So are we just supposed to believe that Uther spent all of Arthur's young life persecuting magic users, but few of them tried to attack the royal family? Bewitch, ensorcel, or otherwise take their revenge upon them? Or were they so bad they failed every time?
Or are we supposed to believe they waited twenty years until Merlin showed up and then started attacking? So that Merlin was able to stop them? Because how the heck did Camelot survive before Merlin got there if magic users were attacking like they did before he arrived? Luck? Incompetence? Gaius?
This brings up some fic ideas...Maybe Gaius handled a lot of the magic attacks until Merlin showed up and was filled with relief when he could finally stop and focus on his physician duties.
Maybe Merlin's arrival is what triggered the uptick in attacks - destiny awakened and all that.
And what would have happened if Merlin had never gone to Camelot? Less attacks? More attacks? The royal family wiped out by daggers, love potions, and trolls? I might give this one a go come fall because there is little doubt in my mind that at some point (probably between season 4 and 5) Merlin went thru a deep depression and questioned everything.
I really do wonder about the first eighteen-twenty years of Arthur's life and want Camelot was like, though.
