Porsche 914/6, 1969. The 914 was the result of a collaboration between Volkswagen and Porsche. Originally the plan had been for the 4 cylinder versions to be marketed as VWs and the flat-6 to use the Porsche brand. Things got complicated when VW got a new CEO and Porsche decided it wanted to sell both 4 and 6 cylinder versions in the US under their marque. The net result was that Porsche was forced to share tooling costs making their 914 considerably more expensive than originally planned. Thus the 6 cylinder version ended up costing almost as much as the cheapest 911 and sales were weak. The 914/6 was discontinued in 1972 after 3,351 had been made.
