My hot take is that Mike Wheeler gets 100 times better if you make him aromantic. "There's no platonic explanation for this" there is. There's always a platonic explanation.

Well, we’re just always partners, okay? STEVE HARRINGTON and DUSTIN HENDERSON in STRANGER THINGS
Say what you want about volume 2... But the Steve and Dustin scenes make me feel like my heart is crawling out of my chest. Their fight and Steve telling Dustin not to hurt himself? "I missed my best friend" and "if you die, I die"? Dustin's voice cracking as he tells Steve he can't lose someone again? THE HUG? 😭😭😭 Like I was in tears after that.
Thought about volume 2 (spoilers)
Things I liked
-All the Dustin and Steve stuff
-Actually, Dustin was probably the stand out for me in these three episodes, I loved him
-Byclair and madwise crumbs
- I really liked Will but I just felt so bad for him 😭 give my boy a break, he's really been put through it.
- Lucas and Max's reunion
- Max and Holly's dynamic/friendship
- The Kali/el stuff wasn't actually too bad even though I know a lot of people didn't want her return and have a kind of irrational hatred of that one episode in season 2
- the Jancy scene was very emotional although I know it was apparently a break up scene? Idk
- Karen being a badass
Things I didn't like
- That elmax didn't hug when reuniting
- Honestly I love El and she was great as always but she also felt like... A little sidelined? Maybe I'm wrong about that but we'll see what happens in the finale I guess
- Will's coming out scene was like... It was well acted but it should have been just his family and the party
- I'm not even a byler shipper but the way they have handled it is not good. They shouldn't have made Will have an unrequited love interest for so many seasons. If they were going to give him another love interest it should've happened sooner. Idk rubs me the wrong way
-Some of the dialogue felt kind of weird? But idk I need to sit with it for sure. Overall I think they played it pretty safe tbh but that's just how I feel.
Overall episode 6 was probably my favourite. I really liked Dustin, Will, Max and Holly, they were my favourite parts I think. Lucas was great as always even though he didn't get much screen time. Same with Robin although she also didn't get as much screentime as volume 1? (Maybe. I think.)
It's unstable. I got it already, okay? STRANGER THINGS 5.06
Given the dangerous and deeply false stereotype that children are unsafe around queer and black people (because they’re viewed as predators), I thought it was so heartwarming how Mike, Will, Lucas, and Robin were the main ones who were protecting the kids, and how gentle they were
I made a now-deleted post about Billy Hargrove, stating how I didn’t understand why people defend him, and received mixed responses. My previous post was quite brief and lacked depth, which is why I’m making this follow-up. Screenshots will be added for context.
Firstly, we need to understand what media literacy is. Media literacy is defined as the ability to critically analyse stories presented in the mass media and to determine their accuracy or credibility. Stranger Things falls under mass media and is viable to critical analysis. Now, is analysing characters in the show media literacy? Yes, it is. Analysing a fictional character is more than simply liking the character or enjoying the story. It allows you to understand the message, their choices, the character’s actions, what they represent, how they influence viewers, and explore societal themes. So @rigginsstreet I’d suggest you read more on this topic before impulsively denouncing it.
Next, we need to discuss Billy as a character.
Abuse: He was a victim of abuse, specifically domestic violence perpetrated by his father. This later made him an abuser, too. We don’t know that much about how badly he abused Max, but she does say he made her life hell. I’d like to thank @richard-billy-hargrove for pointing out that the abused usually become abusers as a byproduct of what they went through. Although this is a reason why he was the way he was, it does not excuse his behaviour towards those around him. He became the same thing that hurt him.
Jonathan vs Billy: In @lil-the-notverywise post, OP points out how both Jonnathan and Billy were abused by their fathers. The stark difference is that Jonnathan did not turn around and abuse his younger brother and others. He didn’t ostracise Lucas either. Sure, Jonathan was a creep, but he stopped as soon as he was called out for it. Why couldn't Billy do the same?
Could Billy have unlearned his abusive behaviour? Who knows? All we know is that he repeated a cycle he learned, which he could have abandoned as he grew up. Not all abused children grow up to be perpetrators. Defending Billy’s abuse towards others would be the same as defending his abusive father.
Racism: A majority of Billy’s fans are unsurprisingly white. This is important to understand when discussing this topic. Since Billy’s introduction on Stranger Things, black ST fans have had to explain multiple times that Billy was a racist, but his fans continue to brush it off. White fans like to paint the narrative that Billy isn’t a racist sociopath. They do this by calling him broken, misunderstood and blaming his father for the pain he inflicts on others.
The Duffer brothers have confirmed (multiple times) that Billy was written to be a representation of racism in the ‘80s. Matt Duffer: “He is racist, I think. It's [reflective of] people that he's viewing as different from him and an overall rage at the world.” Season 2’s original script included using a racial slur to refer to Lucas, which was later dropped because Dacre refused to say the word. His racism would have been more blatant if they had agreed to keep the slur in. Although this doesn’t directly fall into canon, it is enough to prove that Billy was designed to be a racist.
