she snorted, β if you HONESTLY thought that i was into your sister, you are out of your mind. sheβs one of my BEST friends.Β β she shook her head, a smile tugging at her features.Β β well, you donβt have to. justβ¦more like a suggestion.Β β she shrugged her shoulders, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. something felt DIFFERENT and it confused her.Β β you donβt..you donβt HAVE to stay.Β β
Β Β Β Β Β Β β oh, cβmon car. i donβt know what youβre into. β a pause, as her words register. β plenty of people have crushes on their friends. i was into this one girl at college, and βΒ β he stifles the word vomit, before he sounds too much like an idiot. β i can stay, carmen. itβs really not that big a deal β your couch is pretty comfy. itβs a little cold to walk across town, anyways. β thereβs something in the air β a charge of electricity. but he pushes his selfishΒ desires down, hiding them from himself.

Β Β starter for astrid james ; Β @glorywordsΒ
hayden had become the definition of a pariah; ever since she took it upon herself to euthanize her familyβs horse in a frowned upon way, the town of sheffield had cast the girl aside. most were too disgusted by the act she committed to strike up a conversation, or were too involved with more of theΒ β budding serial killer β rumors to notice as she passed in the halls. this was why she was surprised to hear that astrid β whom she hadnβt spoken to in years after a falling out β needed a tutor and wanted her. of course, hayden wasnβt an idiot and knew that her own mother extended a healthy stack of cash toward the james family in order to rekindle the two girlsβ friendship. she wasnβt offended by her momβs actions nor appreciative, instead she remained unconcerned. if people didnβt want anything to do with her, so be it. she worked better alone.Β
the girl climbed up the steps to astridβs porch, memories of when the two spent afternoons playing on the painted wood. they were far younger then, too young to understand the complexities of the emotions β or, in haydenβs case, lack thereof β rattling around inside them. small hand balled into an even smaller fist as she grew closer to the large front door, opting for knocking rather than ringing the doorbell. she hated the loud sounds they made and with this quieter method, sheβd have a better chance of getting to leave unnoticed.
years. it had been years since sheβd spoken to hayden β not since sheβd seen her, of course, as they went to the same school. but since theyβd had a conversation, words exchanged in a friendlyΒ fashion. it felt odd, to astrid, that her mother would hire hayden nilsen to tutor her β or at least, until astridβs mother casuallyΒ mentioned that mrs. nilsen was payingΒ astrid to be haydenβs friend. even if english wasnβt her strong suit, sheβd been surprised at the need for a tutor. though, sheβd bet anything that her step-father had a part in her motherβs sudden desire for astrid to haveΒ one.
she heard a soft rap on the front door, and blonde head lifts from the notes before her. essays. she hatedΒ them β give her math problems any day. she waits for a moment, head cocked to the side, awaiting a second knock β before noting that it was likely haydenΒ outside, and that the other wasnβt going to knock again. rumors rattled in her head, sending a shiver down her spine, but she stands, breathing deeply, and walks towards the door. fingers close around the cool brass, and she pulls the door open ( it feels like slow motion ), stepping aside to welcome the other in.
Β Β Β Β β hayden. hi. β

β ββ β because theyβre PROJECTING; giving me the advice they really need to be giving to themselves. i have often found that this is the case in situations like these, if you catch my drift. β
Β Β Β Β β if youβre gettingΒ advice, doesnβt that usuallyΒ mean you need it ? i mean, i donβt normally give out advice willy-nilly, but maybe thatβs just me. β

β whereβd you pick that up? sounds like you read the DICTIONARY. β
Β Β Β β i learned it in class.Β high school, actually. β

