I love my job! Especially on days like this. Today I was invited to hang out with 6th graders from Mount Elden Middle School at the @friendsofcampcolton camp. Highlight of my day? That’s easy. We were at a small pond at around 10,000 feet above sea level learning about micro and macro invertebrates. Turns out there were some vertebrates there too. Lots of baby garter snakes 6 to 8 inches long. There are no predators for them up here. So they were everywhere. I only interrupted the lesson once. It was when I saw a baby snake with a clam stuck on its head. True. The snake had attempted to eat the clam and got its head stuck inside the shell. I did what any good Boy Scout leader would do. I called the kids over to take a look at the snakes predicament and then I picked up the snake and extracted its head from the clam and then returned both clam and the snake to the pond. A lot of mixed feelings today. We’re flying to New York City on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. We’ll serve 155 year old Brooklyn Community Services, there will be a gala on Monday. We’ll see my son and pay our respects to all those lost 20 years ago. When COVID shut down the world last year, the first trip I lost that I cared about was to New York and Montreal.