The Duffers used microaggressions to further push Billy’s bigoted mindset. When in the car with Max, he says, “This is serious s--t, okay? I'm older than you. And something you learn is that there's a certain type of people in this world, that you stay away from. And that kid, Max - that kid is one of them. You stay away from that kid, you hear? Stay away.”
Racism in the ‘80s was perverse. Systematic discrimination and racial violence, and riots were common. The KKK was still kicking, the media still pushed racial stereotypes about minorities - especially black people - in TV and movies. With that being said, what else could Billy have possibly meant when he said that? “One of them”, “certain types of people” It is painfully obvious he is not talking about boys but about black people.
The dismissal of Billy being a racist represents how privileged a majority of the fandom is. Most of you have never experienced racism and will most likely never experience it. It’s no wonder that it comes easily for you to abandon the fact that he’s a bigot. To the minority fans who love Billy, it’s quite backwards of you to receive someone who would not utter a single positive word to you if given the chance.
Comparison of Billy and Lucas' popularity on the show: Lucas is a part of the main cast for the show; however, his fanbase is significantly smaller than Billy’s - a character who died 2 seasons ago. Knowing that the ST fanbase is predominantly white and dismissive of racism. It’s no surprise that there is a shortage of fan edits, fan fiction and fan art for Lucas Sinclair. On Tumblr alone, the Billy Hargrove tag has 14k followers while Lucas Sinclair has 6.3k. ST fans would much rather keep up with the racist, abusive character than the only black male character on the show. Blaming Lucas’ fans for not pushing out a significant amount of content for him is shifting the blame onto black fans instead of acknowledging that racism plays a role in why such content is lacking. The love is there, it just simply isn’t enough because you all choose to ignore him for a man who hates people like him.
Lastly, I believe many of you only excuse Billy’s bigoted actions because he’s attractive. We see this in real life. A somewhat attractive white man could commit a crime, and an influx of white girls (and gays) will be at his defence. You would be the same people who look at male terrorists and blame the women in their lives for not going to prom with him, or blame the black man’s actions for why a cop wrongfully shot him.
Lucas ate up his 5 minutes of screentime in volume 1. The scene where he comes in and protects Dustin from the bullies? Where he puts two and two together about Holly disappearing and how it's probably not a coincidence that it's almost the anniversary of Will's disappearance? His scene with Max 😭 asking her to wake up and that he misses her? Him trying to protect the kids in the tunnels? Like. Don't touch him 😭 he can't die please
My pet peeve are those jokes about will getting jealous of El and trying to show her up with his powers to get Mike's attention or El getting super jealous of Mike admiring Will idk it rubs me the wrong way. I just wish people would stop revolving their characters only around Mike and start recognising how much they care about each other. And how interesting their relationship is even without Mike. Let's not forget how El was the one to help find Will in season 1 and how they lived together all of season 4 and how they've both suffered so much at the hands of Vecna. I know all of it jokes but I still find them annoying. I personally hope they work together in volume 2 and show how strong their sibling relationship really is. I love the scene in volume one where El is holding him after he collapses 😭 they both are my babies. If either of them die... They deserve happy endings.
PLEASE have at least one willel scene in volume 2, I need it for my own sanity and especially after certain events in episode 4. I wanted it before then anyway but now I need it even more.
Spoilers below for stranger things 5
Initial thoughts
- I loved all the Nancy and Mike scenes
- When Hopper was talking about Sara and how he doesn't want to lose another daughter.... God if El dies. I loved El and Hopper scenes
- So much Robin and Will! Loved them together
-Lucas was great as usual, and the Lumax hospital scene 😭
-Poor Holly 😭 leave the poor girl alone, that scene with Karen was traumatic
- And Dustin 😭 really going through it this season
-The way Steve is acting is really bothering me, I feel like he should be comforting Dustin instead of getting annoyed at him
- I'm over the Stancy/Jancy love triangle and honestly, I kind of feel like Nancy is too.
The most out of character thing in the world is Steve Harrington seeing one of his kids, in fact the kid he is closest with among the kids, beaten all to hell and being MAD at him for getting hurt as if he’s a burden.
Duffers I’m in your walls you idiots
Dustin lets go when he loses someone and lucas holds on way tighter when he loses someone. Therefore they are the best duo ever
willel hits SO much harder now, they share the same assaulter. el was being groomed, the fake bonding, sharing a “secret”, isolating her from everyone, she was left in a blood bath and years later lured in and held without any ability to move, trying so hard while being taken advantage of. will has been abducted and assaulted, isolated and tortured, manipulated and abused. the way people don’t understand how special their bond is especially since they became siblings is insane
Elmike in season 1 are so adorable 😭 come home elmike we need you
If Lucas dies I am truly going to crash out
Leave my boy alone 😭😭😭