Β the distance between them closes before arms gather lilaβs frame close in an embrace that she hopes will communicate more than her lips will.Β β Β i know. Β β words whispered against dark hair so reminiscent of her own. she hadnβt left out of hurt. dalton and marion hadnβt felt like an us far before that, she couldnβt reach him, and the weight of it all, the REFUSAL had begun to push her β drowning where thereβs no fluid left. sheβd left so she could breathe again. so that her children could have a mother that wasnβt left hollow. one that was present behind every smile and every kiss goodnight.Β Β βΒ iβm sorry. Β βΒ her hands clasp round that spitting image of herself as she pulls back.Β
βΒ iβm proud of you. and youβve grown. you have thoughts and opinions of the world that have reason, thought and value from academia and experience. show him that. you donβt have to bare or open your heart to him if you want to. maybe just start withβ¦ your favourite authors. orβ¦ eggnog.Β Β β
lila melts into her motherβs arms, reverting back to a childish comfort. itβs reminiscent of the protection against nightmares, of days spent worryingΒ over her sisterβs disappearance and the possibility of hazel following. curtains of dark hair cover both of them, and sheβs remindedΒ of the fact that, were she and marion the same age, they could be twins β sheβs a mirror image of her motherβs younger self. β why are you sorry ? β she questions, pulling out of the hug. β itβs hisΒ fault, not yours. β
Β Β Β Β β but why does he deserve to know ?Β β her expression becomes pained β she hates sharingΒ to begin with. sheβs reserved, closed off β prefers to keep things to herself. and she knows her father is essentially a strangerΒ to her now, unfamiliar. uncomfortable. β i know heβs my dad, but he doesnβt feel like one.Β β

Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β " Oh,Β Β Β come on, we get toΒ Β Β rummageΒ Β Β through her desk and change you and your friends grades. Do anything you want in there andΒ Β Β nobodyΒ Β has to know. β The very breath of a laugh escapes his lips. β You enjoy making me beg ? WeΒ Β bothΒ Β donβt have anything better to do. β Hopefully the last statement lands with some form of truth. Most kids in this town had nothing to do. Small towns were often like some sort of purgatory, an eternal wait for something, anything.
itβs tempting. so, soΒ fucking tempting. she knows she should say no, just walk away and head to class, create chaos with kyle some other time. she bites her nails in thought, hesitance waning as temptation rises. sheβs been so good lately β she deserved a littleΒ fun. the only way itβd hurt was if they got caught. β alright, fine. iβm IN. βΒ

her words caught him off guard. it was christmas, they should be together. but he didnβt want to be. without rowan, it was useless, pointless. he sighed yet again, throwing his pencil over on his desk. he had to think over his next words carefully. β i have plans actually. but uhβ maybe next year. β perhaps his words were a little harsh, not to mention a blatant lie but theyβd have to suffice.
lips purse in irritation, and she bites back a scathing attack on him. β you have plans. on christmas. β sheβs shocked β sheβd thought her father to be quite reclusive, especially since rowanβs disappearance. β forgive me for calling bullshit. β the words are bitter, snappy β sheβs close to losing her temper, something she attempts to keep under control most of the time.

walking out of her office, sylvia bit her lower lip noticing kristineβs light was still on. she took a step inside and knocked lightly on the door,Β β is there anything you want me to do for you before i leave, kristine?Β β
she looks up from her desk as she hears sylvia enter β she intends to stay late at the office tonight, as she prefers the quiet town hall to the deafening silence of her home. a gentle smile crosses her lips, and she shakes her head at the blonde, pushing glasses up her nose. β no, youβre free to go home, ms. cowell. β

laurel set the glass down on the dining room table. she pulled a chair out and took a seat, a smile on her face. β so, tell me about this movie. whatβs it about? the setting? β
Β Β Β Β β well, itβs a documentary. β katherine says, looking up from the notes in front of her. she places them in front of her β a group of well-organizedΒ ideas and thoughts about where she wants the film to go. she offers her mother a smile, adding, β about sheffield. β she pauses, trying to figure out what to say next.Β Β

Β Β Β Β β lookinβ good, phillips. β a smirk plays across lips, and he raises an eyebrow at her. he hadnβt seen her lately, and it was a surprise to run in to her β especially off campus. this was going to be a goodΒ conversation.
