie?” you questioned, trying to pull him out of the trance he appeared to be in, which you succeeded in. Charlie blinked rapidly realizing his quick glance at you had turned into a long stare. He looked down and chuckled to himself in embarrassment but was grateful that the darkness of the forest hid his reddening cheeks from your view. He looked back up into your eyes seeing the concern in them.
Charlie suddenly got a burst of confidence and placed one of his hands along your cheek. He slowly began to lean in,wanting desperately to feel your lips against his. Before he closed his eyes you had appeared to be leaning in too but before your lips could meet a loud noise startled you both. You two pulled away quickly looking to where the noise had come from only to see the two unicorns running away from a large creature, one that you could not make out.
You looked to Charlie in panic and quickly stood to your feet grabbing for his arm in a hurry. Charlie was too much in a daze to realize what was going on. All he knew was that he was finally about to kiss you and it was ruined by God knows what.
“Charlie we have to go now!” you exclaimed as quietly as you could, not wanting to draw attention to Charlie or yourself.
Charlie heard the fear in your voice and quickly came to. He stood, grabbing your hand and taking off to where you two had left his broom. You both seemed to get there in no time. Once on the broom and high above the forest you began to laugh, confusing Charlie immensely.
“What got you all giddy? Charlie wondered as he chuckled himself since your laugh was so contagious.
“That was just really cool. Thanks for bringing me out here,I had a good time.” you said simply as you laid your head against Charlie’s back.Charlie didn’t know if it was your adrenaline talking or not but he was glad you had a good time despite basically running for your life.
Charlie wondered if part of your good time included the kiss you two almost shared. Unfortunately,he would never get the chance to find out, for he never got that burst of confidence ever again. He didn’t have the guts to bring up the almost kiss let alone try his chance at another attempt.
And I always wondered if she felt the same way
When I got the invite, I knew it was too late
Charlie was exhausted, he just wanted to come home after a long day of work and go to sleep but he couldn’t. Your owl stopped him in his tracks as soon as he saw it. He assumed it was your usual letter that he got once or twice a month but he was wrong. It was your wedding invite.
Charlie took the elegant envelope from the beak of the intelligent bird reluctantly, he knew this was unlike your usual letter. He quickly gave the bird a treat and it flew off into the darkening sky.
He stepped inside of his house slowly as he examined the beautiful envelope.Once fully inside he took off his shoes and grabbed for his sharp mail opener. He sliced opened the envelope rapidly almost cutting himself in the process.
The envelope opened with ease and began to play a soft melodic song as Charlie took the contents of the envelope out. He read over the paper quickly to the point where he had to read it several times to comprehend what you had sent him.He couldn’t believe what he had read. You were getting married.
The rest of the night Charlie felt numb. The thought of you ever getting married to someone but himself never crossed his mind. He didn’t even know you were in a relationship with someone. He knew you two would grow distant once he moved away to Romania but he didn’t know you both had drifted so far apart.
Charlie felt like he only had himself to blame. He had all of those chances to tell you how he felt but he threw them all away. He felt crushed.Throughout the night he kept asking himself what if. What if all those years ago he had actually kissed you? What if he had stayed in England with you and his family? What if you had loved him all along and he was too blind to see?
Charlie awoke the next morning not even realizing he had fell asleep. As he came to he hoped that the night before was a mere nightmare. However, as he scanned the area he saw the envelope and letter across the floor and his heart shattered all over again.
And I know her daddy’s been dreading this day
Oh, but he don’t know he ain’t the only one giving her away
Three months had passed since Charlie received his invite and it was now time for your wedding. He had arrived home a day early just so he could see his family. He hoped that their happy spirits would lift the sad one building inside him the closer your wedding got.
Once he arrived the first one to greet him of course was his mother Molly. She brought him into a strong hug, especially for someone of her stature. It had a been a while since she saw her song so this was a much needed hug for them both.Charlie chuckled and hugged his mother back lovingly. Over her shoulder Charlie saw his older brother looking at him with a smile on his face but sadness in his eyes.
Bill knew how much Charlie cared for you for he had grown alongside you and Charlie.Bill was another close friend of yours but not nearly as close as you and Charlie were. Bill was not blind, he saw how Charlie looked at you every time you entered a room. He knew how much his brother’s heart must be breaking as they prepared for your wedding. That being said as soon as their mother let go Bill pulled his younger brother into the the tightest hug he could fathom.
Charlie once again chuckled knowing exactly why his brother was treating him said way.Charlie admittedly wanted to crumble and cry while in his brother’s hold but he wouldn’t let himself, especially not in front of their mother. Both brothers patted the other strongly on the back and released from the hug with a saddened smile.
