After Switching Parties, Carlyle Plans to Switch Clans

Phoenix- It’s been a year since things were shaken up in the Arizona political realm. The Arizona Representative Carlyle Begay switched parties. He decided to announce that he is switching up his clans. This shook the cultural foundation of the Navajo Nation.

The young politician is To’tsohniin, born for Kinyaa’aanii, and Tl’iz lani. Navajos were once again shocked by his announcement via Facebook Live.

“I want to help the Todich’ii’nii build a bridge with those who need and want a chance with those who can provide that chance”. “I have two similar clans and I need to diversify my clan portfolio”. “This will help me connect with the Todich’ii’nii people”.

He looked stern in his decision but no one was beside him in the live feed. The video was less than a minute long but it felt like an eternity as the 34 year old politician announce his switch.

People wondered if it was possible to switch clans during one’s lifetime and what the implications would be in the future. No Navajo politicians have ever openly switched clans but some politicians were accused of changing their clans so they can enter romantic relationships but it was proven.

Many see this switch as a betrayal to the Tl’zi lani people. Begay left ¼ of him but the other became Todich’ii’nii. This has upset the people and we are unsure which side, paternal or maternal, he switched.

“I can’t believe he would just do that”. “He left us and he does not look to be turning back”. “We practically made him”.

Some people think this is a costly political move. They believe that it will alienate the Tl’zi lani people. They mainly exist in the Western Agency and some believe that he alienated half of the Navajo Nation. People will spread rumors of him leaving his people stranded without a shepherd.

He did not reach out to us for comment or questions but we wish him well on his new political direction.
