“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Download a hi-res version at http://blog.worldofemotions.com/danilka/flags/all-flags-of-the-world/ I am tempted daily to post or publicly comment about foreign politics, but I consider it a personal responsibility to hold my tongue (or fingers in the case of social media) because 1) I am barely well versed enough in the country’s/countries’ politics, 2) I am not trained …
Recently rewatched Dark City (1998) which starred Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Richard O'Brien and the late Ian Richardson. I didn't appreciate it when I saw it in the cinema back then in 1998. I think I was expecting another sci-fi flick of The Matrix, and was greeted instead with a noir-like sci-fi wannabe. I didn't like the ending back, thinking that it was all one big joke. But I appreciate the film now that I have seen it again. I like how it is only one seemingly unreliable person who is actually thinking clearly while everyone else are the ones who are lost. Only when even the hardest character in the film logically challenges the pariah's point of view, and took an honest look at it, did he only accept the very difficult and ridiculous reality. The film was brave to not succumb to the usual happy ending. You can't say that the ending was hopeless, but you really can't say that it was hopeful either. Okay, I shall not risk spoiling it for you if you intend to watch it for the first time some day. Here is a good review that I came across and it was written only recently. It explains a lot more about what I also felt about the film: http://lwlies.com/articles/the-surreal-stylistic-brilliance-of-dark-city/
On history: “Ignorance of history can get you into trouble and the knowledge of history can empower you.”
On literature: “Through Literature, I acquired a love of books and the joy of reading. Reading is an educational, joyful and liberating experience. You are transported from your circumstances, no matter how difficult and challenging, to another world, another time and another civilisation.”

Hey there. I just want to pour whats in my head lately. Idk whats happening but i feel like i dont do well in med school anymore. (i used to get straight A's, but these day its just kinda hard). I dont feel good about this mentally and i am tired seeing my friends's faces everyday thinking they would judge me based on my performance. And this whole thing keep draining me :/ i just want dissapear.
I saw this message on @studylustre‘s page too and I want to reiterate: if you can, please talk to your personal tutor or someone in your department that you trust. It sounds like you could use a break from studying, and they might be able to help you set up the process of deferring.
I understand your anxiety but I am sure your friends won’t judge you for looking after your mental health. You need to put yourself first but it starts with telling someone, not someone on the internet but someone who you trust, like your parents, your personal tutor, the university counsellor. If you are really struggling please call or text Nightline, the student listening service.
The structures of earthly empires often are very impressive. They give the sense that they and what they represent will last forever. Visiting the great ruins of civilizations from Babylon to the Aztecs, one imagines the people must have assumed that their glory would endure forever. Humanity tends to suffer from delusions of immortality.

The Roman Forum was definitely the best part of our whole trip – we spent hours just walking through the ancient ruins in silence. It is almost incomprehensible to me that all of this is still here.
I felt the same way too when I was there.
I'm awake.

Passing train
"But on a serious note, my friend. What have you done so far in taking yourself closer to that life you have always been dreaming about?"
I watch the train's last carriage roll by. I am able to see the faces of the commuters, eyes on their mobile devices, some talking with one another. Indeed we are passengers on the moving carriages of life. We might be doing useful things, we might be not. For some of us, we might even be on the wrong train.
The old gentleman does not look at me. His eyes are also on the passing train. A smile spreads on his lips while he awaits my answer. Then he gently nods, as he obviously receives what I mean to say.
Oh those chains that bind
That I cannot break
But I can slowly unloose them
When no one is watching

In the end, you end up accepting everything in your life – suffering, horror, love, loss, hate – all of it. It’s all a movie anyway.

They fired me as CEO because I was so bad. A few months later they kicked me off the board of directors. I lost a ton of money and all my friends. I wish I had just done nothing. I wish I had read books. I wish I had written that novel. I wish I …
