Study/Homework Tips
1. Whilst studying, drink something caffeinated that is really cold. I recommend caffeinated water (yes that is real), coffee, or tea. The caffeine will help you stay awake and the temperature should also help with that.
2. If you are reading paragraphs, put some sort of snack on top of each paragraph (or only take one from the bag for each if you are on the computer). Make sure it is a snack that you like, such as Oreoâs, gummy bears/worms, Goldfish crackers, Cheez-its, etc. Eat the snack on top of the paragraph you have just finished reading only after you are done.
3. If you have to read a book, set goals! If it has to be read in a certain amount of days, I recommend dividing the pages among the days but keep it so you have one or two days to practice writing reports on it. Before turning each page, check and see if you can remember and understand everything that happened in those pages. If you see something you have questions about, inferences about, connections you have made, or if you just see quotes you think you could use in your reports, put a sticky note wherever you saw it with a note about what you saw.
4. Say you need to write a 5 page essayâŠyou probably know how big your average body paragraphs are, right? Weâll pretend that theyâre a half page each. Maybe your intro and conclusion are only a quarter page each. So 5 pages times 2 paragraphs each equals ten paragraphs, but we would turn that into 11 paragraphs since your intro and conclusion are only a half page together. Brainstorm your 9 big statements onto a piece of paper and write 3 supporting details with elaboration for each statement.
5. Back to essays, if you canât imagine a mic dropping at the end of your conclusion, itâs not strong enough.
6. If your ice cold caffeine isnât enough to keep you awake, try rubbing an ice cube under your eye and on your eyelid.
7. TAKE BREAKS! You probably know how much studying or homework you can handle before needing a break. I recommend taking a 10 minute break to take a walk, shower, get a snack, watch a short YouTube video, etc. every hour.
8. Come up with silly phrases to help you remember what you are learning. Maybe itâs a funny little song or jingle, or maybe itâs just a joke to remember something. Youâll probably remember these better than your usual boring notes.
9. Take notes with colorful pens! Then you can differentiate one note from a totally unrelated other note instead of having them all mesh together. Now you wonât think that Commodus helped Shakespeare defeat the Mongols.
10. Have music without words playing. Whatever helps you focus best works, whether that is funky techno or classical piano, as long as it works for you.
11. Have some sort of healthy snack and a bottle of water nearby. This will prevent you from having to get up when you get hungry and you wonât be sitting there devouring a whole bag of chips.
12. For every A you get on your Quarter/Trimester/Semester report card, treat yourself. Maybe let yourself have a cookie for each one or buy a candy bar or some gum for each one.
I wish you the best of luck and hope this helps!
