tell me, how often do you look up from what you are doing and out the window at the sky and wonder...what exactly are we doing here? what are we doing on a floating ball of rocks and h2o molecules, going in circles (ellipses!) around a ball of fire situated at the meeting point of nowhere ... and everywhere? these are questions for 4:30 in the morning (which just so happens to be when I am writing this). there are so many questions. but mainly: what is the meaning of us being here? thinking, breathing, dreaming dreams, existing? if you were to ask me personally, i'd say it is to love. and be loved. and really, to do what we have been doing (for the most part) - existing to do great things and to carry out good deeds. to make an impact on this earth while we're on it.
you might ask, 'what is the point of creating, doing, building up years of progress if one day it will all be gone, and you, gone with it. if one day there will be no one left to remember any of it - your deeds or the accomplishments of any other human being on earth'
well, I'd say yes, someday all of this glorious earth - mountain, plain, desert, ocean, city, country, vegetation, and people - will disappear. and by that, not perform a disappearing act or render itself invisible, but crumble into nothingness. and what a scary thought...
but. however frightening or disheartening that may seem, be comforted in the fact that that moment is thousands of years off. we as individuals and as a people have time yet. and when that time comes, every thing that has been done, every good deed carried out, every positive word spoken, every embrace given, every friendship fostered, will not have been for nought. it has all contributed to this world in some way. it all counts. i matter. you (yes, you) matter. who we are and what we do matter. we have the power and ability to contribute to our world in an extraordinary way. no matter your spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) i am sure that you would at least agree that doing something good on earth and for the earth does the mind, heart and soul good. it will have a positive, lasting effect. it doesn't matter that you might not be here to see just how positive or lasting your effect was. it will still have been felt.
i might not ever know the exact reason for our existence on this very earth. there could be a multitude of reasons. then factor in why we were placed in the exact time period we were, and it's a veritable mystery. so, i may not know the exact reason, but I do believe that we were put here to love. to experience the wild ride that is life. to touch the lives of others. to learn. and most of all, to leave this place better than we entered it.
this is your call. i may not know what your dreams and aspirations are or what keeps you up at night, but I do know that you care deeply or are passionate about something. i know that you have the power to affect the world and that we have the responsibility as citizens of the earth to effect change (for the better). this is our time. let's get out there and find out what's happening to our environment and the people in it. let's travel as far as halfway across the world and as close as next door to lend a helping hand and change lives. let's learn equally about the plight of the coral reefs and the poisoning of the flint, michigan water supply. get out there and meet people. learn what excites them and tell them what inspires you. think about what you can do for the environment. this is *your* home! this is *our* home.
there are so many factors that go into making the world a better place. don't be discouraged if you haven't figured it out by the day's end. (the pyramids were not built in one day) just know that you have power (and with that, great responsibility.) you have a voice. use it. keep speaking no matter how futile it may seem or how loud the negative voices may shout. it is incredibly important. and know, that if you ever find yourself staring outside the window and up into the interminable sky at four in the morning, you are not alone.

regarding consumerism, attitudes, and the earth
βThe world would be better off without humans. We are the scourge of the planet.β This is something we hear far too often. How have we made pessimism and apathy regarding the future of our planet the norm? In a world where our economic system relies on a structure of endless production and consumption, many see no end to humanityβs destructive means. Even though the majority of us acknowledge the crimes we commit against our planet, and agree that we must not continue in our path of devastation, an ultimately indifferent attitude prevails. We think, βwhat can I do about this? I am powerless; itβs the big businesses and politicians that are responsible for fixing this mess, they are the ones who are making it.β And so, unknowingly and unintentionally, we go out and buy our groceries from a giant supermarket chain, we buy clothes from fast fashion industries, we overuse electricity generated from coal plants, we hand our money to the very people who are responsible for destroying our environment, who will, in turn, produce more βgoodsβ at the expense of the planet. Itβs a vicious cycle. A key barrier to achieving harmony with our environment is the bane of selfishness. In wealthy countries, we are spoiled. We increasingly demand cheaper products, usually for no reason other than to save money, despite having plenty at our expense. Unfortunately, cheaper options have an invisible price tag of huge environmental damage and appalling working conditions. We go for the cheap product, because hey, itβs cheap!- ignoring the hidden price completely. We consume without thinking about the implications behind our consumption. To us, the cycle ends when we buy the product. Thatβs that. Of course, this is far from reality. But, who can blame us for blindly consuming when we donβt know what the implications are? As consumers, we need to know what we are buying. We should be able to know what our dollar is truly paying for- is it paying for unimaginable amounts of waste, for a CEOβs fifth holiday home, or for the fair treatment of workers and responsibly sourced materials? And another thing- in what world is it necessary to have stores churn out a new range of clothes every single week? Who needs to buy so many clothes? We produce so many clothes that when charities send their unsold garments to poorer communities, even they have no need for them because they already have too much. Twenty years ago, stores would have new ranges of clothing come in no more than four times a year to coincide with seasons. Why have we allowed such extreme materialism to become rampant? So, what can we, as everyday people, do about this? We may not have the type of hard power that corporates and politicians possess, but there are ways in which we can all contribute to a change. βVote with your lifestyleβ. You may have heard this phrase before, but what does it mean? Quite simply, it means that your decisions count, no matter how small. It means that by being conscious of your lifestyle choices, you are sending a message out, you are contributing to the demand, or lack thereof, of a product which you choose or decline to buy. Since our economic system is built on the laws of supply and demand, this has an impact. If you wonβt buy it, they wonβt sell it! You might think, βIβm only one person. I wonβt make an impact. To make an impact in this way, everybody needs to make the same decision as me, and letβs face it, nobody cares enough to do so.β Iβm sure youβve heard the saying, βIf you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.β This is incredibly relevant when it comes to making environmentally and ethically responsible choices-if we have an attitude of apathy when it comes to our everyday decisions, we are, unfortunately, causing harm and no help. If you buy it, they will sell it. We cannot permit such destruction of our planet to occur because of apathetic and pessimistic mindsets. We must be cautious of our decisions, of the attitudes that influence them. It is not enough to recognise that people are destroying the environment, we must follow up on our views by refusing to support atrocious practises, even if that means we must be a bit more informed and perhaps pay a little bit more for ethical products. At the most basic level, here are some easy things you can do to help: recycle EVERYTHING you can, avoid throwing unwanted things out-repurpose them or give them away, avoid buying things in large quantities when unnecessary, go for products without excessive packaging, and avoid buying what you donβt need, and research the brands you buy from. I do not believe that humans are the scourge of the earth. We have so many unique abilities, we do some truly lovely things, and we are more than capable of fixing up the chaos that has been made. We just have to overcome the greed and materialism which has landed us in todayβs mess. We must be more considerate, selfless and aware. We must not be pessimistic, for this will only lead us further down the path of destruction.
