Finding Bones In Forests: A short Guide
Heyo! Iāve had quite a few asks regarding where to find bones and what forests are best for finding them. So Iām going to write up a short guide because Iām bored. In order from worst to best, here are some preferred places.Ā
State parks and nature reserves:
Not the best choice for a variety of reasons. State parks and nature reserves tend to be heavily walked by people. If there were bones there they were likely already picked up. They are often managed and cleaned. Park rangers will scour the parks for litter and other harmful things. That includes dead animals. Depending on the park it may be illegal to remove anything from the grounds.Ā
Large Expanses Of Natural Wilderness:
While truly natural untouched wilderness is the perfect place for animals to thrive to their fullest. Animals in forests like this tend to be long living and spread out. Which makes finding bones of dead animals challenging.Ā
Natural wilderness with predator populations:
Similar to the last location, animals tend to be spread out. However forests with a high population of wolves, coyotes, big cats, etc tend to be a bit more promising. I used to live in a forest with 2 large wolf packs and I would find deer bones once a week or so. Unfortunately these bones were almost always chewed up.Ā
Farmland forests:Ā
Small forests surrounded by farm fields. These forests often have denser populations of animals due to habitat destruction. If your forest is near farms with livestock you can sometimes (rarely) find fallen stock dumps which are a goldmine of neat bones. Cows, sheep, pigs, etc.Ā
Forests near urban land:
Specifically forests that donāt have humans walking in them often. Like the forests in unused lots behind the Walmart. Often full of litter. Similarly to farmland forests animals often congregate in them in large numbers due to habitat destruction. The animals living in these forests are unfortunately less healthy which leads to a lot of deaths and therefor bones. However if the forest is too small it may have no wildlife populations. You will only find animals that can tolerate urban environments.Ā
Forests along fast moving roads and highways:
Roadkill. Things will get hit and crawl back into the woods to die. That and scavengers will drag roadkill into the woods so they can eat in safety.Ā
Public hunting land:
Good place for finding bones. Hunters will leave a lot more of the animals than they really should⦠Doe skulls, buck skulls without caps, legs and hooves, full fur animal skeletons. Land thats been hunted for many years can have a lot of bones. Your finds will often be limited to hunted species.Ā
The perfect forest:
A forest near a body of water, bordered by a country road, and some farmland, that is also public hunting land. I have a forest like this by my aunts house. I counted in one trip: 4 doe skulls(3 skeletons), 1 buck skull, 6 raccoon skulls (1 full skeleton), 2 opossum skulls, 1 cow skull, half a coyote skeleton and an entire life-sized fake deer.Ā Ā
Some extra Tips: Make sure the forest you are searching in isnāt private property. And if it is make sure you have the permission of a landowner. If you are on public hunting land during hunting season wear bright colors.Ā
Forests with thick ground cover tend to hide bones making them impossible to spot. To counter this go in early spring after the snow has melted and before ground foliage regrows. Pine forests and dark forests are the easiest to see the ground as they have less ground cover.Ā
Ignoring the cross (100% respect but no) this is SO cool, I'm gonna make another account just to share stuff related to clothes I like???
How do you skin birds while preserving the feathers?
Hmm, I wasnāt sure how exactly to explain it so I made a super simplified illustrated taxidermy tutorial! Thereās a lot more to it than this but this is just the basics of how taxidermy works.

I'll get one or two teeth out eventually (they're facing sideways and are under my skin?)so I hope I remember to ask for them š
Non vultures' questions:
If this was your pet, wouldn't you feel bad about it? No, I actually have a cat on my backyard waiting to get cleaned.
Why?? I think it's a way of honoring the dead and as a spiritual person, I believe they are attached to them and they won't be mad if I just do it respectfully.
If this was a HUMAN no one would think it looks cute, right? WRONG, some vultures collect human bones as well but it's not legal in most cases so...that's why we don't have them.
They suffered for you yo keep them as decor! No, most of us collect roadkill, animals who died of natural causes (and a small percentage) or buy/get them from butchers/hunters who won't use the skulls.
They aren't cute! Yes, they are. Bones are beautiful, fight me.
My parents got me horns the other day, I wonder what animal these are from 𤧠I don't trust people a lot so I avoid buying animal remains but I'm so happy they got me these, they asked the seller and they said it was a gift from someone on the countryside so I believe them š¤·š»āāļø if anyone has any idea of which animal has horns like this, tell me š°š
Basic bone cleaning
Once your bones are rid of most flesh and muscle, You can begin to clean and whiten them. Cleaning is pretty simple, all you need is: - sponge/tooth brush or any other scrubbing supplies you wish - gloves ( optional )  - some warm soapy water - place for them to air dry - some hydrogyn peroxide * small note about peroxide, i use the basic brown bottles you find in the first aid section of corner stores or grocery stores⦠it is diluted and safe to handle ( about 3-5%, if you are working with a more concentrated formula, use gloves and handle cautiously. - and a container large enough to fit your bones
1) Put on your gloves ( if you have chosen to use them),take your warm soap water ( I use Dr.Bronners soap)  and cleaning supplies⦠hand scrub the bones to remove any dirt, dried flesh or moss that may have accumulated.
( above photo of 2 deer skulls, a small yogurt container of soap water, tooth brush and sponge)
2) Once your bones are scrubbed and free of most dirt/grime ( doesnāt have to be 100% perfect and pristine) place them in a safe spot to air dry for a few hours/a few days ( the larger and thicker the bone the longer drying time you will need) 3) When your bones are dry, you can start to sanitize and whiten them. Ā Place the bones within your chosen container ( old Tupperware, buckets or glass dishes/jars work well for this) Ā Once all your bones are placed inside, fill the container with hydrogen peroxide until all bones are fully submerged Ā * side note, some smaller bones float along with extremely sun dried bones⦠just try to rotate them a bit during the soaking process*
( above photo, teeny mouse bones soaking)
( photo above, porcupine and duck bones in a small tupperware of peroxide)
4) allow your bones to soak over night! soaking time differs from person to person, you can leave your bones to soak from anywhere to over night- a few weeks The longer you soak your bones in peroxide, the whiter they will become.
When the bones are your desired color⦠lay them out to air dry. Once dry, they are good for display or utilizing in art <3
Please keep in mind this is only my personal method for cleaning, there are other methods available and other method preferences for each individual.
So I am new to Vulture Culture, but I really like it so far!! When you find bones and stuff if they're dirty with moss, mold, or meat, what do you do with them?? Or do you just have any links?? You don't have to answer this, but thank you if you do!! :D
Welcome to the community! =D
If you find dirty bones youāll want to properly clean them. Unless youāre into dirty bones and arenāt worried about them being a health hazard, that is. Thereās a few different ways to clean bones, depending on the condition of the bones, age and sometimes species of the animal, and what youāre personally able to do. To make things easy, Iām going to share some posts with you that make good how-to guides:

Skull Cleaning Videos
Hey guys, I was browsing around on YouTube and came across the channel US Skull Hunter. Thought his videos about skull cleaning were useful and worth sharing over on here. He shows how he does it, he does multiple skulls with slightly different variations so you can get a full idea of how each method works, shows the end product, talks about the pros and cons, doesnāt use any bad methods like bleach-bleaching or boiling skulls, and all of the videos are well made and well edited. Feel free to browse through the comments sections for additional info! Heās got other great videos on additional bone-related topics as well.

Sadly nothing on dermestid beetles, but I can tell ya from personal experience the end results are better than the ants. Theyāre a lot more of a commitment though.
I need to share this for myself but also it's helpful so... here!
