The cupcake isn’t just a cupcake. It’s a symbol of happiness. Happiness that comes from someone she loves.

The first time he gave her a cupcake, she was probably happier than she’d ever been in her life because she was finally free for the first time. After that, the cupcake becomes an apology or a check-in and cheer-up. It’s Eugene bringing her something that made her so happy the first time he met her because he wants to make her happy. But more than once, she sets it aside, troubled by something else. Not because she doesn’t love Eugene, but because true happiness doesn’t come from a thing, it comes from inside her heart. And her heart is not at peace when her friends are hurting or she is doubting herself.

The last time we see him give her a cupcake, she is at peace with herself and others.  There’s nothing standing in the way between her and happiness. This time, Eugene gives her a cupcake and, with it, offers her a lifetime of happiness… and she finally accepts it. Marriage isn’t what makes her happy, but she wants to get married because she is happy.

She is finally, truly happy knowing there is more inside of her than she ever thought, knowing she can help her friends, knowing she is not defined by her magical hair, knowing the people around her love her, knowing that she can be queen, knowing that marriage is her next adventure, knowing that she’s got this. Life is a journey, and somewhere along the way, she grew into this strong, confidant wife and queen and she watched as Eugene grew past his self-centered life of crime and his abandonment issues into a steady, caring husband. Of course she always wanted to marry Eugene just as he always wanted to marry her, but now they are truly ready.
