I have been fantrolling for over a decade and one thing that’s always left me astounded is this: People thinking that they can make a troll based on a closed ethnic religion. Especially ones that, really, cannot be researched properly on the internet or even in most books due to the way that racism has completely altered the perception of the religion and what is known about it. I’m specifically referring to “voodoo trolls.”

I still remember when they first started popping up. People (white people) literally see Dr. Facilier one time and think that basing things off of him and what they see in maybe a Google link or two is enough to respectfully portray such a concept. Ones that maybe look into the trivia part of his Disney Wiki article may even know his design is based on Baron Samedi, but that’s as far as that fucking goes. Then things started to branch into straight up “ooga booga racist Afro-Caribbean caricature” designs.

I don’t know about y’all, but I really don’t think that my ancestors and their beliefs survived slavery, colonialism, religious hegemony, forced assimilation, and many other horrors for people to look at them, their beliefs, and culture and go, “I’m going to make a piece of shit character off of this and win diversity points for acknowledging that Afro-Caribbean religions and people exist.”

I’m kind of impressed that no one, after all this time, has gone, “I really cannot find much of anything substantial on this. Maybe it isn’t my business and I will step away from it.” But I guess that’s asking too much of anyone in this community because it calls for having things like consciousness, basic decency, and brain cells.

Religions you have no rights or grounds to claim aren’t something for people to co-opt to create a character roster. This goes the same way for cultures. Though the real reality of the situation is that people seem to have forgotten that they’re RPing aliens. I am a fan of sprinkling things that I do know and have experienced based on being from a race of people that’s fetishized, hated, objectified, and oppressed at the same damn time, BUT. It isn’t all that I lean on when I am writing a fucking alien. There comes a point where these kinds of things just make Actual People And Their Cultures look like a fucking joke and it needs to stop.

The community really could just make shit up. Again, we’re writing aliens, but I guess most of it doesn’t have the originality or the creativity to do so. Even after all these years.