The rest of the day Charlie caught up with his family and told them stories of his life in Romania. That night Charlie couldn’t sleep for his mind was racing with thoughts on everything that could happen tomorrow. He was so restless that he decided to go down stairs to walk outside thinking that the cool air might clear his head. However, before he could reach the end of the stairs he heard the sound of crying, your crying.
“Y/N sweetie you need to calm down.”. Charlie heard his mother speak soothingly as a mother would. At her words your sobs turned into slower tears and a steadier breath. Charlie stood frozen in his spot on the stairs.
“I’m sorry Molly. I must look like an idiot.” you said wiping the tears from your slightly puffy eyes. Charlie heart broke even more than it already was when he heard the shakiness in your voice. He had heard you cry on several occasions and every time the sound haunted him for days on end until he knew you were better. This instance would be would be no exception.
“You’re not an idiot dear, you’re just getting cold feet.” Molly simply said as she caressed your shaking hand. The words his mother spoke gave him the smallest since of hope. Were you really going to call off the wedding?
“Let me ask you this. Can you see yourself spending the rest of your life with this person? Can you see yourself loving them unconditionally not matter what may come your way? Do you love them?” Molly asked calmly, trying not to overwhelm you. Charlie waited for your answer impatiently,he felt like his heart was about to leap from his chest. Your response was taking longer than he anticipated making him even more anxious.
“I - ” You began but was interrupted by a creak from the stairs. Charlie heard the noise as well and quickly cursed at himself for he had made the noise. He didn’t realize that he was literally on the edge of a step as he waited for your answer. He also cursed the older house for giving him away.
“Who’s there ?” You questioned as you stood from your seat and headed for the stairs. Charlie once again cursed silently before apparating to his bedroom. You reached the stairs and saw nothing. You begin to think your emotions were causing you to be paranoid but Molly just reassured that the house was old and often made noises.
After this you decided to go home, not answering a single one of Molly’s questions.
Bet she got on her dress now, welcoming the guests now
I could try to find her, get it off of my chest now
The next day came and Charlie wondered if you had actually called off the wedding but to his misfortune it was still happening. He got dressed in his black suit and a black tie to his dismay, it being something his mother made him wear. Charlie snuck in a flask knowing he would need it to get through the day. He wasn’t much of a drinker but this was a special occasion.
Charlie walked into the familiar back yard that belonged to your family. He began to remember all the fun times you two shared back here. All the games, picnics, sleepovers, and quidditch matches coming back to him. He smiled happily at the fond memories.
His nostalgia was ruined however when he saw you in your wedding attire. Anyone could see that you were breathtaking, especially Charlie. You were welcoming the small amount of people you had invited to your special day, including his family. He wanted so badly to go up and speak to you but he was understandable nervous.
He thought about the night before and how you came to his mom about the cold feet you were experiencing. He also thought about if he confessed now would it tip the scale just far enough for you to change your mind and call off the whole thing.
But I ain’t gonna mess it up, so I’ll wish her the best now
Charlie immediately let the thought leave his mind. He couldn’t do that to you. He couldn’t ruin your happiness just because he wasn’t happy himself.
Charlie was so out of it that he didn’t realize he was the next to see you. You had just hugged his older brother Bill when two meet eyes. You quickly smiled and went to hug him but Charlie froze.Just as you were about to question his sudden state he ran off.
“Charlie!” you shouted after him and almost ran after him but was stopped by Bill who grabbed your arm lightly. You looked to him confused but he only shook his heading, telling you not to follow after his brother.
Yeah, she gonna get married
But she ain’t gonna marry me
Charlie had decided to skip the wedding. He could barely handle thinking about you getting married let alone actually seeing it.
Charlie snuck off to one of your old spots. It was a small pond not far from your two houses. It’s where you and Charlie often went when you two wanted to be away from your houses.
It wasn’t unusual for you both to just say nothing the entire night in comfortable silence, that was just how close you two were, all you needed were each other’s company.
As Charlie reminisced the morning sun turned into a sunset sky just like the ones you two used to enjoy. Charlie sat at the pond slightly crying as he skipped rocks, another thing you both used to do. He went to grab another rock but heard the break of a twig from behind him. He quickly stood and pulled out his wand threateningly.
To his surprise you appeared from the thick trees with your hands raised in surrender.
You stood before him with your now dirty wedding attire with tears streaming down your cheeks much like his own. He lowered his wand and you sent him a sad smile with a shrug of your shoulder.
You had called off the wedding.
